ciex··on The new rules of context engineering for Claude 5 generation models
It sounds like you are saying that this is reasonable in any kind of way, it's not. This is like Gmail deleting non-spam email after 30 days to prevent your inbox from filling up.
ciex··on Migrating from DigitalOcean to Hetzner
Do they always do this? I never had to present my passport as far as i can remember.
ciex··on Push events into a running session with channels
Telegram had always impressed me for the same reasons. They have constantly gotten worse since about 2022/2023 though. Dark patterns, pay gate, they lost chat history for some of my closest contacts including 15k+ lost photos, no support at all. Something changed in their product direction and I started moving all my chats to Signal.
ciex··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
Cost of a car is extremely hard to predict, not just because of unexpected repairs but also because the price of gas is literally political.

The train experience in Germany is as bad as it is because of lobbying by the car industry and corruption both in the government and train operators. Not enough investment over decades paired with the absurd idea that train fares need to cover operating costs. Nobody would ask this of road networks, it’s just infrastructure that a society pays for. In addition to that the Deutsche Bahn suffers from common inefficiencies of large corporations that are not mitigated in effective ways by its leadership.

ciex··on Why, as a responsible adult, SimCity 2000 hits differently
Fantastic comment, thank you! I am going to dive into several of those sources and ideas.
ciex··on Apple's AirPods Pro hearing health features
Maybe not as extreme but I also always took great care of my hearing, wearing protection whenever I went out dancing when I was younger and never turning up my music to be nice and loud like my friends did in high school. Now in my mid 30s I have stress-induced tinnitus. Oh well.
ciex··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
Yes, please dont post about any unpromoted venues on hacker news!
ciex··on Show HN: Aldi Price Map
I don’t see anything indicating criticism in op’s comment, seems more like an expression of surprise.
ciex··on Sentry new TOS to use data to train AI with no opt-out
They have this as an experimental feature (which is opt-in and I won't try it)
ciex··on Terminal Smooth Scrolling
The article mentions `.vimrc`, which matches the format of the lines starting with `set ...` but that does not result in smooth scrolling for me.
ciex··on Gemini AI
Funny enough, OpenAI to this day violates EU requirements on price advertisement by charging VAT on top of the advertised price. They still owe me and every other customer in the EU ca. $3 VAT for every month I've had the ChatGPT subscription.
ciex··on WASM: Big deal or little deal?
If you don't care about transparency your web app will not be transparent today. It takes effort. Same can be said for Wasm-based projects.
ciex··on A good measurement culture where numbers don’t replace common sense
I would be interested in everyone's opinion on that 1 to 10 ratio ballpark number. What has your experience been like?
ciex··on A fridge from 70 years ago has better features than the fridge I own now
My fridge has pull-out shelves. They are very nice the 2x per year I use them.
ciex··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
I recently tried using Sony's (frustrating) Imaging Edge app to transfer photos from a camera to an iPad and gave it limited access and it refused to transfer images! When I changed the permissions to full access it worked. So there must be some difference, maybe not an obvious one.
ciex··on YouTube: Sort by oldest is back baby
Look at TikTok for how it can be done. It's not perfect but it's used very widely and ties context together across videos.
ciex··on Tell HN: My Reddit account was banned after adding my subs to the protest
This is how Reddit started. In the very beginning of the site the founders had a couple of accounts they would use to put content on the site. It's in Reddit's DNA so to speak.
ciex··on Tell HN: My Reddit account was banned after adding my subs to the protest
Legally, yes. Morally, no, they can't do what they want. Users have invested time and effort over literally decades to build today's Reddit communities. Therefore, Reddit needs to give good reasons for substantial changes they make if those could be harmful to community health.
ciex··on Tell HN: My Reddit account was banned after adding my subs to the protest
Mastodon's account migration implementation has some serious issues. AFAIK you can't migrate without access to the original account, so if that instance shuts down you're out of luck. I think it's also not possible to move past posts to a different instance so if your original one gets in bad hands you cannot get your content off of that.
ciex··on Tell HN: My Reddit account was banned after adding my subs to the protest
For now, the modcoord subreddit functionally takes on the role of a union. I know that there have been times in the past when moderators were unhappy about the state of tools that Reddit provides for them to moderate. If I remember correctly there was also some kind of spontaneous organisation of moderators that adressed Reddit admins with their collective voice, although I am not sure if any "strike" kind of action was threatened back then.
ciex··on Show HN: I made an iOS HN app to navigate large threads without getting lost
Email has terrible thread navigation and I consider old.reddit.com with reddit enhancement suite the best in class.
ciex··on Meta preps new social app
Public networks are a lot more hostile than we realize while we have moderation armies at work. That may not be a sustainable model. I think the way forward is building the right tools to help communities self-manage. It will be more like Discord and less like Twitter.
ciex··on Tell HN: We should start to add “ai.txt” as we do for “robots.txt”
If any kind of common URL is established, it should not be served from root but a location like `/.well-known/{ai,robots,meta,whatever}.txt` in order not to clobber the root namespace.
ciex··on The AT protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit
There's only so many few letter combinations and we should reuse them.
ciex··on EU sends Apple stark warning over USB-C charging on new iPhones
You build what you want but when billions of people use a technology our governments should most definitely get involved. With scale comes responsibility.
ciex··on ChatGPT has no inner monologue or meta-cognition
Oh yes, but again, that’s actually very similar between how humans and llms think. Both can use notes to improve coherence and increase the complexity that can be handled in a thought process but there is no strong guarantee that these notes are internally consistent.
ciex··on ChatGPT has no inner monologue or meta-cognition
Which is the same as what humans do? How would you tell anybody what you are „actually“ thinking? People are not very good at understanding their own motivations, thought processes, ulterior motives and on top of that we routinely fabricate or alter our own memories. We compensate for that by building social systems to collectively error collect, plan and model the world. That’s what AI will probably end up doing as well.
ciex··on Show HN: Pole Clock, a single 24h clock with multiple timezones
Can anyone recommend a book that discusses in depth all the peculiarities of timekeeping, time zones, historical efforts for measuring time, etc.? I would love to read something like that and I feel that there are many stories to be told.
ciex··on Google has most of my email because it has all of yours (2014)
I see you are getting a lot of negative comments so wanted to let you know I agree this is a good thing. Creating chaos is the only way to take away power from digital bureaucracy and surveillance systems. Make multiple conflicting linkedin profiles in your name, share a WhatsApp account with friends, delete and recreate your Instagram profile every year.
ciex··on Call for Participation to Chaos Computer Club’s 37C3
It’s a good chance to use your Bildungsurlaub allowance (education vacation?) where for 5 days a year you are being paid by your employer for educating yourself in a way of your choosing. C3 is recognized for that program almost everywhere in Germany.
