chrisa··on Ask HN: Remote workers in a non-tech city, what's your experience?
:) remote meetups then...

but even still - there's probably at least ONE other tech person in your area. It may be difficult to find them, but it's worth it (for sure) to get a community going.

This isn't like online communities where you need 1,000 people before it's interesting. Even just 3 people can make a very interesting local community

chrisa··on Ask HN: Remote workers in a non-tech city, what's your experience?
There's almost certainly other developers in your city - even if you're in the middle of nowhere :)

Check out local meetups especially, and you'll probably find a smaller, but interesting group of developers you can connect with.

chrisa··on Tether price manipulation
Do you know if the public will actually find out any info on Jan 15th, or will that all be private, sealed documents? (I'm a bit lost at how that process is going to work)
chrisa··on Tether price manipulation
I agree that a Tether reckoning is coming, but point #10 of that thread is the most important: it could be weeks, months or _years_ before it's fully corrected, so be super super super careful about using Tether as a reason to short Bitcoin...

"The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent"

chrisa··on Ask HN: How do you build your audience?
I definitely have the feeling that I'd like to talk about many things! It can be hard to work through :)

I'd say my one topic is actually: "teaching web developers". I happen to talk a lot about React, but I also talk about JS in general, and Rails sometimes too.

That seems to be fine - your topic CAN be something very specific like "React performance improvements", and you'll do well, or it can be something like "How to be a more effective web developer", and that will be ok too - just don't switch between topics like web development, then cooking, then politics, then your dog, then a little more web development, etc.

Sharing some of your life (like your dog, hobbies, etc) is good and is part of you being a "real person", as long as say, 90% of your content follows your major topic.

chrisa··on Ask HN: How do you build your audience?
"Be helpful on the internet"

People will follow you if you are saying things that actually help them. The most effective way is probably teaching something, although sharing your "behind the scenes" story can work as well.

0-10: Start with friends. If you're on twitter for example, following your friends will get you your first few follow-backs

10-50: decide what you're going to be "about". Don't tweet/post about everything - pick ONE or TWO major topics, and just post about those, with the goal of _helping_ people. Share your knowledge. Then, start replying with helpful posts to other big names.

50-100: same as 10-50. Make sure your bio is hyper focused on your one or two topics, and that you post consistently, and with posts that provide a ton of value. Answer people's questions in public.

How I did it:

exactly the same as above until about 500 followers on twitter. Then I had a _giant_ follow event with the twitter thread "Learn React in 10 Tweets": https://twitter.com/chrisachard/status/1175022111758442497

After that (and gaining several hundred followers in a day, then several thousand in a few more days), it became easier to get engagement on posts. Continue to be helpful to people, and people will continue to follow.

I wrote about the process here too: https://chrisachard.com/triple-your-twitter-following

Down for me too - it's a great time to check out an alternative! :) https://async.dev

(I'm the founder/builder of async - happy to answer any questions if you're interested!)

chrisa··on Turn any camera into a webcam with a $13 USB/HDMI video card
If anyone does this but finds their camera turns off after 30 minutes (and if you can't fix it by updating the firmware or changing settings), try this:

connect your camera via hdmi AND usb, then:

> brew install gphoto2

> gphoto2 --summary

You'll know it worked if you see your camera make/model show up.

That one --summary call is all that's needed for my Canon m50 to stay awake forever! I'm not sure if it works for other models, but when I figured that out I was super happy :)

chrisa··on ‘YouTube recommendations are toxic,’ says dev who worked on the algorithm (2019)
Giant tip: look at https://www.youtube.com/feed/history and remove any videos you don't want included for recommendations - it really helps clean up your suggested videos.

Doing that, combined with liberally using incognito mode for one-off video watching, helps keeps suggestions actually reasonable.

chrisa··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
If you're using it powered all the time, have you checked out the existing plug in "fake battery" options? Here's one example: https://www.amazon.com/Glorich-Replacement-Adapter-Cameras-F...

chrisa··on Ask HN: Which books have you read more than once?
Fiction: The Inimitable Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse

Non-fiction: The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

chrisa··on Fitful nightly sleep linked to chronic inflammation, hardened arteries
Not sure about the asthma, but frequent urination at night can be a warning sign for diabetes; if you haven't had a blood sugar test lately, you may want to ask your doctor about one.

