chrisandchris··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch

Sometimes we bring down whole services with "just" config (looking at you, DNS).

chrisandchris··on The Four Horsemen of Agentic Coding
> No, everything that can be automated SHOULD be automated,

I disagree, because then the "human" part of our days are over. If everything is automated, I don't need to interact with any human at all anymore - but the random small chat in the Bakery every couple of days is very nice. Ther will also be no chance to break out of the loop. Try to get a human involved if the automated system thinks "naa, not today", that's going to be difficult because companies prove they will fire the human as fast as possible because the task seemingly is fully automated.

> I imagine something similar happened to tailors who became factory sweatshop workers.

I'm really wondering where this goes. I'm not sure we are going to the "tailors", but maybe I'm also biased.

Tailoring completly got lost - there are basically none* in western europe (* if you don't count the couple of shops that adjust your clothes a little - try to find clothes Made in Europe). So are we going out-of-business and our code is coming from (name a country)?

Or are we going to exist, but it's all Fortune 500 and smaller shops have no chance of establishing themselves anymore?

Or is it going to be totally different and small shops will flourish and the Fortune 500 will loose part of the market?

chrisandchris··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
> Brute forcing every move, no matter how stupid, is a great strategy if you have the resources to do it.

It may be, but it's IMHO also not worth writing a blog post about it. what's Next coming up? How I broke into a house by trying every door in New York?

If most of the work is only possible due to unlimited resources, it's not really a great invention, and it probably would have been cheaper to hire a (human) mole.

chrisandchris··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
I did a comparison with an LLM of my choice and there was no meaningful difference (or nothing I would consider HN-worthy).
chrisandchris··on I don't like passkeys
Untrustworthy... yes.

I get more annoyed by the timeout it adds. Logging in 10 years ago? A thing of seconds.

Logging in today? Either magic links through mail (delivered to you within the next 30min thanks to graylisting or spam filters) or a login flow with requires 5 dialogs and 5 confirmation of "no, just log me in".

chrisandchris··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md
We have a CLAUDE.md file whose only content is "please read .agents/agents.md"
chrisandchris··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
Or just developer/mansgement slop? I don't understand why every app needs to be updated every second day (at least it feels like that).

The easiest way to count how many apps you have is to turn off automated updates and wait a week. The number of updates equals the number of apps.

chrisandchris··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
> accumulator

I had similar trouble, but I know call the "accumulator" just "previous" which makes it more logical in my head:

.reduce( (previous, current) => previous+current, 0 );

chrisandchris··on Every invoice in Brazil's economy runs on SOAP 1.2
> So, first up: why? Why is everything still using SOAP?

That‘s the question? And not why every single invoice has to go through the government?

I would call that developers loss of focus.

chrisandchris··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
> Sorry, I meant revenues. If Nvidia's revenues stay stable,

But aren‘t they currently sitting on like a margin of over 80%? So I assume their revenue will fall, because people are not going to like that in the long-term.

chrisandchris··on I refuse to let SPICE die
People who work with virtualization on Linux will (hopefully) all know what SPICE is.

Edit: typo

chrisandchris··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
I tried to remove a not-anoymore-existing company I had a business profile before from Google Maps. I was close to giving up, it's such a complicated process that is fully intransparent.

Kudos for you for trying 4 times.

chrisandchris··on How to compromise your system with a job interview
So if you hire a plumber as a plumbing company you expect him to have plumbing-material available and to do plumbing in his free-time?

There are people that do like not to do work in their free time.

chrisandchris··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
Looks pretty cool!

P.S.: With AdBlockers enabled I cannot navigate on your site at all on Safari mobile. Seems like your navigation uses to much JS to provide a link.

chrisandchris··on Curl: Nobody Wants to Work with Windows
Isn't Invoke-WebRequest the one that makes it really hard to have an exit code != 0 if your request fails?
chrisandchris··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Functionality isn't everything. A human teller has the (more or less) same functionality as online banking, but I do love me some online banking.

I also like the weather icons being 4K and having some smooth anmiations.

Not to say that it's gone worse (it has IMHO) but comparing 25 years ago to know doesn't help much. Times were different back then. That's like comparing 1900 travel to today.

chrisandchris··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Looks really nice! Two things:

- Does it support layers / assembling structures? This would allow to combine multiple parts into a product (don't know hoe that is named exactly in english) - Awesome you support not only subscriptions but also a credit-based approach. I would definetly be a credit-customer, as I may have usage a couple of times a year, bot not continouous!

chrisandchris··on Welcoming the Nepalese Government to Have I Been Pwned
Someone said services like Twitter, FB or Instagram are walled gardens. Cloudflare said "Hold my beer".

I am annoyed by bots, but I am even more annoyed by the internet being less open and less accessible every day.

chrisandchris··on Web Security is Too Hard
Which you could mitigate by using a Cert-Policy in DNS and HTST, so an attacker might not get s valid certificate for your domain and at least access is sonewhat restricted.
chrisandchris··on RFC 10015: Deprecating Obsolete Key Exchange Methods in TLS 1.2 and DTLS 1.2
Or, just imagine that there are places in this world that still run old and outdated versions of something and upgrading is not an option because of "there's no money". We should not exclude all these places from all the internet just because of reasons.
chrisandchris··on Nano Banana 2 removed from Google Earth
What I find interesting - and seems absolutely logic for such a large company - that it's fine for a group of people to work on something tha is clearly to fail from Day 1, and it just seems to be ok.
chrisandchris··on Open-weight AI is having its Kubernetes moment
> Its 2026 and its the de facto method of deploying software basically everywhere.

That is some really impressive bubble you are living within. Basically everywhere - nowhere near that, no.

[edit]: Maybe containers, but software in general is so much more broad than containers.

chrisandchris··on Ah, the Codeberg Drama
> I notice that both PRs were filed after the assembly and after the ballots went out

At least in Switzerland, you can not vote (well, you can but it does not have any effect) on things that are not mentioned within the agenda published and sent to members with the invitation. So IMHO these votes will not have any effect itself, just serve as an "indication".

IANAL.

chrisandchris··on AI bet goes awry: Oracle fires 21,000 employees
Didn't know they had 20k developers. I thought Oracle is just lawyers. Or did they replace lawyers with AI?

chrisandchris··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
> [...] people think they must only have one.

That's the real failure? I think the real failure is that people must have _more than one_. I thought so hard to add all my credentials to 1Password. Now people tell me I should use a Yubikey (or better two or three of them). What do you think, I'm going to register a couple of hundred accounts times three for something I already have (my password manager)?

The real advante in passkeys is in allowing me to log in into a service on a foreign device without typing [my password], which is (honestly) something now sane person should ever do.
