choot··on As women have more equal opportunity, the more their preferences differ from men
> That's what spun me out when I first traveled in Asia. Backpacking through Thailand there was (as far as I could see) pretty equal representation in almost all different job roles, from street vendors to travel agents to IT. (Come to think of it, tuk-tuk drivers and taxi drivers were universally male, though...)

Prostitution is not punished in Thailand and it's cheaply available. Maybe that's why males don't bother harassing women?

choot··on [dead]
It seems you got downvoted. But there is heavy sensoring attempt behind these. IDK why, people are not willing to talk?

> You’ll need to back this up with numbers.

I agree, this space needs to be opened up for more research.

>I know plenty of successful women who didn’t sleep their way to the top, and plenty of successful men who didn’t either.

Do you think people can lie to not playdown their success? Or to make you believe they deserve it.

It might be selection bias but i agree we need real numbers here.

But opening up a discussion is better to find measures to crack down on sexual harassment.

> This implies women aren't capable of earning success in any way other than trading sexual favors.

No i never implied this. If there is shortcut to top vs 5 additional years of efforts and access to elite club. What do you choose?

>The "ghosting" and filming comments are very odd by the way. Do you mean women are always ghosted after sex?

You misunderstood my point.

If someone refuses to trade sexual favours, they often face retaliation and are ghosted (their presence/efforts are not acknowledged). They get no rewards for their sincere efforts.

>And that men are worried random Tinder hookups are going to record them?

I am not accusing women of recording them. I am saying that executives don't record victim while having sex. So there is no risk of losing reputation for victim as executive has lot more reputation to lose.

No i am painting no one as manipulator. I am explaining the reward/risk dynamics of sexual harassment.

I am pyscologist, I've consulted enough clients before reaching this conclusion.

If you go asking women, if they'll sleep with you for promotion. Answer will be a big NO.

Consider asking them who already faced this in real life, what did they choose?

I want companies to tackle these dynamics, so we've a much safer and fair playground for everyone.

One of my friend working for a big tech once told me, if you go back in time, you'll see powerful men had many women. Why do you think at Google it will be any different? Being one of the most powerful organizations, it attracts power hungry people. Not only those who want money and fame, but those who want others to submit to them and make others do whatever they want. Cleary such people see sexual harassment in similar way as coercing a small startup to be acquired or be demolished. Some speculated, efforts to increase diversity is to get executives access to more women.

Half of the women when given a choice between being ghosted or being promoted at a company, will choose to sleep with you in return of promotion/soft cornering etc...(as most of them are liberal and it happens behind the scenes anyways, sex is no longer taboo, Tinder hookup culture is very popular and accepted). Everyone will see your new Tesla and Instagram lifestyle but who will ask who you had slept with to afford this new car and lifestyle? No wonder, executives know this. Very few victims (most don't see themselves as victim but as hackers who gamed the system and ended up with more return) actually retaliate. Most are imposters, who don't believe they are good for anything. So they welcome any favour coming their way.

Executives aren't crazy to film while having sex as some other crazy hookup culture people who you might find on Tinder. Sleeping with them is relatively safe and more rewarding. They've reputation to lose and skin in the game.

Those executives probably slept with 100 employees before they got busted. Surely, they feel it was worth it.

I am simply outlining how the thing works so that people can fix the incentives around this and come up with a better system to fight sexual harassment.

Please don't fight strawman by downvoting because reading this hurts your feelings. Contest point by point, what is your company doing to avoid situations like these?

choot··on Why Pencils Are Yellow (2017)
I thought this is because School busss color is Yellow so everything yellow identifies things which has to do with students.
choot··on Satellite images expose China's vast network of secret re-education camps
I've racist theory, i appologize if it's offensive and wrong:

I think Beijing is running into problem in this region due to presence of higher proportion Caucasian DNA who are not conformist like Asians and Beijing is terrified, why the things which work on majority of their Han Chinese population doesn't work here? Why can't they see the benefit of our system? Are these dillusional enough to not see their own gain?

choot··on Clojure at Netflix (2013) [slides]
One strategy which i learnt from a tech company executive is that if you want to hire best of best at low cost, develop products in interesting new programming languages as the most curious programmers who are very serious about programming care less about money and more about work in a particular language of their interest.

No wonder the company had successful projects in every asoteric languages.

Now, I come from executive background in corporate job where going with anything other than Java is considered risky. This came off as suprise to me.

choot··on How to Catch When Proxies Lie [pdf]
They missed one which is used by lots of ad networks including Google and Facebook: digital element's ip location DB.
choot··on Cardiff tech firm: 'We'll pay £100k, but can't get staff'
I wonder if training works for developers.

I've never seen any company offering developer training, so i assumed training developers doesn't work.

choot··on Generating custom photo-realistic faces using AI
I am looking for a way to generate photos of me after plastic surgery.

