cjaybo··on I canceled my book deal
Does this type of ray tracing book exist? It’s something never learned about and would love to know what courses or books others have found valuable
cjaybo··on 10 Years of Let's Encrypt
“They sent a few emails soliciting donations” isn’t exactly a horror story in my experience. Seems hardly worth mentioning!
cjaybo··on Washington Post editorials omit a key disclosure: Bezos' financial ties
Everyone thinks they have “a bias towards reality”. I have yet to see this actually be true!

Everyone has biases, whether conscious or unconscious, and trying to claim otherwise is a massive red flag on its own IMO.

cjaybo··on Switching Pip to Uv in a Dockerized Flask / Django App
Better performance than C? This is news to me
cjaybo··on Ask HN: Anyone struggling to get value out of coding LLMs?
Are these “millions of people” in the room with us now?
cjaybo··on Show HN: I used OpenAI's new image API for a personalized coloring book service
Jesus Christ
cjaybo··on People say they’ll pay more for “made in the USA” so we ran a test
Yeah isn’t this like the number one lesson for startups? People will say lots of things when there’s no money or reputations on the line.
cjaybo··on Free Course on Security Headers, for Developers
Yeah 17 lessons combining for 1 hour of content kinda makes this seem like more of an email collector than an in depth course.
cjaybo··on The Leader of the LeetCode Rebellion: An Interview with Roy Lee
This guy must have some strong connections to get this sort of coverage out of an AI wrapper + a few gimmicky twitter posts
cjaybo··on The Alexa feature "do not send voice recordings" you enabled no longer available
The primary cost in this case is raw storage and bandwidth. What is AI doing to reduce that cost? Also what source confirms that “processing audio” is 5x cheaper because of AI? Seems like a dubious claim.
cjaybo··on Teen on Musk's DOGE team graduated from 'The Com'
That’s a different thing than building “impressive tech” imo. And a far cry from what would qualify someone as one of society’s “future titans”.
cjaybo··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
I think a small airport/airfield in one of the most expensive areas of the country is a bit of an exceptional case. In most places ATC employees make pretty competitive/comfortable wages, so I’m not sure this is the only factor.
cjaybo··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
I also live here but that doesn’t give me crystal ball-like insight into what every single fed and fed-adjacent employee is feeling. It’s a fairly big city! Do you work in the federal space? I have acquaintances who do and their mood doesn’t quite match the hysteria you see on e.g. the regional subreddits.
cjaybo··on Crunch – a Scheme compiler with a minimal runtime
Many have been created, but how many have significant usage?
cjaybo··on Mind-Bending Soviet Era Oil Rig City on the Caspian Sea
I mean, given how much undeveloped area exists inland, probably a very very long time?
cjaybo··on macOS Sequoia Preview
If you get the paid version then customization is an option, just FYI. Not sure when this was introduced but it’s been working well for me.
cjaybo··on Show HN: I've built a macOS app for developers to clean their dev machines
How much time is this saving you? I’m not seeing how this is worth a recurring subscription cost. Does this do more than simple bash script would?
cjaybo··on Popover API
Saw an interesting case of this type of attack in the CounterStrike community earlier this week.

Someone setup a fake tournament website that asked the user to login with their Steam account. Then it launched what looked like a new browser window with the Steam login page, but was actually just a popover that had been elaborately styled, with window decorations and all.

cjaybo··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
> They’ve made some claims that are downright lies

Which claims are you referring to?

cjaybo··on Live NASA telescope feed for today's solar eclipse [video]
Small?! Actually, despite how small it looks from here on Earth, the sun is very large!
cjaybo··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
It quite literally was, hence you losing your money and SBF serving time in prison.
cjaybo··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
What makes you think they are joking?
cjaybo··on Beyond A*: Better Planning with Transformers
That’s one expensive imagemagick command!
cjaybo··on Systemd by Example (2021)
I’d argue that the degree of portability implied by the term is very much context dependent. “Portable between Linux systems” is a perfectly valid use of the term, imo.

Do you take portable to mean a program that can run on every processor arch and OS available?

cjaybo··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
> Not at all

The arrogance required to tell someone that their experience is false is something I have trouble wrapping my head around.

cjaybo··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
We could guess or we could refer to history to here. Maybe you would rather be doomed to repeat it?
cjaybo··on The Final Speech from The Great Dictator (1940)
These aren’t mutually exclusive though. The tech industry can over-index on data driven decision making while also being reasonable about accepting failures.
cjaybo··on Amazon Has an Honesty Issue
You posted the same theory above, except there you included the important disclaimer that you have no inside information — is this just a hunch that you have? Because it seems like a Hanlon’s razor type of situation to me. Without some sort of evidence of the fraud you speak of, it seems far more likely to be them simply struggling with challenges of scale. Every business deals with bad employees but the majority of people with jobs tend to want to keep their job. It’s hard for me to imagine that fraud is the dominating cause here.
cjaybo··on Goodbye, clean code (2020)
What the GP explained is commonly true when it comes to interacting with other humans, with only a few exceptions. You can complain about human nature being counter productive all you want, but refusing to adapt to this reality and foregoing fundamental soft skills is, ironically, even more counter productive.
cjaybo··on 23andMe confirms hackers stole ancestry data on 6.9M users
It’s the ideological form of “when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”
