chromaton··on CFTC Orders Tether and Bitfinex to Pay Fines Totaling $42.5M
2 differences: 1. You have to have USD to pay taxes, which most Americans have to do. 2. The feds will bail out depositors in banks that have screwed up badly.
chromaton··on Gödel's Disjunction [video]
We do have a natural experiment which may provide some insight into consciousness: conjoined twins. They seem to be able to both think independently but also communicate wordlessly.
chromaton··on Michelin's airless tires are scheduled for market launch in 2024
I was impressed by the Slime brand bike tire tubes. They're thicker rubber than the stock tubes and pre-filled with Slime self-sealing compound.
chromaton··on How Mushroom Time-Lapses Are Filmed [video]
OK, I understand.
chromaton··on How Mushroom Time-Lapses Are Filmed [video]
At 9 seconds in you can see film cameras.
chromaton··on Man can change his pupil size on command
You can definitely improve foot dexterity. People who have lost their hands get much better through practice.
chromaton··on My Tungsten Cube (2019)
Cut it off the end of a bar.
chromaton··on Show HN: Video conference from 6ft away using your hands or phone to interact
The Obsbot Tiny webcam also has some gesture control, but not quite as extensive as this. I love the tracking feature that lets me move around without having to about staying in the frame.

chromaton··on Stonewall Nation
Either the Census count is inaccurate or there's voter fraud.

In case anybody's interested in trying this, Loving County, Texas has an official population of 64, with 66 people (that's right) casting votes in the 2020 election.

chromaton··on Transcranial Focused Ultrasound to the Right Prefrontal Cortex
Maybe not the greatest, most rigorous scientific experiment ever, but you have to start somewhere.
chromaton··on Why is it so hard to be rational?
Quote Investigator says it's from 1928 newspaper column: https://quoteinvestigator.com/2016/04/21/impress/
chromaton··on Dollar stores make up nearly half of all new store openings in the U.S.
Strike up a conversation. People do like talking about where to shop for the best bargains. "Hey, does this place have a good deal on X? I usually buy that at Lidl."
chromaton··on Japan's cherry blossom: as indisputable as climate change evidence gets
Yeah, I get that this article shows evidence, but it's not the slam dunk that the author is making it out to be.
chromaton··on Japan's cherry blossom: as indisputable as climate change evidence gets
I hate to do this but... cherry trees only live about 15-40 years. They're cultivated and bred for their blossoms, among other things. How can we be sure that we haven't selected trees for earlier blooms?
chromaton··on Black 3.0 – The blackest black acrylic paint
From the website:

>Q. Can I paint my car / bike etc…

>A. NO - 3.0 is quite fragile and will just scratch off, it won’t weather well.

chromaton··on Sports Owners Use Their Teams to Avoid Millions in Taxes
>- Why can Trump write off a $70k haircut but I can't write off a $35 haircut?

Probably claims it as a necessary expense for being on TV.

>Why can my employer buy my laptop, and I can use it in my off time for video games but if I buy a laptop, even to help with say an LLC I might own, I can only write off the 'portion' used for work?

Stuff provided to employees for personal use is supposed to be taxed as a benefit. It's just likely that this hasn't been investigated by the IRS.

> - Why can my employer buy us lunch but if I work on my own I can't write off a meal except under specific circumstances?

That one's a can of worms and I know the rules have changed a number of times on this. You might consider inviting potential client to lunch. Then he or she might invite you next time as a potential vendor to lunch.

Similarly: company retreats, teambuilding exercises, and gifts to clients. Consult your tax professional.

chromaton··on Canada weather: Dozens dead as heatwave shatters records
I totally agree that's correct except for key qualifying statement.
chromaton··on Canada weather: Dozens dead as heatwave shatters records

You'll be shocked to learn about steam rooms.

In the 70's it was yogurt.
chromaton··on HBO Max accidentally sent an integration email test to users
It's a promo for the new season of Silicon Valley.
chromaton··on If you think psychological science is bad, imagine how bad it was in 1999
Yeah, I'm reminded of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance where the author was driven to insanity by the quest to define "quality".
chromaton··on If you think psychological science is bad, imagine how bad it was in 1999
Yes, there are legit reasons for this to happen, as well as cherry-picking.
chromaton··on If you think psychological science is bad, imagine how bad it was in 1999
Somehow one of the 3 experimental groups has 16 people, whereas the other groups have 14 people. Wonder why...
chromaton··on If you think psychological science is bad, imagine how bad it was in 1999
Not necessarily. You could just fall back on authority, superstition, or navel-gazing.
chromaton··on If you think psychological science is bad, imagine how bad it was in 1999
>what tools do you use to scientifically analyze the scientific process?

Iterating on existing systems to see if you can get results to converge and also testing new systems to see if they also result in known good values.
