chrismbarr··on Jonathan Blow's new game, The Witness, is out
Well, I was about to add it to my Steam wish list until I read this. My only non-work computer is a Mac, so I guess I won't be playing it until it's released there.
chrismbarr··on Jonathan Blow's new game, The Witness, is out
And for all those wondering, YES you should go buy & play Braid if you haven't already. It's an astounding game. A 2D platformer-style game that deals with in-game undo, time travel, time distortion, and multiple realities. It's mind bending, fun, and beautiful. Watch the trailer for it here if you haven't seen it before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqtSKkyJgFM
chrismbarr··on A Canvas Made of Pixels
I'm really surprised there's no photos of the build process. It's hard to tell if this is actually what is being described, or just a blog post around a photo of a framed image.
chrismbarr··on Customers now wary of security holes in connected devices, survey finds
There's no perfect security, and honestly it sounds like you're already going above & beyond what most people would be doing anyway.
chrismbarr··on Oculus Rift: Available for pre-order
I saw the same thing, but it appears to be fixed now. A quick fix/reaction by Oculus!
chrismbarr··on Netflix socks detect when you've dozed off and pause your TV show
The same thing happens on the Sony Blu-Ray player I watch Netflix through (via "apps" or whatever). Usually after more than 3 episodes maybe, with no interaction from the remote.

chrismbarr··on Car turns driver in for hit-and-run
There's a lot more to a self-diving car than just software, there is a ton of needed sensors and other hardware.

Let's say an expensive self-driving car is around $100,000 new, even buying that car used 3 years later would be out of the budget for many people.

chrismbarr··on Ask HN: I don't like my new job, now what?
Work is one thing, your co-workers are another. If you don't like the people you are spending 40+ hours a week with, I'd begin looking for something else. It sounds like you've given it a pretty fair shot. Software is easy to fix compared to people.

How long have you been there so far?

chrismbarr··on Adsuck – a small DNS server that spoofs blacklisted addresses
Very late in seeing this comment! It's a Netgear WNDR3700v4. DD-WRT is supported on it, and i did successfully get it installed, but I had no connection to the internet with it. There was a wiki page for my specific router model with instructions which I followed. I went back & forth with people on their forums and they were pretty much telling me "oh yeah, don't install that version that the instructions tell you to!" and "well yeah, this whole project is beta, so what do you expect?" All of that combined kind of turned me off to this project from now on :/
chrismbarr··on Comcast injects JavaScript into webpages to show copyright notices to customers
I live in a small town in Georgia and literally my only internet access options are Comcast and AT&T. AT&T's service here is fairly slow compared to Comcast's offerings, and since I work from home remote for a company based in Florida I have to choose the fastest options available to me, and that's Comcast. I would love to have more options, but I just don't.

I only pay for internet access, I don't use their cable TV or telephone offerings. Internet alone is about $80/month. I just ran a speed test and I get 14.1Mbps down & 8.6Mbps up. I forget which speed tier I'm paying for, but I know I'm paying for much more than that! Ugh...

chrismbarr··on Adsuck – a small DNS server that spoofs blacklisted addresses
is the best way to do this to run something like DD-WRT? Or is there a way to accomplish this with stock router firmware? I ask because I recently tried to install DD-WRT but ran into issue and had to revert to my stock firmware.
chrismbarr··on Ad Blockers Will Change How Ads Are Sold
It probably depends on the types of ads (and each person's personal preferences). For me, I'm like you in that I'd much prefer to see ads of musicals/plays and other local goings-on in my own hometown or as tourist somewhere instead of ads for toothpaste, cars, apps, etc.
chrismbarr··on VW engineers have admitted manipulating CO2 emissions data-paper
So why isn't oil like this normally? Are the downsides to doing this?
chrismbarr··on Data Saved in Quartz Glass Might Last 300M Years
This would be a good solution assuming you only needed to write once to your archive. Since this is literally etched in glass, there's no way to edit any data. Also, instructions on what to do with a box of glass someone finds 100 years from now would be helpful. :P
chrismbarr··on Magic Leap reveals more details about its technology
I did as well until I read this comment, thank you! The names are similar, but these are vastly different products.
chrismbarr··on Page Weight Matters (2012)
I would love this. My company just updated their public-facing website and it has a 28MB 1080p video playing in the page header. The site was outsourced, but I work as a web developer for some of our products and was asked by the marketing team to give the new site a look over.

The marketing team was surprised to learn how big the file was since the outsourced team "ensured" them that the new website would be lightweight. Oh well... Now the video has been reduced to a 16MB at 720p, which is still ludicrous to me, but they just really like having the video on the home page more than they want a truly lightweight page.

And to be fair, the video does not load when viewed on a mobile device, so at least there's that.

chrismbarr··on The Cost of Mobile Ads on News Websites
They do show the real dollar cost as well. I assume this is if you had to pay for each MB of data usage though.
chrismbarr··on W3C Working Draft: CSS Round Display Level 1
Round displays look nice on a watch, but I really don't think they will work well on many other form factors... I mean I can't think of one.

Even then, how many watch users browse the web on their watch? (serious question, I don't have a smart watch) - Is it a bad experience right now because websites aren't optimised for round displays?

chrismbarr··on “Just remove the duck” (2013)
I've heard of (but never tried) a similar thing done when showing design concepts to a client. Usually several variations are prepared, and if you're any good they will all be viable options. When presenting to a client they will normally want to try and critique something regardless of how good the designs actually are.

The story goes that you are supposed to make an obvious mistake, like a spelling error, on purpose. This will fulfill the clients' need to provide a critique and allow good designs to remain an option.

chrismbarr··on Apple WWDC 2014 Live Streaming
If you are using Chrome press F12 to open the devtools. Then press Esc and to to the "Emulation" tab. now choose an iPad or something and spoof your user agent as that.

it's dumb, but i think that should work. You will need to have QuickTime installed though, I don't think there's a way around that.
