Gets a gold rating! I've been playing even the VR versions on Linux (through steam).

chungus··on MOOC – free courses from University of Helsinki
Got recommended to do their Java MOOC ~10 years ago, rolled right into a job afterwards. Wouldn't be where I am today without this.
chungus··on Toon3D: Seeing Cartoons from a New Perspective
I imagine Spongebob episodes converted to this 3D format, and watching them with VR goggles, like you're there.
chungus··on The Emacs Window Management Almanac
nice writeup, I'd like to share a great complementary package that has been indispensable for me: zygospore

"zygospore lets you revert C-x 1 (delete-other-window) by pressing C-x 1 again"

chungus··on Descent 3 Source Code
edit: well this became a bit longer than I initially planned, I think I just had a lot to share when it comes to my recent VR adventures.

Well here I am: I initially got queasy as soon as I moved, then I'd immediately stop and take a break, longer breaks in the beginning. Initially I got a strong sense of de-realization / depersonalization after getting out of the digital world (i.e. looking at your hands and your brain being confused if they're real) But that also went away very quickly. The nausea, and 'am I still in the matrix' feeling got better within days, and went away within weeks. Now I can stomach any crazy topsy-turvy locomotion in any game. But I still feel the sweat and excitement, when swinging off 1000 feet high cliffs in Jet Island, or diving hundreds of meters deep in Subnautica.

It's just amazing how immersive it can be. I think you can only get there by having it at home and really giving yourself the time to get into it.

It's also re-ignited my love for single player games, especially modded triple A titles like Dragon Quest XI, or Resident Evil 2 (Remake) for example.

And btw, I run all of this on (arch) linux, on a Valve Index kit, using both SteamVR and OpenXR through Envision (Monado). It's been a bit of tinkering but that's only made it more satisfying for me. Plus, there are great communities like the Linux VR Adventure group: https://lvra.gitlab.io/

chungus··on KOReader Document Viewer for E Ink devices
I use this every single day, for English as well as Japanese books. Absolutely my go-to reader.
chungus··on Disney unveils the HoloTile floor
+1, honestly essential. Allows me to go for hours playing Jet Island
chungus··on Show HN: Shelly: Write Terminal Commands in English
Is there a cowboy mode, where I can skip this step and 'just run it'? (excuse me if this is mentioned in the docs)

chungus··on Rust without crates.io
On unstable there's the "-Z no-index-update" flag which "ensures that Cargo does not attempt to update the registry index. (...) to avoid the network latency for updating the index each time"

chungus··on Insurance Fraud at Japan Car Company BigMotor [video]
"The Bigmotor scandal came to light in July after the used-car dealer disclosed a third-party investigation report that revealed at least 1,275 cases of improper repairs by employees at body and paint shops. These involved using screwdrivers and sandpaper to scratch car bodies, hitting vehicles with golf ball-filled socks and doing unnecessary paint work."
chungus··on Valve bans 90.000 Dota2 smurf accounts
"Additionally, we have traced every single one of these smurf accounts back to its main account. Going forward, a main account found associated with a smurf account could result in a wide range of punishments, from temporary adjustments to behavior scores to permanent account bans."

I wonder if they did this by simply checking ip's or mac addresses, or using more sophisticated techniques like analyzing in-game play style.

chungus··on Nothing Phone (2)
funny, I'm in the exact same situation, with the same exact phone. Haven't had security updates for years now and considering pulling the trigger on this phone. Just waiting a bit to hear reviews.
chungus··on Diablo Pitch Document (1994) [pdf]
Thanks! I loved reading the first of these books, years ago, but this sequel has slipped past me! It feels like a good time to read it. Very nice format too, feels good in your hands, big pages, lot of quotes and optional reading paths.
chungus··on Lofi air traffic control – LAX
Yup, same here. It's why I also mostly listen to instrumental music. A lot of Aphex Twin. On top of that, when I listen to (catchy) music with lyrics, it keeps looping in the background of my brain non-stop, sometimes multiple days. A positive -sort of related- thing: it's very easy for me to listen to audio-books while driving or doing other things and not miss anything because I'm so focused on the speech.
chungus··on Nannou – An open-source creative-coding framework for Rust
This is a really cool project, named after a beautiful Aphex Twin song[1] (mentioned in their about: https://www.guide.nannou.cc/why_nannou.html)

chungus··on Show HN: Doc Converter – Convert PDF docs to Word documents on your computer
Interesting! I like the single payment as opposed to a subscription service. How does this compare to pandoc?
chungus··on I did Advent of Code on a Playstation
This is just great, makes me want to tinker with Dreams.
chungus··on Apple TV+ to adapt William Gibson’s cyberpunk novel Neuromancer
I really enjoyed Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Been recommending it to everyone that will listen. I felt it really nailed what I imagined Neuromancer would look like. E.g. the "hacking" scenes looked exactly like the 'ice' hacking in Neuromancer.

Will be checking out Pantheon as well, thanks.

chungus··on Emacs 29 is nigh
>For all three HaikuOS users out there, good news, you now have access to Emacs! (In all seriousness, I should check out HaikuOS one day)

That's great news!

chungus··on Writing down what I do in Obsidian
What Emacs mode might that be? And are there more reasons it falls short, besides the autocomplete?
chungus··on Katamari Hack (2011)
I really like this! Tip for on mobile, press and hold anywhere on the page to aim the katamari. Going to fire up my ps2 and play some katamari today!
chungus··on Robot Framework: generic open source automation framework
Fun to see this is still around! Used this in 2016, at a big bank. I did not enjoy it, but that can largely be attributed to the way management wanted us to use it. The tests had to be written in our native language (not English) which caused a lot of weird mixed language use behind the scenes. Then a manager would sign off on the test report, which we would deliver to him on paper.
chungus··on Eglot has landed on master: Emacs now has a built-in LSP client
Interesting, I've been using "the other one": lsp-mode, and have been quite happy with the results. Will see how eglot has progressed and if I can slim my config a bit.
chungus··on How I regained concentration and focus
Both of those sites are useful and I'd like to add one more: I've been using TheDailyEdit[0] app (it was on the front page here not too long ago). It doesn't tell you what political spectrum the publisher is on, but it does help you identify when the article is using manipulative language. The coolest thing though is that when you're in an article it shows you what was missing but reported by other sources. So I can read news I like but be sure that I'm not missing something because of 'bias by omission' by the publisher.

chungus··on Show HN: tere – A Faster Alternative to cd+ls
Cool! Also, I really like your demo gif! Super effective and fun way to go through all the features.
chungus··on Roguelike Tutorial in Rust (2019)
This is what I used to learn Rust, in tandem with The Book. I would read a chapter of The Book, then do a chapter of Herbert's Roguelike Tutorial. Very well written and fun material, that guides you deep into a tricky space with very little previous knowledge required. The maintainer is also very responsive to questions and pull requests. And has done an interesting talk[0] on procedural map generation at the annual 'Roguelike Celebration' conference[1] which is happening in October. (and for which the Call For Papers is still open)

chungus··on Why Rust is a great choice for startups
I think it's worth making the distinction between Maven as a build tool and Maven as a package manager, because the latter I think does work quite well.

I've had enough maven for a lifetime. Too much time spent fiddling with settings.xml files and m2 folders, debugging builds in enterprise environments with dozen module projects and a mix of internal and public dependencies.