Hoping you can find a solution!

chrisa··on How to write a programming book
You can't actually send a tweet at the push of a button (unless you're connected with twitter oauth with the right permissions), but what you can do (and that button does) is opens the tweet composer pre-filled with the quote, ready for you to then just hit "Tweet"

chrisa··on WeWork sells Meetup

chrisa··on WeWork sells Meetup
Hm, I see how I should reword that a bit - what I mean is that there are additional instructions about specifically how to go into meetup and export your list (from meetup) next to the button where you can import it into MeetingPlace. There's nothing special or secret about those instructions - but I can see how it looks like there's something hidden... not my intention!

The main reason it's not directly in the FAQ is because it's about a page of pretty specific details - not great for being directly in a FAQ. I could see putting a link to it from there though.

For export from MeetingPlace: as an organizer, you have the ability to export your member list. Each member has an individual setting to let you see their email address or not. So if all the members let you see their email addresses, then you'll be able to export them all.

That's the most fair way I could think to do it: allow the members to decide if the organizer can see their email or not.

chrisa··on WeWork sells Meetup
Yeah, that's high on my list after talking with other organizers like yourself.

Currently I have plans to give organizers tools to track no-shows, as well as the ability to "check in" people.

Do you have specific ideas about what would have been most helpful to you as an organizer?

chrisa··on WeWork sells Meetup
If anyone here is a Meetup organizer looking for an alternative - I'm building one!

It already has > 100 live groups around the world, and all the basic features work.

I'm adding a bunch of new features all the time, including virtual events and (soon) remote groups (super important given what's happening):

Happy to answer any questions!

chrisa··on Meetup Spins Off from WeWork
The 2.5 years is how long Meetup has been owned by WeWork.

So I believe the sale/spinoff is right away, and that comment in the article is just how long they happened to be apart of WeWork

chrisa··on Grab your crayons, it’s coloring time
I've worked on this a bit! It turns out to be quite difficult (at least it was for me)

One of the big problems is that GANs can't generate files at a high enough resolution to make great coloring pages.

I then tried to make a neural network that would generate SVGs directly, which turns out to be really tricky too.

One thing that might work is to generate low resolution pages with a GAN, and then use an image to svg converter to make high resolution versions... maybe I'll try that next :)

chrisa··on Grab your crayons, it’s coloring time
I just tried it with Procreate - the files are PDFs, so they can't be brought into procreate like that, so I had to download on my desktop, convert the PDF to an image, then transfer it to the ipad and insert it into Procreate that way.

Hope that helps!

chrisa··on Ask HN: Books giving practical advice on starting a solo SaaS business?
I remember it being really good, though I haven't read it for awhile. I thought I remembered hearing a podcast where Rob talked about what he would change if he rewrote it today, but I can't seem to find it (maybe someone with better google-fu can)

Here is one of his podcast episodes where he talks about it though - so you can start here: https://www.startupsfortherestofus.com/episodes/episode-219

chrisa··on Ask HN: Books giving practical advice on starting a solo SaaS business?
“Start small, stay small” is good (but a bit old)

Definitely check out Indie Hackers though! The whole community and podcast is built around that idea.

chrisa··on Coronavirus: NHS unveils 'data platform' to track beds, staff and ventilators
Well - that software will hopefully solve the problem of data being spread across 15 different systems (although to some extent, now you've just added another system in the mix :) )

To start solving the problem of equipment being swapped or walking off, that's when you need to look at an active RFID or other real time tracking solution.

chrisa··on Coronavirus: NHS unveils 'data platform' to track beds, staff and ventilators
I worked for a startup that tracked hospital equipment (with active RFID tags), and it was shocking how disorganized hospitals can be. It's not usually a single person or department's fault though - there are a bunch of factors:

- equipment is often managed by a small team who doesn't have the resources to really track down everything

- equipment gets distributed to different departments who then might move it, store it, swap it, it breaks down and they don't tell anyone, etc

- theft can be a big issue: equipment is often very expensive and not very large, which means it has the ability to "walk off"

- different departments (or individuals) might hoard equipment because it can be difficult to get what you need exactly when you need it

- data about what you have can be split across 15 different systems that don't have the ability to talk or reconcile

- "full" real time tracking (like what we made) can be very expensive

So yes - there are systems that can help, but they're expensive and often not a first priority (even though they can help tremendously, especially when it comes time to do maintenance and reordering, etc.)

chrisa··on New research shows social distancing a must to beat Covid-19
One of the doctors on one of the press conferences (sorry, can't remember which one), said that she would prefer the term "physical distancing" as well for the same reason.

She said that "social distancing" is a medical technical term that doesn't translate super well to the public.

chrisa··on 3D printed door handle developed in effort to reduce spread of Coronavirus
It appears that COVID-19 lasts for about 4 hours on copper. So better than other surfaces, but it does still live for a while
