chungus··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Took me a very small amount of time to figure out pytorch was a one man effort that actually was discouraged by Facebook initially, and the dev no longer works there
chungus··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Just echo'ing the other comment.

I'm on arch, and with nearly no tinkering my index just works.

Only low level knowledge I think would be useful is the different VR runtimes. SteamVR vs Monado

chungus··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
Yup, although technically not replaced because I never used either of those products because I don't like sending my code to their black box. I have 2x24GB AMD gpu's, gotten from gamers on my local marketplace, one is connected with a 40cm riser cable. Running Qwen 27B and am very happy with its performance. Q8 with 135k context (arbitrary number, I could push it to 256). I like to use qwen 35B3A for mapping out entire code paths through our relatively complicated codebase/infra at work.

I think it's so good that I now scour the local marketplaces for good buys on 24GB cards that don't seem run through by miners and the likes, to build an even bigger rig for parallel execution.

Power usage is also totally not an issue, AI workload is very different from gaming.

tldr llama.cpp-vulkan with opencode on total 48GB VRAM AMD cards on arch btw.

chungus··on Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin speaks to Tatsuya Takahashi (2017)
Very nice read thank you. Still remember very clearly putting the Richard D James album CD into my Sony disc man for the very first time 22 years ago
chungus··on Show HN: Physical Pomodoro Timer with ESP32 and e-paper screen
Absolutely love it. Inspires me to think about porting my own productivity tools to an IRL device.
chungus··on The Internet Slum: is abandoning the Internet the next big thing? (2004)
For those not familiar, this post is by John Walker[0] one of the co-founders of Autodesk who made AutoCAD. He passed away last year[1]

chungus··on Winners of the $10k ISBN visualization bounty
Judging by your profile location being in the netherlands, I think you are confusing the generic Ziggo ISP blocked page[1], where it lists Russia Today and Sputnik News and then in another post ThePirateBay

In this case, the ISP blocked it because the website is anna's archive [2], which was blocked around a year ago, but they have not made a post about that.

If you put "pcm." in front of the link it will work (for now)

You should probably edit your post, so as not to misinform. But I have to admit this confusion stems from bad decisions at the ISP.

chungus··on RetroFab: Playable 3D simulations of vintage electronic games
Wow, there goes 20 minutes. Really enjoyed it, thanks.
chungus··on Show HN: Making AR experiences is still painful – had to make my own editor
Do you think it's just frustrating in the Meta landscape? I've been playing around with stuff I find on the "Linux VR Adventures wiki" [1]

I've got a different, (not meta) VR HMD, and am running things using Envision and Stardust XR.

Excuse me if none of this applies to mixed reality.

chungus··on Ask HN: How can I realistically change careers?
Yes, please do, I've been considering changing careers as well. (Currently software engineer)

Thanks for sharing! I like the look of this a lot. I'm always looking for personal knowledge base and note taking style tools.

Will you provide source code anywhere?

chungus··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
When I just started out, I used to take everybody's on-call service because it paid well. Also had the advantage that I learned the ropes quicker. Now-a-days I'm very happy to not be awoken at 3am, even if 1 weekend incident would amount to a couple grand.
chungus··on DIY Full-Frame Camera "Sitina 1" Nov 2024 Progress / Photo Update [video]
Has anybody attempted to do this DIY? The photo's look very warm and nostalgic.
chungus··on Bitcoin has made a new all-time high price
Anybody have a reliable, up-to-date pc build guide, for a full node? I find very fragmented information everywhere. I get that "most pc's can run Bitcoin core" but I'd like some more detailed information.
chungus··on Is yt-dlp/yt-dlp compromised?
I use this daily, and let it use browser cookies. So I hope it's not.
chungus··on Classic 3D videogame shadow techniques
Clicked this because it sounded interesting and was surprised to see one of my favorite movies in the introduction!

edit: really nice and nostalgic read, I played almost all of the games mentioned.

chungus··on Show HN: Satoshi9000 analog BTC key generator (mechanical)
Thank you for this extensive answer. Eager to see what kind of inventions and improvements you come up with in the future.
chungus··on Show HN: Satoshi9000 analog BTC key generator (mechanical)
Love this. Is the private key printed on a separate piece of paper? I saw only #####'s. How long does it take to generate a full key using dice?

Do they want to keep a centralized database of everybody's eyeballs? I'm not sure I'm interested in this. I'm predicting people getting their eyes gauged out in high stakes robberies.
chungus··on UEVR: An Exploration of Advanced Game Hacking Techniques (2023)
This is arguably the biggest thing to have happened to the VR space. I've been enjoying triple-A titles in VR, through UEVR since it came out a few months ago. It's reignited my love of gaming. The immersion is crucial to being able to forget about work and daily life for a couple hours.

Interesting take. I would be interested in reading more about these game devs dropping native linux support. Could you provide some examples?
chungus··on Isometric Projection in Game Development
Really cool music on the "character screen" (~6:33). Takes me back.
chungus··on Aphex Twin gave us a peek inside a 90s classic (2017)
I can still remember the first time I listened to aphex twin when I was 12. On my Sony discman. I've been listening for decades...
chungus··on Show HN: Word Slicer
That was fun. Wasn't able to get the hints, it just said "reveal word". But I got most of them. Be aware that swiping can trigger page back on phone browsers
chungus··on Playing guitar tablatures in Rust
Thanks for the great write-up. I've got an iced application that I wrote 3 years ago, and this has given me the motivation I needed to go update it
chungus··on Moaan InkPalm Plus is weird, cheap, small, and my kind of e-reader
this post made me go down a rabbit hole trying to find where I can buy this it seems the only place is AliExpress.

The alternative seems to be the boox Palma but it's 300 bucks compared to 100.

I'm currently using the 13 inch boox lumi or something. Happy daily user for 6 years. Kind of want a pocket device though
