" in some foreign language" is indeed irrelevant, I don't believe the "some dude yelling" (talking) is however. I've read different studies that suggest talking on the phone even while using bluetooth is severely distracting for the driver.

Andedotally, I've been in cars with taxi drivers who were on the phone when I got in and talked for the entire ride, whilst navigating a city traffic, while also looking at their gps to work out where I needed to go. I did not feel safe in the slightest.

If it ever happens again I'd like to think I could ask them in a polite way to end the conversation or exit the cab, but how?

chrissyb··on Where is the Modelling Software for 3D Printing?
I think there are free ruby addons you can add to make SketchUp models more printer friendly(adjusting wall thickness etc).

I don't have a link I looked at it a while back now.

chrissyb··on In 1962, a college student answers an ad: “Mortuary Assistant required”
Not a doctor but.. You're falling for a bit of a naturalistic fallacy here. Just as Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral however inhaling its dust can come with very serious health problems, so can hay contain mould which can also cause serious lung disease. http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/farmers_lung.html

chrissyb··on Printing a wall-sized world map and what I've learned from it
I wanted to start up something like this a couple of years ago called BeachBooks or something, reading a waterproof book while floating in a ocean or pool would be unreal. I have no idea how you would ever sell publishers this idea though!

I've experimented with printing to tyvek before on a Canon ipf700 but I was using standard colorjet pigments which do not adhere to the tyvek.

I tried ringing around to see if I could source inks that would work with tyvek to use with this machine, but inks are expensive and i'd probably need a whole new dedicated printhead. In short I gave up.

What kind of resolutions were you able to achieve on Tyvek?

I read through and couldnt help but think of a video about Perter Bellerby i watched a few years back who makes some of the most beautiful globes I've ever seen. https://vimeo.com/103263135

I really like Domink's project but I would have liked to have seen more diy trial and error.

Watching this video of Jimmy Diresta's would have made mounting on a timber french cleat a breeze.

If your garage is getting to 50°C you've got a major insulation problem! Where are you located?

In both cases if min and max operating temperature are an issue it may be best to install in an FIP enclosure and use ducting to keep the enclosure and an optimal temperature.

The diamond still sparkles though, even after a car wreck.
chrissyb··on How to Ramen-ize Dried Pasta and Rice
0.5% salt by my calculation is still 2.6 teaspoons (10g) of salt - In 2L of water that does not seem insignificant. When written in terms of percentages it does.

I'd settle for that holographic puppy at the end of the video!
chrissyb··on Show HN: Hacker News' “most unique support email of 2014”
Totally agree, i sometimes reminisce about the good ol' days with my Nokia N70 i bought in 2005. Here's some memorable achievements:

- I watched most of the world cup 2006 games live streamed over 3G. -I used to frequently use google maps which without GPS would use cell towers triangulate my position within a couple hundred meter radius. - Used it as a wireless AP -And even uploaded videos to youtube.

When i first heard of the iPhone i wasn't that impressed as i already been using what i considered a smartphone. Obviously i that's all changed now! ;)

chrissyb··on This American Life: Batman
I listened to this last week so it's not entirely fresh in my mind, but i remember this particular portion of the story seemed jarring to me and was a disappointing end to the story.

Correlation does not imply causation.

chrissyb··on The pitch deck that helped us get an $865M valuation
I wonder if their use of "BS" within the pitchdeck gives the impression of plain speak.
chrissyb··on NASA: We're sending humans to Mars
Considering the population of Earth has more than doubled from around 3 billion in 1960 to 7 billion in 2014 i hardly think we can blame NASA for spending a trillion dollars.

On the scale of world hunger over a 50 year period, one trillion is a blip. On the other hand spending a trillion on space research over 50 years seems well worth it if within the next 50 we can colonize other planets, moons or terrariums and ensure that the Human race has a backup should something catastrophic happen.

chrissyb··on NASA: We're sending humans to Mars
I suppose that is true, is it to early to talk space elevators? ;)
chrissyb··on NASA: We're sending humans to Mars
This is great but we should really colonize the moon first. It allows us to get all the necessary systems in place in a test environment. Earth is only 3 days away from the moon rather than 9 months to Mars.

It also makes sense to work on the moon first so we can use it to leap frog to mars rather than sending a shuttle through earths atmosphere.

chrissyb··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
Thats a big leap, by your logic you could relax even more by taking a hit of Heroin.

I'm able to dismiss spirituality because I'm a skeptic and believe in evidence, not anecdotes. The power for the human mind to self delude is limitless.

chrissyb··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
You're right, meditation is relaxation with a sprinkle of woo.
chrissyb··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
The thing i don't like about the term "meditation" is that its too closely intertwined with spirituality. Where meditation should actually be associated with relaxation.

This article only mentions the control group twice, once to say "None of these changes were seen in the control group, indicating that they had not resulted merely from the passage of time". This is just bad reporting - How about telling us what the control group were actually doing?

If they (control group) were not taking part in any type of consistent relaxation for 8 weeks then how would you expect to see any changes in the control group?

chrissyb··on Ask HN: Gaming with one arm
Your foot pedal idea is really interesting, i also just thought that there is a certain amount of pivoting ankles can perform while seated. So the two feet holsters could pivot from side to side and forward and backward. If all these movements were linked to potentiometers, calibrated to an individuals movement that gives you a total of 6? variable inputs.

You're definitely on the money with your reference to the girl from your school too, our feet's dexterous movements are surely only limited by use/practice.

chrissyb··on Ask HN: Gaming with one arm
Yeah he is dominate right-handed, thankfully. Will look into the one handed keyboards too!

Thanks for that!

chrissyb··on Ask HN: Gaming with one arm
