chronicsonic··on Dieselgate, but for trains – some heavyweight hardware hacking
That wasn’t intentional though.
chronicsonic··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Its only now just arrived in beta on the iPad.
chronicsonic··on Firefox Developer Edition and Beta: Try Out Mozilla's .deb Package
All the popular ones are all Mozilla monitored, so I don’t agree that pretty much all of them aren’t.

Personally I don’t touch unmonitored addons anyway. There have been incidents of developers selling their Addon to some dodgy buyers who then started abusing it.

chronicsonic··on Scripts for Streamlining Your Homelab with Proxmox VE
Being disabled scripts like these really help me, I can’t sit behind a computer as much as I could before, but it’s still my main hobby.

I do a quick look over of the source to make sure it’s ok. It saves me so much time and pain.

chronicsonic··on Orion Browser by Kagi
I use Safari for Reddit because of the SinkIt extension:

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/sink-it-for-reddit/id644987363...

chronicsonic··on Orion Browser by Kagi
Yes it also supports Firefox extensions. Bypass Paywall Clean is a great one.
chronicsonic··on Google Drive files suddenly disappeared
Fair point, but so should the user.

This is a good reminder to everyone: Your cloud data still needs backing up.

chronicsonic··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
Yeah and a lot of the Ask posts are dominating and seem like bot posts by being a single simple questions.
chronicsonic··on Is there an updated list for verified good USB-C cables?
Yeah make sure the cable is USB-IF certified, you can find the list here (don’t trust Amazon product descriptions):

https://www.usb.org/products

About USB-IF:

“USB Implementers Forum, Inc. is a non-profit corporation founded by the group of companies that developed the Universal Serial Bus specification. The USB-IF was formed to provide a support organization and forum for the advancement and adoption of Universal Serial Bus technology. The Forum facilitates the development of high-quality compatible USB peripherals (devices), and promotes the benefits of USB and the quality of products that have passed compliance testing.”

chronicsonic··on The feds' vehicle 'kill switch' mandate is a gross violation of privacy
This unfortunately already exist in europe. Young drivers can get a black box installed in return for a discount on their insurance. This is because those costs for young drivers can be astronomical.

I would never trust a private for profit company with this much data.

chronicsonic··on Why TSA's Implementation of Facial Recognition Is More Dangerous Than You Think
Project 2025 is a good example of why we are very afraid.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_2025

chronicsonic··on We have decided to pause driverless operations across all of our fleets
Not just traditional car makers though. Didn’t Tesla do something similar by removing radar (against engineers advice) to decrease cost and thereby making self-driving much more unreliable and difficult?
chronicsonic··on Effect of fluoridated water on intelligence in 10-12-year-old school children
“Water was collected from initially identified endemic fluoride regions according to the geological research of Government of India. “

Wonder why those areas were so fluoride endemic? First thought is factory waste running off into rivers?

chronicsonic··on Do not put plastic in the microwave
That’s why the IKEA 365+ glass containers are the bees knees for freezing and microwaving your food.
chronicsonic··on It's okay to make something nobody wants
That’s why I like the Saveitforparts YouTube Channel. He’s the antimatter of those slick YouTube build channels, where everything is perfect.

Just a laid-back bloke building stuff in his garage, without giving a shit what other people might think about it.

chronicsonic··on My uBlock Origin filters to remove distractions
Brave on mobile has all the popular filters as an option to enable. So all built in, it’s great.
chronicsonic··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
Engineers love problem solving. I always see it as a challenge. No matter how unimportant.
chronicsonic··on UK Parliament passes Online Safety Bill
Thank you for wording that so well, that’s exactly how I feel about the situation.

Unfortunately we’re having our own problems here in Scotland (i.e. poverty, economy, low births, alcohol/drugs deaths). But I do now feel like we should drop our anchor that is England. The population is too polite to revolt and voluntarily mind controlled by a rotten press.

It’s a shame, being from the EU, I always looked up to Britain. Now while living here, I’m just astonished that people just accept or don’t care that Britain is going backwards. Westminster is a clown show.

We’re speed running towards a bleak future.

chronicsonic··on Willingham sends Fables into the public domain
Alan Moore’s battles with them are well known. Corporate America sucked him dry and his hatred for them turned him into a Wizard.
chronicsonic··on New LoRa RF distance record
Cool! I had a tour a few months ago at this Telescope in Dwingeloo. Highly recommended, was amazing to hear the live sound of a pulsar (in the Crab Nebula).
chronicsonic··on Tesla breaks down mid-turn and causes more than nine hours of travel chaos
I assume the roads were blocked by traffic, we have narrow A roads in Britain.
chronicsonic··on To catch fentanyl traffickers, feds dig into crypto markets
Yes that’s also my thinking. We’re at war on many different levels apart from direct military confrontation. The US is currently very fragile on many levels. The constant political bickering between the only 2 parties is one of them.
chronicsonic··on Apple's soldered-in SSDs are engineered in the WORST way possible [video]
He suggests you should be able to just clone your drive and boot from it over usb-c. Surely he knows the security implications of that? In fact he neglects to mention any security reasons Apple might have for this design.

I agree with some of his points, but can’t form an opinion because he ignores the security implications.

chronicsonic··on Most promoted and blocked domains among Kagi Search users
I use XSearch to replace the default Safari search engine, it also supports bangs.

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/xsearch-for-safari/id157990206...

chronicsonic··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
Same for me, I am prescribed medical cannabis for neuropathic pain and by default they gave me 18% THC. After a year of getting more and more anxious and panic I did some research and ecided to try 5% THC with 10% CBD, this is much better. No more couch lock, better sleep, more productive and waayyy less anxiety. Same if not better effect on pain.
chronicsonic··on One week of empathy training (2019)
This might be related to Apple, normally Apple is very good for accessibility, but even the BBC has challenges with subtitles on AppleTV, same with the Dutch NPO TV:

“Why are there no subtitles on BBC iPlayer via Apple TV?

There are technical challenges associated with delivering subtitles to Apple TV which will require a significantly different solution to that which we use on all other platforms. We are working towards it but don't currently have timelines associated with this support.”

chronicsonic··on Threads has 10M sign ups in seven hours
I’m confused, one of the top comments says its app only, but here it shows its not.
chronicsonic··on Drastic increase in Tor clients from Germany
Wonder if the fact that they’re related to NATO, who is at war, have anything to do with it.
chronicsonic··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
example is ferrari, they are so well known that they don’t need to advertise their cars.
chronicsonic··on 15” MacBook Air Teardown
Yeah bit strange with the future EU rules calling for user replaceable batteries.
