chris1993··on The human tendency to over-water plants
A lot of seeds don’t need frequent watering to germinate. One heavy water to start and then keep it damp, not wet. If the ground is too cold many seeds will just rot. Seed trays make it easier to manage the temperature and water. Beans in particular like one watering when planted and no more until they germinate.
chris1993··on The human tendency to over-water plants
A handy tip I got from a citrus grower is to feel the leaf. If it feels cool the plant is transpiring and has enough water, otherwise give it a bit of water. Too much water and too little water both can look the same and plants wilt.

chris1993··on Show HN: Tara 2.0 – Fast Jira alternative with automation based on Git events
I looked but can't see in the FAQ or anywhere - do you provide a way to migrate from Jira and do you integrate with bitbucket?

Why is it desirable to track the kids backpacks? Are they so very untidy that they often get lost?

The technical term was 'geriatric primagravida' for us with a first child at 32! It felt quite insulting at the time.

Mostly this seems to revolve around 'eat less', which is a challenge for many people.
chris1993··on Windows Package Manager 1.0
Yes, Windows Terminal allowed me to retire putty. Proper font support and tabs beat out the putty scroll buffer advantages.

It was named 'chinese gooseberry' until Hort NZ rebranded it but they are unrelated botanically (European gooseberry is Ribes uva-crispa, Kiwifruit is Actinidia deliciosa).
chris1993··on Home Gardening
Best to use certified seed potatoes so you don't introduce virus problems for anyone else growing potatoes in the area.
chris1993··on Dark Matter: The Situation Has Changed
In the comments why does everyone refer to the author as ‘Sabine’? It seems overly familiar and derisory. Men are granted the respectful use of their full name or their surnames.
chris1993··on Lice
They’re pretty common in Australia and have evolved resistance to many chemical treatments, to the extent that the recommended treatment is combing with conditioner, but you only need one or two eggs to be missed to restart the cycle. Plus kids often don’t notice they have lice until they have a lot of lice, so the touching heads together which happens a lot with smaller kids spreads lice fast across a group. Basically they are really hard to completely eradicate.
chris1993··on Who Owns England’s Woods? (2020)
Australia has the same approach to selling off monopolies. Nice little earners.
chris1993··on Mouse plague grows to biblical proportions across eastern Australia
No, they're trying to eliminate feral cats in the bush and outback areas where they are driving native animal populations to extinction. The mouse problem is in grain farming areas and is cyclical.

Essentially a Chromebook
chris1993··on Primary energy vs final energy: why replacing fossil fuels may not be so hard
When has Australia ever experienced these rolling blackouts across states due to solar? The most recent substantial blackouts (2019 in victoria) were due to extreme heat causing the power stations to be unable to meet demand, plus some stations being offline [0]. This is totally unrelated to the uptake of solar which ameliorates peak demand for aircon power. [0] https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-01-26/victorian-blackouts-w...

chris1993··on Ask HN: Why are we receiving thousands of fake users?
We have seen something similar. Thousands of installs and immediate refunds in African countries far exceeding the number of 'real' installs. We contacted Google support but they just said everything is working as expected.
chris1993··on How does a gas pump know to shut itself off? (1981)
Except some independents still have the latch which means you can fill and wash your windows at the same time.

BNW == brave new world?
chris1993··on Smoke has caused temperature forecasts to go crazy
Be sure to have a bypass on your rain system to flush the smoke precipitates off your roof before they get into the tank. My parents water used to taste of tar over winter when they were lighting their fire.
chris1993··on Response to Google open letter
A recent case established that Australian news organisations are legally liable and may sued for defamatory comments posted against their stories on social media platforms
chris1993··on No net insect abundance and diversity declines across US
You might have been inadvertantly measuring how white dots make beetles more susceptible to predation.
chris1993··on Australia to make Facebook, Google pay for news
This is probably driven by a precedent set recently in Australia where media organisations were found to be legally responsible for any defamatory comments on their stories in Facebook.

chris1993··on The evidence which suggests that Covid-19 is not a naturally evolved virus [pdf]
There's no accepted definition of intelligence so how could he be correct [0]? He's using a culturally defined comparison which unsurprisingly places him on the winning side. If you make comparisons on the basis of race (which is a social construct[1]) where the result demonstrates "racial superiority" then it is racist.

It's social and cultural influences all the way down.
