chowes··on Show HN: Grumbles.js – Detects when your users swear out loud
Tinfoil hat aside, I kinda like this.

We work with a decent number of older, non technical people, and our product team would love to be a fly on the wall to hear where they're frustrated in the product. Obviously due to security concerns we could never implement something like this, but in a perfect world this would be a killer feature.

chowes··on Higher-kinded types: the difference between giving up and moving forward
Keeping your comment in mind while reading http://www.sparxeng.com/blog/software/an-example-of-what-hig... from below was super helpful. Thank you.
chowes··on Higher-kinded types: the difference between giving up and moving forward
That first blog post of yours was great, FYI - exactly what I was looking for.

What I wish to see in these blog posts are real-world examples. My day job is coding an MVC app in Rails / Ember. Fine, I won't be able to get past Chapter 11 in a book, but what am I REALLY missing out on? Are these solutions meant for a different problem set, or would I be able to use these concepts in my day-to-day (assuming we were written in a Scala, Haskell, etc.)?

It's probably unfair to compare bugs to bugs, since with a typed language, your compiler and editor caught many "bugs" before they even hit your application.
chowes··on Code Like a Girl: Harassment of Our Authors Is Not OK
I think you're severely missing the point of the article if you think the messages she was getting boil down to "older people trying to talk to young people"

I think the main benefit comes from being able to build tools to transform, refactor, etc. your code in very little effort.

Same. And I also do this with distros, window managers, etc. I find myself bouncing back and forth between convenience and simplicity - the grass is always greener.
chowes··on Ask HN: Any advice for switching from self-employment back to employee?
See if you can transition into full time with one of your current clients. Having that trust already built really helps (along with not having to deal with the interview process).

You should be able to check your past financial expenses, and don't be afraid to get as much detail as you need to get a real apples-to-apples comparison. You can potentially negotiate your way into all-cash compensation, especially since you're likely wanting to continue to manage your investments manually.

As far as whether or not it's "the right time" - that's totally your call.

Am I the only one that read the FAQ half-expecting to see some crowdsourced data mining / AI training piece along with this? Perhaps because it was released by Google and had the word "project" in the title.

chowes··on How to Earn a Technical Co-Founder
I think this is a great response. There are so many ways to validate your idea via low-"tech" solutions without building out an app.

Your value proposition is not "an app that provides X". It should be the X. Technology is just the vessel.

chowes··on How to Earn a Technical Co-Founder
> Go spend some money on offshore coders and get a prototype built.

But please, PLEASE know that that is a prototype and that your technical cofounder will likely want to throw it out the door on day 1.

Nothing is a worse conversation than "okay, so I have the v0 built offshore, but it just needs X, Y, and Z". Great start, but let me pick the stack, framework, etc. so I can do my job quickly. I'm here to make decisions WITH you, not be your code monkey.

chowes··on Node.js v6.0 Released

chowes··on The average size of Web pages is now the average size of a Doom install
Wondering if an idea like this would work:

Bundlers like Webpack already import JS in a modular structure. I'm wondering if we could do some profiling into popular npm module combinations (I know many people using React + Lodash + Redux Router, etc), bundle them up, and have Webpack load in those combos from a CDN via <script>?

Now this would probably require some work on webpack's end (the __webpack_require__(n) would have to be some sort of consistent hash), but at least everyone who blindly require('lodash') will see an improvement?
