chris1993··on An update on recent Claude Code quality reports
So this explains why resuming a session after a 5-hour timeout basically eats most of the next session. How then to avoid this?
chris1993··on Renewables reached nearly 50% of global electricity capacity last year
As is the case in Australia. We personally pay around AU$2/day grid connect fee
chris1993··on AI is making junior devs useless
Similarly, I started using Claude to add some features to an native app on iOS and Android in early January. That was so successful (tooks days instead of weeks) I started applying it to client work and basically haven't written any substantial code since. A big change from around 40 years of writing code pretty much every day and I'm enjoying the increased velocity from not having to web search for API and CSS syntax details.

My son, working in another dev company, reports the same - he basically hasn't written much actual code for about three months. It's a massive change.

chris1993··on Show HN: I rewrote my Mac Electron app in Rust
I didn't see 'highlighting on wrong line', but double-click a word not selecting the word is annoying (Firefox on Windows11)
chris1993··on So Much Blood
The term for slaughtering pigs around here is 'turning them off' - all attempts to disconnect from the reality of what is happening.
chris1993··on Why Is the Kiwi's Egg So Big?
Moa seemed to contradict this
chris1993··on New Study: Waymo is reducing serious crashes and making streets safer
It’s an issue for everyone not in a car
chris1993··on Zoom outage caused by accidental 'shutting down' of the zoom.us domain
Māori were the first settlers of NZ. There’s no record of any earlier population being “dinner” for anyone.
chris1993··on How Airbnb measures listing lifetime value
Airbnb hosts are penalised if they cancel - they get downrated - so it's not something that hosts generally want to do. Far better if they can persuade a guest to cancel
chris1993··on Stockpile 72 hours of supplies in case of disaster or attack, EU tells citizens
we keep bread in the freezer. eggs are fine at room temperature for a few weeks if they have never been chilled.
chris1993··on Where is London's most central sheep?
For NSW it’s time to dead kangaroo on the roadside
chris1993··on Post World War II Food
It was one of my grandfather’s (WWII veteran) favourite foods, a taste acquired in his army days.
chris1993··on Microsoft blocks Windows 11 workaround that enabled local accounts
Thunderbird is great until you receive Teams invites. It removes/hides the links in the calendar entry so you need to keep the email in order to be able to click on the meeting link.
chris1993··on Repairing my mug with Kintsugi
The BBC “repair shop” show recently (last year?) had an episode repairing a shattered vase with some specialist glass repair glue, so you can probably find some for this.
chris1993··on Windows Recall sounds like a privacy nightmare
They don't seem to have considered domestic abuse situations where this makes everything visible to the abusive partner.
chris1993··on Roll-to-roll fabricated perovskite solar cells under ambient room conditions
Attaching to the roof requires screwing fasteners through the metal in fairly arbitrary positions based on the underlying framing. It’s not going to be easy to have electric connections.
chris1993··on We've Been Treating Concussions All Wrong
If you weren't ok you would black out so really best to get checked at a hospital.
chris1993··on NYC-bound flight canceled when passenger notices missing bolts on plane wing
I think a number of people noticed (including the cabin crew) but nobody said anything. I guess we assumed the flight crew knew what was going on, but no, that was not the case. This was a Qantas regional flight Sydney-Armidale
chris1993··on NYC-bound flight canceled when passenger notices missing bolts on plane wing
This was on a Dash-8 and I was a passenger seated beside the wing. The aircraft shook when the tyre burst and the cabin crew looked concerned but nobody did anything. Eventually, an hour into the flight, one of the flight crew came back with a torch (it was nighttime) to look at the window at the landing gear.
chris1993··on NYC-bound flight canceled when passenger notices missing bolts on plane wing
I certainly regret not reporting a burst tyre while taxiing to depart as we ended up diverted to an emergency landing with all the passengers in brace position. No real harm done but stressful for everyone.
chris1993··on Amazon Disables iOS Kindle App
Definitely a bug. Deregistering the device resolves the issue. Discussed on reddit and apple forums.

chris1993··on Open and portable Postgres-as-a-service. Also available on Hetzner
The source is available (https://github.com/ubicloud/ubicloud) and the license says it's free to use so long as you don't use it to run a hosted service. It looks fairly 'open'?
chris1993··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
I wrote my own version of the quickbooks pro timer app since the old one doesn't work on modern windows but I need it to track time to bill clients and I didn't want to use one of the subscription-based timers. Wrote it in Avalon so it works on PC and MacOS.

I wrote https://gardenate.com for my own use so I could get reminders for when to plant vegetables - it's expanded a bit since then.

chris1993··on 'Safe' alternatives to engineered stone bench tops may not be so safe: study
The motivation is the large number of workers contracting silicosis
chris1993··on UK's infrastructure is too expensive: Railways, Trams, and Roads all cost more
Does Germany not have laws restricting sale of alcohol to drunk people?
chris1993··on Emerging Tick Bite-Associated Meat Allergy Potentially Affects Thousands
It's comparatively minor - tingling hands and flushed face but have been warned it can escalate to anaphalaxis at any time. We were told by a specialist that it can return to normal over time. Main problem is wife keeps getting more tick bites so it won't stop while that happens.
chris1993··on Emerging Tick Bite-Associated Meat Allergy Potentially Affects Thousands
It’s increasingly common in Australia but we only learned of it after my wife contracted alpha-gal from a tick bite. It really needs more publicity.
chris1993··on ‘The best blueberry’: how a tiny North American fruit took over Australia (2022)
They grow warm-climate blueberry varieties commercially in this sub-tropical coastal region (Coffs Harbour). No frost. The ones in my garden fruit quite happily.
chris1993··on Oregon County Sues BP, Chevron, Shell, Exxon for $51B Climate Damages
It shows a warming trend. https://climatefeedback.org/claimreview/claim-of-no-us-warmi...
chris1993··on Tackling plastic pollution: ‘We can't recycle our way out of this’
They don't go in the rubbish as they are completely recyclable
