cjbgkagh··on Hair Loss Was Just the Start. Ozempic Users Are Also Reporting Nail Trouble
Not only that but the weight loss is often a side effect of fixing other issues, for me I’ve been taking a low dose for autoimmune related ME/CFS for about 4 years now.
cjbgkagh··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
I’m going to stick with my pointless designation, sure many things can yield knowledge and if money, time, and expertise were infinite then sure, why not. But they are finite and there a million better things for these people to be doing that would yield useful knowledge more efficiency.

Engineering exists within an ecosystem and that old ecosystem is gone. Everything would be a once off. The materials science could be interesting but that’ll also be one offs and probably wouldn’t generalize.

cjbgkagh··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
As a consumer of black market peptides (formerly gray, thanks RFK) there doesn’t seem much of an attempt to hide it nor does it appear that anyone is intercepting them. The only package I lost was due to the LA Railroad heists.
cjbgkagh··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
They usually have someone on the inside they can contact to remove negative reviews, eBay doesn’t care because the high positive ratings means more sales which means more commissions.
cjbgkagh··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
I’m with the old guy on this, too long since it last flew.

It makes no sense to me, it would be an expensive and pointless vanity project. Sounds like there is a chain of people too afraid to say no, perhaps they’re hoping to drag their heels until priorities change again.

cjbgkagh··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
Most people are trend followers and what trends they see decides what trends they follow. It sounds like the algorithms that chose which influencers to promote made the decision, which was already somewhat true before the current AI trend. This happened when there was a big push from deterministic feeds to algorithmically ranked feeds by facebook and twitter. I guess an argument could be made that the people who chose what content to consume feed the algorithm but really there is a heavy hand on the scales that tilts the algorithm in favor of various things.
cjbgkagh··on Writing Efficient C++ Code
I rarely use C++ but when I do it is for speed. It’s not uncommon that carefully crafted intrinsics can 10x the straightforward naive implementation.
cjbgkagh··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
Not a regular C++ programmer but wouldn’t you use std::span here instead? Sure it’ll carry a few redundant lengths but it makes using functions that take spans easier. When I do write C++ it’s usually for speed so I’m often working at the intrinsics level, though AI has gotten good enough at it that I now generally delegate this work to an agent.
cjbgkagh··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Well I have news for you… governments are coming for unrealized gains, they will not care if the money is on hand, they’ll fire sell your property if you don’t get a loan to pay the taxes. It’s a mathematical inevitability. And by that I mean governments are going broke and will try to find ever more creative ways to raise money, and unrealized gains, tax normalization, is one of the bigger leavers.
cjbgkagh··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
1.53 × 10¹⁵ molecules per 1mcg. Which is 15 orders of magnitude larger than a single molecule. If 2mg of fentanyl is considered potentially lethal that would place carfentanyl at 20mcg, though I’ve heard conflicting reports on potency with some placing it at 10x not 100x. So roughly 16-17 orders of magnitudes.

I don’t take fentanyl but I regularly take signaling peptides where the doses are typically in the mcg range and still rather potent - though with signaling peptides the response curve typically flattens out so bigger doses don’t necessarily mean stronger effects - they can be saturated. Depends on what you’re signaling though.

I had correctly predicted my hypersensitivity to semaglutide (ozempic) so started using it for treating autoimmune issues at a dose of 25mcg and I still ended up with temporary gastroparesis.

cjbgkagh··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
You may have missed my sarcasm.

There is a very strong link with higher prices for copper with more wire theft, as anyone would expect. You pay more for it you get more of it.

There is a strong link between lower fentanyl prices leading to increased usage and overdosing. Areas with cheaper fentanyl experience more crime not less, any decrease in individual criminality is more than offset by an increase in the percentage of users. You know we live in a world where this data is already available.

