citizenkeen··on Cows Destroyed an Entire Marine Ecosystem in California
Nobody thinks blaming cows means blaming their existence. Everybody understands it means "cow agriculture". You're coming across as intentionally argumentative and willfully obtuse.
citizenkeen··on Show HN: I made an early 2000s-inspired internet forum
With all the people wishing for forums but not wanting to host, I'm surprised nobody had made a Discord-for-forums. Threaded, not reddit.
citizenkeen··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
Internal doesn't make it cool. It's not about testing, it's about developing familiarity.
citizenkeen··on David Guetta uses ChatGPT and uberduck.ai to deepfake Eminem rap for DJ set
As Guetta notes on Twitter, he's not releasing this commercially.

Both hip hop and EDM have a huge culture of sampling live things they couldn't sample and release on an album.

Eminem has rapped over songs he doesn't own at concerts.

citizenkeen··on My grandmother died at home, just as she wanted. It cost $145,000
My parents stayed in Mexico after their Medicare and SS kicked in.

Once you've been down there for 5-10 years, why would you come back? There are huge communities of retired expats in Mexico. We're talking 5-10k expats all visiting the same grocery stores, churches, etc.

My parent's best friends down there grew up in the same era they did, often in the same regions of the US. I don't know what my parents would come back to the US for?

citizenkeen··on Story Structure 101: Super Basic Shit
One other note is that the story circle doesn't necessarily map to a text. A movie may have three circles (two consecutive ones for the A plot, one for the B plot). A book may have six. A fantasy epic might have twenty iterations of the circle in each volume.
citizenkeen··on Story Structure 101: Super Basic Shit
The circle is cyclic. Game of Thrones follows the story circle, but each book is made of about twenty circles.

Don't confuse a story for the text.

citizenkeen··on Story Structure 101: Super Basic Shit
Sounds like you don't need a website with a 101 label, then.
citizenkeen··on Sh1mmer – An exploit capable of unenrolling enterprise-managed Chromebooks
Writing notes by hand has been proven to increase understanding and retention. Unless we’re giving kids OCR tablets, they’re learning less taking notes on a keyboard.
citizenkeen··on Broider: Pixel Art CSS Borders
Hold landscape.
citizenkeen··on VALL-E: Microsoft’s new zero-shot text-to-speech model
Not the person you’re responding to, but I don’t think it’s egotist at all. I’m sure I’ll fall for some news manipulation. I’m sure I already have.

I don’t think it’s elitist to think many people will be duped. I think it’s arrogant to think you won’t.

citizenkeen··on The skilled trades haven't caught as a career choice with Gen Z
I remember seeing something in the late 90s / early 2000s (when I was in college) that broke down the incomes of liberal arts majors who went to law school and those who didn't. It should have convinced me to switch to STEM, but all it did was convince me to go to law school.
citizenkeen··on AI: Markets for Lemons, and the Great Logging Off
What is this? My Google-fu is weak.
citizenkeen··on Sherlock Holmes will finally escape copyright this weekend
Wow. No.

Spider-Man is owned by Marvel, which is owned by Disney.

Sony has an exclusive license to the film rights which they will eventually lose and cede back to Disney.

citizenkeen··on Show HN: Write 500 Words a Day
Do you have a roadmap? Or a ko.fi?

I'd love to be able to support this. I'd also love to be able to export my text.

citizenkeen··on Show HN: Write 500 Words a Day
Related, I've found stopping episodes of television in the middle makes it much easier to stop bingeing. If I finish an episode there's always* a revelation that I want to go on to the next episode to resolve. But in the nadir of the middle I'm usually more satisfied and I can just turn it off.
citizenkeen··on Atom was archived today
They may be making it out of love, but they’re not the ones giving it away. The ones who are giving it away are not doing it out of love.
citizenkeen··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
What has Twitter done about child exploitation in the last two months other than disband the groups responsible for stopping it?

I can find any reputable news sources saying positive things about Twitter and child exploration.

citizenkeen··on The Feelings Monster: building a character with all the feels
Agreed, we should model our educational frameworks on the way they did it in the 50s, when men were men and women knew their place.

We’ve learned nothing new about childhood development in the last 70 years, pretending otherwise is a waste of senior designer time.

citizenkeen··on AI Art Panic
I can’t tell if someone is selling me something made locally, or is just pawning something made in China as local, but I still try to support local because I believe the underlying knock on effects are greater.

The same holds for AI art.

citizenkeen··on The Fediverse is inefficient but that's a good trade-off
No, but they weren’t the first ones on Twitter, either.
citizenkeen··on Cook shortage threatens to sink U.S. Coast Guard operations
Anytime someone uses the phrase "labor shortage", remind them that what they have is a "salary shortage".
citizenkeen··on GitHub Copilot investigation
It’s not making money off of open source, it’s making money off of hosting open source.
citizenkeen··on Build your fanbase using the K-pop method
And yet the post also suggests members of the company should talk as individuals, not as the company. Which is… a tough row to hoe.
citizenkeen··on UK pensions hit with margin calls as gilts and sterling slide
This is a lot of the UK’s first time in a D/s relationship, and it’s going to hurt.
citizenkeen··on Google is shutting down Stadia

citizenkeen··on On Mr. Beast and being alone in a circle for 100 days
The argument is that money is coercive.
citizenkeen··on On Mr. Beast and being alone in a circle for 100 days
Fox had a reality shoe where they just tortured people for money.

citizenkeen··on Cognitive ability is related to supporting freedom of speech (2020)
That is perfectly in line with freedom of speech. Is the government showing up and arresting the speakers? No? Then freedom of speech is intact.
citizenkeen··on San Francisco braces for commercial real estate crash
Instructions confusing. Just rented AirBnB in Idaho.
