circusfly··on As Use of A.I. Soars, So Does the Energy and Water It Requires
AI use is soaring? Where is it soaring? I've found going back to StackOverflow, Google and my brain works best.
circusfly··on Fedora Workstation 41 to No Longer Install Gnome X.org Session by Default
> Given all of the known issues with "modern sleep" in modern laptops

I don't use sleep or hibernate, not even on work Windows laptops, there's always some ensuing flakiness that occurs. My machines are either running or shutdown.

circusfly··on Fedora Workstation 41 to No Longer Install Gnome X.org Session by Default
I use it all the time, from within the web browser, both Edge and Chrome, Teams works great, including screen sharing, on X. I haven't tried Wayland to compare. I'm on Kubuntu.
circusfly··on Public trust in AI is sinking across the board
"Couple years ago everything was built on a blockchain"

I've never worked anywhere where blockchain was used.

"years before everything was going microservices"

The vast majority of software architecture has gone microservices.

"earlier everything was moving to the cloud"

I've worked many places where the cloud was used but never 100%.

You are right, blockchain was a fad, everything else you cited are valid and remain.

circusfly··on Radicle: Open-Source, Peer-to-Peer, GitHub Alternative
1. Lower left, device isn't connected? What device?

2. Domain ends with the nonsensical .xyz, my email server would block all email traffic from them.

3. The default dark theme isn't readable by about 40% of the human population. It can be changed to a light theme, that's nice, but the light theme is some sort of puke light purple.

4. "Run the following command and follow the instructions to install Radicle and get started." I have to use your custom tool called "rad"?

No thanks. Even though GitHub is owned by Microsoft, I'd rather use it.

circusfly··on Weather.gov 2.0
Wheels remain an interesting choice in 2024 as well.
circusfly··on Weather.gov 2.0
Too scientificy for my, I prefer https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.7771&lon=-1...
circusfly··on Weather.gov 2.0
I'm a fan, miss DarkSky though but weather.gov is far and above better than any commercialized weather site IMO.
circusfly··on Weather.gov 2.0
You're doing great! radar.weather.gov is a terrific site, works on all devices, works extremely well and with zero Ads, please keep up the great work!
circusfly··on Weather.gov 2.0
I don't get these criticisms, radar.weather.gov is phenomenally great! It works on all devices and doesn't show Ads. Maybe all these negative comments are people who work at accuweather or other for money weather sites trying to disparage radar.weather.gov with fabricated nonsensical garbage.
circusfly··on Weather.gov 2.0
I don't understand, I love radar.weather.gov. It's fast, works extremely well, lets me zoom in on an area even as it's animating, works great on Windows, Linux, Chrome on Android, what's not to like?
circusfly··on Testcontainers
No thanks, I will continue to roll my own to control it full, at home and at work.
circusfly··on Testcontainers
Agreed, this is the best way, testcontainers are over hyped.
circusfly··on A modest update to Qubes OS
Gnome is terrible. I will choose either KDE or XFCE any day.
circusfly··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
It's OK, the new validation method is AI driven, we're good.
circusfly··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
Volvo probably is an exception in the car world.
circusfly··on Plastic is taking over farms
"It’s not uncommon for manufacturers of computers or tires to ask consumers to pay an extra fee at the time of purchase for the cost of collecting and recycling the product."

The quote is stating that expenses are passed to the consumer, how is that good? It's also talking about things like tires, I think we can all agree the world wouldn't function without tires unless we're all willing to go back to the horse and buggy?

circusfly··on Gemma: New Open Models
Gemma, Mistral, I feel like Rip van Winkle, asleep for 20 years only to wake up and find the whole tech world changed.
circusfly··on Big media publishers are inundating the web with subpar product recommendations
"I wouldn't want to be in the situation where my revenue could dramatically go up and down purely because Some Company X making some kind of routine algorithm change. I wouldn't be able to sleep. "

If we compare to a small business on a highway and a company decides to move the highway so far away from them as to diminish their customer base effectively driving them out of business; this can't happen, since roads are governed as public resources. This is what the Internet needs.

circusfly··on I Fucking Hate Jira (2022)
No system is perfect for sure. It's a rule of thumb. If it doesn't fit then stick with the really large story that simply cannot be broken down into manageable chunks but it should be a super rare corner case that some piece of work is so huge yet atomically consistent that there is absolutely no human way to break it down, at all, in any way shape or form.
circusfly··on I Fucking Hate Jira (2022)
Agreed, doesn't seem like mods should even allow the link to be posted on a respectable site like HN.
circusfly··on I Fucking Hate Jira (2022)
At some places, any story higher than 5 gets split, an Epic is created and the 2 (or more) new stories are added to the new epic. I really don't get the online disdain for JIRA unless it's Microsoft employee astroturfers, almost as bad as Jetbrains and Red Hat astroturfers.
circusfly··on I Fucking Hate Jira (2022)
I much prefer Confluence to something like myriad Word and Excel sheets of uncanny versions floating around mostly unknown Sharepoint locations.
circusfly··on I Fucking Hate Jira (2022)
I guess I'm unique, I like JIRA.
