christocracy··on Flutter: a Portable UI Framework for Mobile, Web, Embedded, and Desktop
That’s right. I’m a professional plugin developer. I’ve got my hands in both worlds, making dart APIs into the Obj-c/Java bridge where I’m implementing native APIs.

And several universes as well...I do plugins for React Native and Cordova, as well: same thing but JavaScript APIs into the Obj-c/Java bridge.

christocracy··on Flutter desktop shells
Dart isn’t difficult to get productive with in a couple of days if you have experience with Java or Typescript.
christocracy··on 48% of Canadians on brink of insolvency, online survey says
Yea, he writes so much, you have to be willing to read him for a while and get to know him and his lingo.

For me back in 2011, I was “house horny” at the time, and looking for an opposing viewpoint.

Now he’s my financial advisor and I’m a millionaire renter :)

christocracy··on 48% of Canadians on brink of insolvency, online survey says
It’s all about the size of monthly payment. Total debt, be damned.
christocracy··on 48% of Canadians on brink of insolvency, online survey says
I linked http://greaterfool.ca higher up, but I think it's the best source for Canadian financial info. Garth Turner does a really great service cutting through the bull with a blog article every day of the week!.

Search his site on google for "canada debt" for plenty of articles with links to real data / surveys.

christocracy··on 48% of Canadians on brink of insolvency, online survey says
It matches everything I’ve been reading on http://greaterfool.ca for the last 7 years.

christocracy··on Why Is PayPal So Successful Yet They Treat Merchants Like Crap?
I’m a merchant and I once won a PayPal chargeback.

I sell a software product. Customer generates a key to unlock the code. Once a key is generated, that key will unlock the product forever; it cannot be revoked, thus no refund at that point.

In the dispute form, I wrote “It’s like buying a DVD from Walmart — once the cellophane is torn open...”

PayPal judged in my favor and refused the chargeback of $349.

I’ve had 2 or 3 chargebacks from Visa and never won those.

christocracy··on Flutter will change everything, and is an excellent choice for iOS development
I’ve been using RN since the beginning. I grokked Flutter / Dart in a couple days in September.

The development experience with Flutter is really excellent, I’ve found. Laying out UI is really nice and easy. I really like it.

christocracy··on Flutter: the good, the bad and the ugly

christocracy··on Flutter: the good, the bad and the ugly
I make Cordova, React Native, NativeScript and now Flutter plugins for a living. I’ve been using RN since it was born and I use it every day.

Flutter has a superior developer experience in my opinion.

Dart was a breeze to pick up.

christocracy··on Flutter: the good, the bad and the ugly
I spend most of my time with JavaScript, Obj-c and Java. It took me about 3 days to wrap my head around dart and start writing productive code.
christocracy··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
AMA about Manitoba: I was born there.

If resisdential RE tanks in Canada, a real possibility with rising interests rate and extreme debt levels, the economy goes down with it.

Mining / Oil & Gas isn’t going to save it.

christocracy··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
I'm pretty confident that residential real-estate activity (people selling houses to each other) in major urban centres (eg: YVR, GTA) eclipses that of mining towns.
christocracy··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
Certainly not all that construction is related to real-estate. Still real-estate as a % of GDP eclipses "mining, Oil & Gas".

christocracy··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
Real-estate (in addition to associated construction) is bigger for than mining and oil:

christocracy··on Reading Aloud to Young Children Has Benefits for Behavior and Attention
Don’t forget “Mighty Jack”, which leads into the Zita series.

I like all books by Raina Telgemeier, as well.

I read these graphic novels to my 3 and 6 year-olds, over and over.

christocracy··on I built a progressive web app and published it in three app stores
>requiring a Mac

No kidding. If you hope to develop apps for iOS, you better have a machine with the corresponding build tools.

I make a number of Cordova plugins. Many devs without a Mac often use PhoneGap Build as their dev build service. The turn-around to make a code-change and see the result must be about 60s.

christocracy··on Tech workers worry about age discrimination at age 40: Study
I was targeting the “or” in the parent statement:

>or anti-people-who-didn't-grow-up-with-Internet

I wanted to point out there was this small generation of us (X) who “didn’t grow up with the internet” yet were instrumental in building it up.

