chmielewski··on Ask HN: Where are some good IRC/IM places hackers hang out?
#startups is for idiots - never found it useful just the same 5 people blathering constantly and judging newcomers

#debian-mentors on OFTC is nice

Really any channel where a bot posts recent builds...

chmielewski··on Purism’s Librem 5 phone starts shipping–a fully open GNU/Linux phone
I’m sure gimp etc would have to package a specific .deb to run on this thing - unless as you’re saying you really might be able to mess with init system and startx.
chmielewski··on Purism’s Librem 5 phone starts shipping–a fully open GNU/Linux phone
GIMP? Chromium? Even as a decade-long gimp user: I absolutely hope not. There is a huuuge difference between GNU/Linux (of which, 32/64-bit and architecture are of course considerations) and packages. I certainly hope they aren’t handicapping the phone by enabling bloated cruft trying to keep up with this crap.

...before the downvotes: I literally use each of these daily with the exception of blender...

Edit: you want to install your own WM without messing with DE? Good luck to you, is nothing good enough? This is the first step toward freedom since the bad guys won!

I had the original Palm Pre... after two years HP cancelled the Palm Pre 2 and other upcoming phones after WebOS tanked (was mismanaged absorbed into nonpublicfacing IP). I did a Debian chroot and used the phone as a Wi-Fi only thinclient for another year then sold it (3 years of use!) for more than I had paid for the phone. In my opinion this is the first phone to rival the Palm Pre which ran Debian at its core. I look forward to owning the first phone that I will truly enjoy in over 7 years. Corporatism and clueless consumerism has not won yet. This is still truly a bastion of freedom compared to the way COMCAST/AT&T took over mom-and-pop ISPs then deleted all copper. The fight is not lost! Happy hacking!!

"Removing barriers to cloud" worries me. Many government agencies have banned USB storage devices due to the policy complication and security headaches it invariably creates; I don't see this going any better than them announcing that they're "removing barriers to USB".

Being a compromise between convenience and safety is a core aspect of security, however when there's an administrative policy umbrella which covers a few ways "cloud" may be used safely, when it may be used unsafely... it seems like they need to create their own exclusive cloud or rethink this (yes, I understand this is a very non-specific, high-level-view document, and that the implementation details aren't outlined).

Hearing 'this involves a lot of risk, let's do this right' is one thing, seeing an administrative guidance from the US Government saying they will be implementing it is another thing entirely, and learning that this pertains to "cloud-in-general" use during the year 2019... I mean, to be clear, the document suggests that if they go through their own encryption funnel as specified by policy, they can touch 3rd party storage and applications. No matter how clandestinely you fill the safe, no matter how securely you hide the location in which it's buried, you're still using this big corporation's consumer grade junk. There's the saying "don't implement a technical solution to solve an administrative problem" (and vice versa)... this is implementing an administrative policy to acknowledge the technical problem, however what it will "solve" before they jump to the next thing will have to be seen. I'm willing to bet this will be scratched wholesale or change dramatically far before 85% implementation.

chmielewski··on Ask HN: Tips for taking better meeting notes?
Whenever I'm taking notes, I tend to only write down things I don't already know or understand which tends to lead to shorter list-style notes, each bullet point a gem enticing me to research and eventually fold that concept or terminology into my understanding. If I've got pages and pages of things I wrote down which I already know or can get up and talk about for 20 minutes on the spot... the document may only be 80% useless but I'll treat it as absolutely useless and won't revisit it.

I write in block uppercase, regular lower-case, and cursive, depending on whether it's an action item, an interesting personal note or bit of extracurricular knowledge to follow-up on, or something to transcribe (knowledge or command to be archived) digitally after the note-taking session.

I make liberal use of parens, square brackets and curly braces, which add additional meaning to the different styles of handwriting I employ.

Exactly this. I've heard people say that Dickens wrote amazing historical fiction - well, no, he wrote popular fiction.

chmielewski··on Fancy Zones, a tiling window manager
Decade-long user of i3 here, I have three different keyboards (netbook to server) and three different trackpads\mouses -- the keyboard is more efficient for resize operations. I use focus-follows-mouse (agreed, why not use all devices) and fling the cursor all over the place all the time, but don't have to click and don't even have to use my fingers if I can drag my lower palm across the trackpad.
chmielewski··on Recession Will Be Brutal for Millennials
Are the last paragraphs a conclusion\summary? Looks like they're supposed to be about "capitalism" from the header. I could hardly remember what the article was about while struggling through a few particular lines there. Maybe go learn how to use the word ("a capitalisms"?) and do some light research -- what capitalism? Corporatism?

chmielewski··on Time anxiety: is it too late?
"The lyfe so short, the craft so long to lerne" is certainly different than 'the life too short' or 'the craft too long to learn'.
chmielewski··on Ask HN: We're building a visual builder for cloud platforms
This is interesting, thanks. I've got a similar side project that involves a TUI ncurses menu to choose and input values which are used to spin up QEMU\KVM instances without using libvert et al.
chmielewski··on Ask HN: What are the productivity benefits of tiling window managers?
I like my tiling WM because I use it without a Desktop Environment. DEs are bloat.

I use my tiling WM with "focus follows mouse" because even though I use the keyboard "exclusively", being able to fling the cursor across the screen with your palm (from trackpad) and highlight a window without clicking is great.

My remote idler and my daily driver laptops have 512MB and 1GB of RAM, respectively. I've used these every day for 8 years. If I installed a fuller-featured DE\WM either would be downright unusable.

chmielewski··on Ask HN: Do you currently or plan to run a firewall at home(Pfsense, Sophos)?
PFSense, but imo microsegmentation of the network is more important than which one big lock you've got hanging on the front door.
