christoph-heiss··on GitHub appears to be struggling with measly three nines availability
Neither Forgejo nor Codeberg are owned by _any_ company. Very important distinction.
christoph-heiss··on Regex Blaster
And all the text is grey-on-grey and basically unreadable. Not to even mention accessibility.
christoph-heiss··on Fresh File Explorer – VS Code extension for navigating recent work
That's why any repo with a README ridden with emojis (and other telltale signs) is just an instant nope nowadays.

(One of the only good things about GH is, that if you block some account, it will tell you if that account contributed to some repo at the top. Makes it very easy to filter out slopcode.)

christoph-heiss··on Gitas – A tool for Git account switching
Yeah. Unfortunately, just goes to show how many people think Git = Github.
christoph-heiss··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me
I think that they felt the need to offer such a service says everything, basically admitting that LLMs just plagiarize and violate licenses.
christoph-heiss··on Danish Students Face Legal Action and Fines over Textbook Piracy
Oh yeah, but LLMs ingesting and spitting them out is not piracy. Right.
christoph-heiss··on AI Usage Policy
No? Licenses still apply even if you _don't_ get sued?
christoph-heiss··on AI Usage Policy
Not sure why you are getting downvoted, given that the original site is such a jarringly user-hostile mess.
christoph-heiss··on Skill.md: An open standard for agent skills
Well, given the subject ..
christoph-heiss··on What *is* code? (2015)
Fortunately, at least in Europe, there are definitely companies still around who either don't force the usage of slop machines or even have a culture of rejecting them completely (yes, that's a thing, and I'm glad to be working at such a company).

So no, this isn't universally true.

christoph-heiss··on What *is* code? (2015)
Why are you using LLMs then, if you enjoy the actual process of thinking about a problem and solving it by writing code?

It's definitely a more enjoyable world this way.

christoph-heiss··on Claude Code On-the-Go
> Now I code from my phone.

Except that you are doing anything else but coding here. Coding involves writing code, which isn't actually done by the author here.

christoph-heiss··on GPU Video acceleration in the Windows Subsystem for Linux now available
Not really anymore. Wine, Proton, VK3D, .. have improved so much that the native gaming experience on Linux is more than viable. The Steam Deck might be the best example of that.

I'm very happy that the last few years I didn't have to keep a horrid Windows install around, just to play a game every now and then.

christoph-heiss··on DirectX is coming to the Windows Subsystem for Linux
FYI:

This is the first draft of the Microsoft Virtual GPU (vGPU) driver. The driver exposes a paravirtualized GPU to user mode applications running in a virtual machine on a Windows host. This enables hardware acceleration in environment such as WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) where the Linux virtual machine is able to share the GPU with the Windows host.

So this isn't actual "DirectX on Linux", just a driver for a virtual GPU exposed to WSL-guests to enable guests to directly use DirectX, more or less.

Probably most useful for Azure-based projects.

christoph-heiss··on Systemd, 10 years later: a historical and technical retrospective
I honestly didn’t see the post before and I’m kinda glad that I have now. Not every repost is bad, also timezones and such.
christoph-heiss··on Popcorn Linux
The project seems still alive and active, at least according to its recent RFC'ing from LKML [0].

For some more information, Phoronix also recently wrote an article [1] about it, also the GitHub repo [2] seems to be somewhat active (last commit was 06-02-2020).

christoph-heiss··on MemGuard: Secure sensitive information in memory in Go
Not really a cross-platform API, is it?
christoph-heiss··on Seasteading
Off-Topic: The site horrible "jitters" when scrolling around, pretty much unreadable/unuseable. At least for me with Chrome 74 on Fedora. Firefox 67 is fine.
christoph-heiss··on The Zipper Rule on German Roads
Pretty much the rule in Austria too.
christoph-heiss··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
Are you by chance on macOS?

This seems to be a general issue on macOS with any terminal emulator, according to [0].

christoph-heiss··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
Another GPU-accelerated terminal emulator is alacritty[0].

Although it has a lot less features than kitty and really is only usable with tmux (or GNU screen, whatever), it is more or less perfect for people who want their terminal to do just one thing and that one thing pretty fast.

Disclaimer: Haven't tried kitty yet and using alacritty for a nearly a year now.

christoph-heiss··on 66-way merge: “Christ, that's not an octopus, that's a Cthulhu merge”
There is a good explanation over here[0]. Also, HN-discussion for this article[1].

christoph-heiss··on GTA V – Graphics Study (2015)
Exactly! I just stumbled upon this blog and thought that this is something for HN. Really pleasurable.
christoph-heiss··on Show HN: Browser Pong
Updated the title, thanks!