I’m with you on the advantages growing up with 8-bit computing in the 80s. We’re a unique generation with a foot in both worlds.

christocracy··on Tech workers worry about age discrimination at age 40: Study
I’m 45. I was downloading games from BBSes with my C=64 in 1986; connecting to BBSes with long-distance calls.

Yes, we grokked the internet immediately and, as a group, developed it while you were watching cartoons and playing on your XBox.

christocracy··on A slump in new businesses is a drag on the economy
“Mounting evidence suggests that the notion that the 2007 crash happened because people with shoddy credit borrowed to buy houses they couldn’t afford is just plain wrong. The latest comes in a new NBER working paper arguing that it was wealthy or middle-class house-flipping speculators who blew up the bubble”

christocracy··on Ask HN: Have you regretted making something open-source?
The model I have seems to work. I don't have any pressure to change anything.
christocracy··on Ask HN: Have you regretted making something open-source?
Well, what I tell customers is "what you're paying for is support and latest updates.

Customers get access to a private repo for latest updates and priority support for 1 year (yearly maintenance fee = $150/year). ~20% of customers pay the yearly.

Each purchased key is bound to a mobile app id. If customer wants to make 3 apps, they need to purchase 3 keys.

Public repo contains latest stable release; purchased keys unlock product in public repo forever.

iOS lib is free. Only Android lib requires a key to unlock it. This gives users the chance to freely develop iOS first (and hopefully get hooked, like cheap crack ;). Chances are they're going to release an Android version too since most of the earth uses Android.

The Android version is fully operational in DEBUG builds. Key is enforced for RELEASE builds.

christocracy··on Ask HN: Have you regretted making something open-source?
I made an open source lib for Cordova (eventually ported to React Native and others). I found I'd gained a number of users with few contributing back, so I forked my own project, closed the source into compiled and encrypted binaries. Now I sell licenses and support, generating ~$20k/month. Innovation has skyrocketed since I've been able to dedicate 100% of my time to the products for the last 2.5 years.
christocracy··on Ford to cut North America, Asia salaried workers by 10 percent
Cap gains are taxed lower because it's already taxed money being invested. In addition, it's a reward for risking your money by investing it into the economy (no, this money is not "out of circulation")
christocracy··on Software Developers after 40, 50 and 60 Who're Still Coding
45, self-employed. I create and sell an iOS/Android plugin for use with Cordova, React Native and NativeScript apps. I love my job.
christocracy··on Ask HN: Can we find out why a specific ad appears in our Facebook feed?
Perhaps you're not the only ones at this restaurant to notice and discuss this same cocktail, such that Facebook has learned of a "Campari thing" from others before you?

I assume FB would have learned several friends have joined together in the same location.

christocracy··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
Utterly false. Staying alive has nothing to do with React Native or Cordova or any particular framework. It's about implementing the native APIs that allow that behaviour.

I'm the author of a couple of modules that allow your RN app to operate in the background:

https://github.com/transistorsoft/react-native-background-fe...

https://github.com/transistorsoft/react-native-background-ge...

Both of these modules were ported from Cordova and have since been ported to NativeScript.

christocracy··on Apple says Pokémon Go is the most downloaded app in its first week ever
On iOS, when location updates are engaged via CLLocationManager#startUpdatingLocation (assuming all required permissions are in-place, eg NSLocationAlwaysAuthorization, UIBackgroundModes), an iOS app will remain running in background indefinitely until #stopUpdatingLocation is executed, when iOS will immediately put the app to sleep.
christocracy··on Apple says Pokémon Go is the most downloaded app in its first week ever
yes, you can. I created a plugin for Cordova/React Native/NativeScript that does this:

https://github.com/transistorsoft/cordova-background-geoloca...

https://github.com/transistorsoft/react-native-background-ge...

Here I am driving around Iceland with my sample app, completely in background. Tracking engages automatically when device is detected to be moving.

christocracy··on Longevity in JavaScript Frameworks
ExtJS dates back to 2006 -- not 2009. It had a good run of ~9 years.
