chrisjarvis··on Insulation: First the body, then the home (2011)
I have never lived in a cold climate, but this sounds sensible to me. Much of the FIRE, "Mr Moneymustache"-esque advice around saving money contains this suggestion.

I like this line: "Indeed, these high-insulating garments demonstrate how valuable fossil fuels are as a material, and how foolish we are to simply burn them." Thanks for sharing.

chrisjarvis··on AirPods Max
A cynical take Ive heard before: replacing a power cable with a lithium ion rechargeable battery turns many devices into a quasi subscription service (you pay for a product but then must "renew your subscription" when the battery goes out).
chrisjarvis··on World's first no-kill eggs go on sale in Berlin (2018)
I have no idea thanks for the extra information! it’s a quote I’ve always liked. When I googled who said it Hillel came up.
chrisjarvis··on A Worsening Culture War
I never said or implied a NET negative. My comment was specifically talking about effects on wage earners in the US.
chrisjarvis··on World's first no-kill eggs go on sale in Berlin (2018)
noted, thanks.
chrisjarvis··on A Worsening Culture War
both sides push for higher immigration and a globalized market, which have more effect on wage-earners in the US than any policy in "Democratic states". Imo you are missing the forest thru the trees, at scale they really are the same.

"be the change you want to see in the world" - Gandhi

"If not you, then who?" - Hillel, first- century Jewish scholar

"would you like some cheese with that whine?" - my mom

chrisjarvis··on Amazon Sidewalk
like many things created by Amazon, for me I would categorize this as "technologically very cool but I have no interest in being a part of it or putting this is in my home"

chrisjarvis··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?
Maybe I should have clarified what drugs I was referring to, not pot obviously.

Decriminalization of the drugs that destroy users lives has been show to be more effective at what?

chrisjarvis··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?
As one person without large resources the highest impact thing you could do today for the type of area you are describing is to procure a firearm and start killing drug dealers.

I'm not suggesting you do this but this is without a doubt the answer to your question.

chrisjarvis··on Brave Browser Passes 20M Monthly Active Users and 7M Daily Active Users
+1 Vivaldi is a beautifully designed product in my experience. I haven't used on mobile tho.
chrisjarvis··on The 'education bubble' is not merely a financial crisis; it is a moral crisis
I really like this format and found both sides very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
chrisjarvis··on On William Deresiewicz’s “The Death of the Artist”
Wow that was rather grim... I can't tell if the problem is more with algorithmic curation (and the big tech middleman squeezing margins) or with consumer behavior (expecting everything to be effectively free)? I will keep this in mind because this space, monetizing content creators online, is very interesting to me.

Great read, thanks for sharing.

chrisjarvis··on Recycling was a lie to sell more plastic, recycling industry veteran says
I have thought about this a bit and I wonder why can't you just have a return fee for the "non-single use" (probably glass) container. This would not be unheard of, if you've ever bought the expensive milks that come in a glass bottle you will get money if you bring the container back to the store (at least where I live). Also things like kegs and propane containers operate this way.

The problem is that this system at scale would require a widely accepted standard of "container", otherwise people would just accumulate an endless number of different containers for different restaurants so nothing ends up being reused.

chrisjarvis··on Mark in the Middle
I doubt the people who take time out of their workdays for political activism are, by and large, the "10x engineers".
chrisjarvis··on 2020 Bundles
Possibly focusing on a specific niche?

examples in the realm of streaming: indie/arthouse: https://mubi.com/ horror: https://shudder.com/ anime: funimation or crunchyroll

chrisjarvis··on Universe in a Nutshell App
it is so tiresome constantly reading comments here of people complaining when cool things aren't given away for free.
chrisjarvis··on Activists Are Protesting Against Palantir Across the Country This Week
>its an intl. human right to be allowed to seek asylum from ~~poverty~~

citation needed. danger, yes but poverty?

your third bullet also implies that all illegal immigrants are refugees seeking asylum.

chrisjarvis··on Apple CEO Impressed by Remote Work, Sees Permanent Changes
I hope for this too, less in terms of politics but in terms of spreading the country's wealth more evenly from the coasts to the middle of the country. But same general idea.
chrisjarvis··on Apple CEO Impressed by Remote Work, Sees Permanent Changes
Oh no you had to buy a chair!

I disagree with this sentiment, depending on where you live not commuting for a few weeks has already paid for all these things. And for many who haven't had to pay rent in the Bay Area for the last 6 months the gains are even more pronounced.

>Spend more time working since there is no psychological difference between relax and work time?

I agree that's an issue but can certainly be mitigated by building good habits around "work" and "not work" time.

chrisjarvis··on Netflix boss: Remote working has negative effects
a large amount of this is taxed away. California's top tax bracket is an additional 13.3% per year. High cost of living here also. Although I generally agree with your sentiment, it may not work out to as much money as you think in the end.
chrisjarvis··on Desolate English path has killed more than 100 people (2017)
that is both interesting and terrifying. thanks for sharing. Hopefully someday a documentary crew finds a way to explore the underneath part.
chrisjarvis··on Bardcore
that second song is dope. in regards to the genre of pirate metal this is my understanding to be one of the more popular bands (and a very fun song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f55CqLc6IR0
chrisjarvis··on Bardcore
related and similarly fun is the rather esoteric genre of "wizard disco". https://bandcamp.com/tag/wizard-disco
chrisjarvis··on Half of Americans fear a health-related bankruptcy
https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html

>The prevalence of obesity was 42.4% in 2017~2018

This is one chronic illness (mostly unique to America in the developed world) that makes socialized health care very expensive.

no, never did, not a bad idea when learning about a new technology haha
chrisjarvis··on Bella Thorne, OnlyFans and the battle over monetising content
being a professional athlete doesn't take hard work? just because you and I may not have the innate natural talent to play in the NFL doesn't negate the fact that everyone there has dedicated their lives to training. I don't waste my time watching sports and I hate most celebrities but comparing professional athletes and acting at the highest levels to posting a picture of your butthole online is ridiculous.
chrisjarvis··on # of days since the last alg=none JWT vulnerability
> The other big mistake I've seen is encoding personal data in the token, instead of just an ID that only has meaning inside of your database. It turns out not everyone is aware that JWT tokens are publicly decodable and that the only security is in the signing + verification. Many people I've spoke with think the token is like a hash.

I have been working as a software engineer professionally for 3 years (the entire time with web technologies) and I learned this like 4 months ago... I think there needs to be more awareness of this.
