chmod775··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
You're one unfortunate motor control fuckup away from killing yourself pretty much always. Most animals are good at not killing themselves and humans are decent at climbing to boot.

Yeah, if you fall you might hurt yourself, but when you're paying attention to what you're doing you're likely less at risk than when you absent-minded walk down some stairs.

We spent probably hundreds of hours climbing all manner of tall playground structures as children, and I cannot recall anyone ever falling. I do remember some instances of people tripping and falling down a flight of stairs though...

chmod775··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
> The drones are cheaper 1:5 than AIM-9 missiles.

Given the relative sizes of the economies involved, that's still perfectly fine.

Next to the cost of the aviation program for providing the platform to launch those from, it likely hardly registers.

chmod775··on How our vibe coded website looks like a designer made it
Answer: because a human designed it in an iterative process. LLMs just wrote the code.
chmod775··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
> Use less Americanisms if you don't want to appear American.

Until this exchange, I hadn't realised I would be doing anyone a favour. I'll have a think about it.

chmod775··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
> 99.9% of the time I see this claim, it's right-wing Americans or bots trying to make the UK look like a hell-hole.

Given you got the nationality wrong 2/3 times in this comment section and they weren't bot accounts either, you might want to adjust that number.

You got the political lean wrong at least once as well. This might be the time to adjust your worldview. Empirically it doesn't seem to mesh with reality.

chmod775··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Do you think this is some "my country vs your country" competition? It's not. I wasn't trying to wound any national pride either.

Also I'm not from Florida or the US for that matter.

chmod775··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
I don't know about that case, but the bar is as low as it can be anyways. Hapless UK police are willing to play attack dog for nearly anyone.

Someone got arrested and intimidated by police because they criticized someone with even only a modicom of authority: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/mar/29/parents-arre...

Imagine getting six police officers sent to your house and spending 11 hours at a police station for causing "disharmony" by disagreeing with how your daughter's school operates in a WhatsApp group. In a sensible country that might've been a phone call or a single officer stopping to chat and defusing the situation if police decided to get involved at all.

> But this is the point! Israel and the Zionists are reenacting the worst crime in human history (the genocide and colonization of the Americas). They are, in 2026 doing what the Spanish did in the 1600s and getting the same resulting rebellion from the occupied people.

Yes, but I will still condemn both sides, even if one is merely responding in kind. If it was in my power, I'd lock them all up. Hamas' and Israel's leadership, as well as anyone who directly comitted those acts.

Then I'd replace Israel/Palestine with something democratic similar to Lebanon's solution of accomodating multiple major religions.

> If you were really in their situation, what would you do?

I am perfectly confident that the average palestinian would not go through with killing a civilian Israeli woman or child even if you loaded and pointed the gun for them.

The same is true for the other side. The Israeli government/IDF and Hamas represent the worst of both.

chmod775··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
History is barbaric and abhorrent. I'd rather we aim higher than use it to justify modern-day cruelty.
chmod775··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
We all live on land that at some point someone else considered their own.

Also I can tell just and unjust apart on my own, and I do not need some "international group" or "historical standard" to stand in for my frontal lobe and morals. Thank you very much.

chmod775··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Fighting back is legitimate. Doing so by essentially any means is not. The murder of civilians is where any side loses my support.
chmod775··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
What a strange world we live in. I never expected to see someone on HN openly supporting the murder of civilian men, women and children for the crime of living in a country that is at war with the perpetrators. That's a psychopaths twisted understanding of "eye for an eye" justice.

Thank god most of the world has since risen above that.

chmod775··on Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
There might be more value in having LLMs systematically hunt for mistakes in existing and widely assumed correct math papers, or hunt for counter-examples to things thought proven. There's likely to be a couple mistakes hiding in the less well scrutinized corners of mathematics.

Maybe something interesting will fall over because of that, who knows?

chmod775··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Well, but I'm only going back to Oct 8th! Gotcha!

"Who started it" is a stupid and pointless question to begin with, but now we're reaching new heights.

If both sides are comitting warcrimes, both sides must be condemned and sanctioned. It's not about who is committing warcrimes harder or who was first.

chmod775··on Heretic removes restrictions from language models
That's the right question to ask. One honest caveat: The interface seam currently forces the pin at the intermediate. Want me to implement or address the other item first?
chmod775··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
It's a meta product. Safe to assume that sooner or later it will be unusable unless you install the latest update so it can continue phoning home.
chmod775··on Nipple tattooist 'frustrated' by online censorship
A woman could be nude for all intents and purposes, but as long as her areola and crotch are still covered by some strained piece cloth that leaves little of what it is supposed to hide to the imagination, it's still a-ok. I can't tell if its an elobrate charade or if the mere thought of female anatomy actually compromised some people's intelligence to such a degree we ended up with this delicious clownshow.