The AI should generate a face which will be most beautiful and trusted in all cultures.

It will be using my present face and morph things from there according to the limitations.

Using least incisions in least risky areas of face.

After that we get a surgeon to do perform plastic surgery as per this AI.

I am looking for ideas on how to accomplish it.

choot··on YouTube CEO says EU regulation will be bad for creators
The best way to benefit from a pie isn't to turn the plate upside down but to make and take a cut for yourself.

Afaik, this is just a way to reduce profitability of YouTube, which YouTube will be cunningly passing down to the creators and advertisers.

choot··on Germany urges global minimum tax for digital tech giants
Auto manufacturing seems to have more bad affect on environment which in turn has bad effect on Humans. You'll need to provide infra and healthcare to deal with those issues.

Should tech companies be really taxed differently when most of them have very minute fingerprint on nature and humans?

choot··on Ask HN: Founders, what is the worst experience you had with developers?
1. Undocumented server setups with passwords saved in their own password manager and refusing to hand passwords and proccess after being fired.

2. Hacking the servers after being fired and deleting the data

3. Insulting the guy from the marketing/sales/customer service department for lack of technical knowledge.

4. Asking the woman from the customer service department to be a cheerleader to up his motivation while he fixed the customer's problem.

choot··on Not exercising worse than smoking, diabetes and heart disease study finds
I wonder what if those who were not performing exercises were already not well in some ways which compelled them to not exercise in the first place.
choot··on Ask HN: First month job anxiety. Am I actually an impostor?
Once i was at the same place. When i fixed my health issues (which i was unware of), i made good progress with my team. Let me skip the job part.

I didn't even know that i could feel better than what i was feeling at that time. How do you know that you've got an issue when you don't know that something better exists.

How is your health? Do you get sufficient sunlight (vitamin D?

How much body fat % do you've? What's your BMI?

Sometimes anexity is a singnal of something wrong going with our health.

About the job, if you've skills and you are healthy and motivated, you'll do a good job. No need to stress yourself.

If your performance is not optimum for the job you got, don't try too hard, you'll burn out. Be mindful, plan things and see where they take you. Maybe they'll fire you one day then you'll end up in other company.

Once i was at the same place. Once i fixed my health issues (which i was unware of), i made good progress with my team.

choot··on Microplastics found in 90 percent of table salt
I use Himalayan Pink rock salt. It comes from Punjab. I wonder if it's affected too.
choot··on Do We Worship Complexity?
One of my friend who was not so strong in programming was never short of any jobs that were available to him.

He told me he took a ukulele to the interview. Each time when interviewer asked him a question, he would play ukulele untill he found the answer.

He got the job even when his interviews went wrong.

His job offer arrived months after an interview because he was the only guy who the interviewer could remember.

Often you hire for a spot in a company, after sometime that person leaves and management asks you to name any other person and when you try to recall last interviewee batch, the ukulele guy is only one the interviewer is able to remember.

choot··on The high-risk, high-reward world of selling random stuff on Amazon
Lately, i use shopify and private label the stuff from China.

I sell exclusively through Facebook ads.

Around 20K per month revenue with 70% margin.

This is in UK only. I've no idea how to move product to the US and sell there.

I've not found any company which can take my products from UK and store it in a wharehouse in the US then dispatch them to address i specify.

Lemme know if you know about any such company.

choot··on How Bad Is It to Forget Someone's Name?
Damn these kind of problem are best solved by augmented reality glasses with face detection or simply some QR code scanner which scans other's glass. Name can be made public yeaa

choot··on EU drops rule that would prevent self-driving car data from being copyrighted
I wonder how this will help EU people.

This decision doesn't seem pro consumer.

Maybe automakers control EU and it's a way to secure their future cash cow.

choot··on Brief aerobic exercise immediately enhances attention and perceptual speed
I used to cover 4 km in 5-10 minutes to school everyday on my moutain bike. Used to leave exactly at 6:55 when school starts at 7:05.

If I went slow, I would have definitely missed the class, this forced me to ride as fast as I could.

It definitely enhanced my cognitive skills.

choot··on Don't shoot, I'm disabled
One reason could be - anabolic steroid use.

Most people after a specific age find it incredibly very difficult to maintain a physique of low body fat/no belly and muscles along with a stressful job and les hours available to yourself.

They end up using steroid. There is something called RoidRage. Once my best friend nearly beat me up badly, i figured all his muscular appearance with low body fat was owned to steroids.

choot··on Ask HN: Is it okay to disclose your co-founder's incompetence to your employer?
How about:

"We split the tasks among ourselves keeping in mind our strengths, but unfortunately the co-founder failed to deliver on his share of the tasks, according to him he was affected by x,y,z. (His reasons)

Then we failed to move from there and ended up shutting down the business."

Let the employer judge whether it's his incompetence or real problems. Why pass a judgement needlessly? Deliver facts.