cjbgkagh··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Perhaps we should pay them more instead?
cjbgkagh··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
The US has a substantially greater crime rate than South Korea.
cjbgkagh··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
I wouldn't know
cjbgkagh··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
Yes ‘pivot’ somehow a double typo or perhaps some weird autocorrection. Sorry about that.
cjbgkagh··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
Well the privet to luxury was due to quartz watches taking their core business, and now Chinese superclones are in the early days of threatening their luxury business. At a certain point it’s hard to care about the residual difference.
cjbgkagh··on 'Idiocracy' Predicted All of This
Mike Judge was inspired to make Idiocracy from a trip to Disneyland, having since been I can see the resemblance.
cjbgkagh··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Probably be easier and more reliable to use star navigation with modern cameras, computers and atomic clocks. Especially for commercial aircraft flying above the weather.
cjbgkagh··on Show HN: LuaCAD – Parametric CAD Scripted in Lua
AFAIK OpenSCAD does not do any meaningful optimizations that are enabled by having a limited DSL, despite that normally being a good reason to do a DSL. And ironically you often have use a general purpose language (python and C++) to do custom optimizations not possible in the DSL.
cjbgkagh··on $580M undersea cable rerouted to avoid the grave of Dobby the House Elf
The miners were doing mining surveys for internal use only, the environmentalist were submitting the cultural / environmental surveys as complaints which they’re allowed to do as part of the law the local government made for itself since it was government land that was being leased. It was more of a public consultation process, if no one complained then that’s fine too. The miners already have strict environmental regulations they have to follow regardless of where they build. Having seen these submissions it’s often stuff like, there is a river and since rivers are where people tend to congregate if we were to look we might find some ancient stone age human artifact despite no such thing ever being found within 100s of kms. Also rivers move, especially small ones.
cjbgkagh··on $580M undersea cable rerouted to avoid the grave of Dobby the House Elf
The ecological studies also cover the surrounding areas. They can’t say that absolutely everything is significant so to make the stronger case they pile the significance into the area they think is the likely site to be developed. Then the miners are ‘responding’ to the feedback by relocating to a less significant location that already has been ecologically studied and deemed insignificant.
cjbgkagh··on $580M undersea cable rerouted to avoid the grave of Dobby the House Elf
A common trick in mining is to send surveyors to an area they don’t want so the various interests just so happen to decide that the area being surveyed is the one with historical / ecological significance. After that has been established they send surveyors for the area they do want.
cjbgkagh··on Study links GLP-1 drugs to bigger jump in women's employment than a degree
Not exclusively genetic but inclusively genetic. There are of course other factors involved and I think genes are a big one.
cjbgkagh··on Study links GLP-1 drugs to bigger jump in women's employment than a degree
Causality is an issue there, I would suggest that genetic auto immune issues that are rather wide spread can cause all of the above. I think people are finding that GLP-1s help with auto immune issues.
cjbgkagh··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
Like almost every psychoactive drug it really depends on the individual. I have ME/CFS from a strong genetic propensity to dysautonomia. I think that my ME/CFS is an autoimmune reaction to the dysautonomia where, counter intuitively, medications like melatonin and amitriptyline, by helping with dysautonomia, actually substantially increase energy levels and mental cognition during the day. My case is a bit extreme at ~1/20K but I think ~1/50 of the general population have a similar but much milder reaction. At N=120 a study like this would not be able to detect that. These ~1/50 people are more likely to have the sort of sleep issues / burnout that makes them more likely to reach for melatonin in the first place. So the more interesting study would be conditioned by the subset of the general population that have already decided they need melatonin.
cjbgkagh··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
I would assume that the task of being a taxi driver would act as a near constant test for Alzheimer’s, would be interesting to do GWAS studies on older taxi drivers and compare against taxi drivers who quit earlier in their careers.
cjbgkagh··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
I was unsuccessful because I wouldn’t pay the bribes, I had a number of independent local advisors give pretty consistent accounts to how things work there.

I wouldn’t be so worried about the corruption of my society if I thought there was something implicit that meant we wouldn’t be corrupted in the same way that others are.

Nor do I blame the Cambodians for their predicament. You’re tilting at windmills.

cjbgkagh··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
No, I don’t think I will
cjbgkagh··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
I am suggesting that it's more than the elites, then you'd have to take into account the people who would act in a corrupt way if presented with the opportunity. As someone who has tried and failed to sell software into Cambodia I know from experience that the corruption there is very thorough and continues well on down to the lower strata of society.
cjbgkagh··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
By endemic I mean to its core, it’s the difference of having everyone being corrupt versus just the elites / political class being corrupt. If anyone thinks that the problem of corrupt elites could be improved by extending that corruption to everyone then I’m not sure what would convince them otherwise.