The hypersensitivity to only overly specific areas of skin of some US-based services was bewildering to the average European a decade ago, but we really should be over it by now. The time for frustration and confusion is over, and it ought to be the era of open amusement.

chmod775··on Pirate Face Rescues LLM Models from Deletion
I don't see why it would be. It's transparent to other clients just like it is to the protocol. It cannot be more complex than alternatives by construction.
chmod775··on Pirate Face Rescues LLM Models from Deletion
You can trivially have storage deduplication for the files served via torrent, transparent to the protocol. The most trivial version of this that you can do today with pretty much any client is having a single directory containing files serving multiple overlapping torrents.
chmod775··on War may be coming. Are we psychologically ready?
> Threat from Russia

Right. Mighty Russia that has been fought to a standstill by its much smaller neighbour is going to provoke a military alliance absolutely dwarfing it into outright war. Not even China is going to back that after having a look at who the more valuable trading partner is.

Being ready for war is reasonable, being afraid or worried is a waste of time, and even irrational in this case.

chmod775··on South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state
"Burning spaceship falling into sun has clogged toilet"

I'm not sure that particularly matters at this point?

chmod775··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
The response is typically sending diplomats home, cancelling agreements, and sanctions. Something proportional. Not immediate outright war.
chmod775··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
You don't need a real basis for a response. There's nobody here enforcing any rules.

If you wanted you could claim you have evidence, without having any. Doesn't matter.

"This better stop or there will be sanctions, and if its not within your power to stop it, tough luck" is a valid response.

Whether that's wise is another question.

Here's a recent example where Germany so far claimed that it tied the attack to Russia, but whether that's actually true is anyone guess (since there's little publicly verifiable information released so far): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Leipzig_Airport_drone_att...

It wouldn't be terribly surprising if Russia was behind it, but on the other hand it wouldn't be the first false flag incident of this war either.

chmod775··on 4,400-Year-Old Tomb of Egyptian Judge Found at Saqqara with Colors on Walls
You could have read at least read some of my comments on here to quickly figure out I care about pleasing approximately nobody. Your sibling comment at least had their LLM go over them.

If you wish to continue the psychoanalyst LARP, feel free. Rather than be offended, myself and mine are bound to be further entertained.

chmod775··on 4,400-Year-Old Tomb of Egyptian Judge Found at Saqqara with Colors on Walls
And in your estimation, is the LLM correct in qualifying that as a pattern, or is it full of shit?

I could ask an LLM to generate something arguing against whatever yours put out, but I won't. I come here to talk to other people, not their electronic sycophants.

chmod775··on 4,400-Year-Old Tomb of Egyptian Judge Found at Saqqara with Colors on Walls
> LLMs average human writing thats out there

Not really, and also they do not vary their writing like humans would. Human writers do not repeat the same pattern over and over as much as LLMs do. They'd get bored of their own writing.

People as a whole are always going to be sick of whichever affectation current popular LLMs have, since they'd be reading a fair bit of that. As a writer you should steer clear of things that would elicit groans in a contemporary audience and "LLM prose" is just the latest addition.

So, as the person you're replying to said, you'll have to get used to this being a new angle from which writing is critiqued. You'll live happier if you don't let your cortisol spike over it. If it is any comfort, writers will eventually adjust and you'll encounter less of it.

chmod775··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
"AI solves niche thing you've never heard of" is a daily headline at this point. What's genuinely cool isn't that AI managed to solve some specific problem only a handful of people even cared about, it's that humanity can now cheaply clean up its backlog of such things.*

That does not mean that specific instances of it are still very interesting though. This article is the "I had claude vibecode a thermostat for my bathtub" of cryptography.

* And in this case I'm not sure it even meets that bar. For all we know a couple readers back when the book released had a delightful afternoon with it, solved the riddle, then forgot about it.

chmod775··on One woman's Tesla was remotely controlled by an abusive ex-partner
> I am in your car. I am in your maps.

That's the worst villain monologue I've ever heard, but unintentionally funny. Somehow appropriate for someone sharing his name with a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure villain.

chmod775··on Chinese AI Companies Conducting Distillation Campaigns Against U.S. AI Companies [pdf]
It appears we're setting the scene for another round of hapless protectionist policy.

The time where even a token justification was necessary has long passed, so I'm surprised they bothered.

chmod775··on I Rewrote My Back End in Go in 72 Hours and Cut My AWS Bill by 94%
In a sane world this would still pass as satire.

In our world I'm not sure whether a human even read the entire thing before publishing it. There's absolutely nothing of substance in here.
