chunkyguy··on What the Hell Was Going on with Cigarette Ads in the 70s? (2024)
Like last year at a cafe in a small town somewhere in Greece.

You make it sound like indoor smoking in public places is a thing of a past.

chunkyguy··on macOS 26 adoption rate lower than prior macOS versions
I'm not upgrading to Tahoe my personal macbook because of the audio crackling issue that I have on my work macbook

chunkyguy··on Slop is not necessarily the future
> You treat your code as a means to an end to make a product for a user.

This sounds more like a product owner not a developer

chunkyguy··on Create value for others and don’t worry about the returns
You need to understand the context. The quote in Gita was to motivate the best warrior of the time at the battlefront facing opponents who were mainly his cousins and uncles.

In that context the quote is about performing the duties you were born to do without overthinking the consequences.

chunkyguy··on Top Programming Languages 2025
If there is HTML in the list then why not JSON?
chunkyguy··on Object-oriented design patterns in C and kernel development
> This introduces performance issues larger than the typical ones associated with vtable lookups.

Don't know about other programming languages but with Objective-C due to IMP caching the performance is close to C++ vtable

Name Iterations Total time (sec) Time per (ns)
  C++ virtual method call 1000000000 1.5 1.5
  IMP-cached message send 1000000000 1.6 1.6

chunkyguy··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
This is so true. I switch from iPhone 5s to iPhone SE to iPhone 13 mini. After my current phone dies I don't know what phone would I get next.
chunkyguy··on Is this the weirdest thing in C?
C has many syntactic sugar and [] operator is one of them. -> is another popular one.
chunkyguy··on Chimpanzees' performance on computer tasks changes when people watching them
> After a formal investigation in 1907, psychologist Oskar Pfungst demonstrated that the horse was not actually performing these mental tasks, but was watching the reactions of his trainer.

Sounds like machine learning

chunkyguy··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
> The tooling idea is particularly appropriate for JavaScript since many developers actually code in TypeScript and rely on compilers such as Babel, Webpack or the TypeScript compiler to output JavaScript.

Hot take

chunkyguy··on Ask HN: How do apps get into Apple App Store pretending something they are not?
Can you not simply use a feature flag that you control remotely to toggle the app between fake and real modes? You just need to toggle the flag on when submitting for review
chunkyguy··on Göttingen was one of the most productive centers of mathematics (2019)
this sounds like a good explanation:

> University of Göttingen had more academic freedom than generations past. They were promised intellectual autonomy and freedom from close religious supervision. Instead, they were recruited solely to advance knowledge and carry out original research. The education of students was also more egalitarian than it had been previously in Europe, as both rich and poor were admitted and trained.

There's also `clang -rewrite-objc` that "Rewrite Objective-C source to C++" which does the same trick of mapping objc code to `objc_msgSend`

chunkyguy··on Ask HN: Does it cost more to build an iOS app than a web app?
> While it does cost $99 to get in the store, the app can be used by millions for no additional cost. Hosting fees for a web app will grow along with the user base. Even without users, a domain plus a basic hosting plan will easily be more than $99/year.

$99/year is just to host the 'client-side'. Most likely you still the backend so that cost is still the same.

chunkyguy··on Show HN: Quetta – A privacy-first web browser with enhanced ad blocker inside
Piracy isn't a new buzzword but ever since Apple made it a selling point everyone is hopping on the train.

Also when it comes to privacy there's a thin line between collecting data and selling it to partners.

chunkyguy··on App store to be 'split in two' ahead of EU iPhone sideloading deadline: report
Also real security issues should be tackled on the os level. If the app sandboxing is actually robust then I don't see what is the problem.
chunkyguy··on Salesforce and Slack to pause all hiring in technology and product
> Thirteen. Instagram had thirteen employees when acquired by Facebook.

But then Instagram was mostly just a simple photo editor app without the social graph complexity. Sure you can still build and maintain such an app with thirteen people.

This is the best way for having a objc and c++ in same project.

I miss no access control for speaker. There is global default. I turn on speakers for one music app and at next launch another social media app plays their ads on full volume.
chunkyguy··on Ask HN: How do I get into consulting / freelancing?
The best freelancing jobs I got were from my network. Mostly people who were contacted by someone for a gig and they referred my name.

chunkyguy··on Ask HN: What programming languages are you using at $WORK?

chunkyguy··on An introduction to metaprogramming in Ruby
As an Objective-C developer Ruby sounds very familiar.
chunkyguy··on Mixing Swift and C++
> A C++ class or structure becomes a standalone type in Swift. Its relationship with base C++ classes is not preserved in Swift.

C++ `class Fern: public Plant` becomes two different types in Swift `struct Plant` and `struct Fern`, how is this supposed to help anyone?

chunkyguy··on “The days of using untyped languages on non-trivial projects are over.”
Can we just agree that there can never be one solution that fits all problem spaces. I use both C++ and ruby for different jobs and I like/hate both equally.
