ciclotrone··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
Last year I had appendicitis in Italy, where I live. I called a cab to reach the nearest hospital, since I didn't feel so bad as warranting an ambulance. I got accepted, visited, transferred to the larger nearby hospital by ambulance, appendectomy, 4 nights stay, and I was provided with the drugs for the convalescence. When I was dismissed I took another cab back.

Total expense: ~25€ for the two taxi rides.

Very happy to pay my taxes, and very happy that when I don't need it myself, they go into financing the healthcare services for others that may or may not be able to pay out of pocket.

You can access via SSH either with password or with keys.

Our reference cluster has long queuing times during busy hours and requires 2FA for access, so we had extra incentives to have a self-contained solution to run on our development machines.

I find it quite disturbing that high taxation is seen as a negative aspect of Europe. I lived in Italy, France and Germany, and I enjoyed public healthcare and education of very high standard at very affordable prices, and free in the limit that one cannot afford to pay for them.

As a relative of a person with a chronic disease I can tell you that on the one hand if we are not bankrupt it is because of public healthcare, and on the other I'm proud of contributing through my taxes so that anybody in need can have the same treatment irrespective of their economic situation.

‘The most likely explanation’ At least three Russian journalists and activists appear to have been poisoned abroad since fall 2022.
ciclotrone··on A frog levitating in a strong magnetic field (1997) [video]
A fun fact is that, if memory doesn't fool me, the levitating frog experiment was carried out by Micheal Berry and Andre Geim, and they were awarded the ignobel for it.

Berry is the same one of the Berry phase for which he received a ton of non-humorous awards, and Geim went on to discover graphene and receive a Nobel without the ig in front.

> “The Russian company that was making the light-sensitive paper stopped manufacturing it and it’s run out,” said Azariah, who has now managed to import light-sensitive strips from Czechoslovakia.

Ok the vintage feeling of the article, but Czechoslovakia split 30 years ago.
