childofhedgehog··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
My 1984 HotPoint fridge with water and ice still works just fine other than occasional defrost leaks underneath. I pray I never have to replace it, but I have seen a few vintage ones like mine in perfect condition for sale. Adding more technology has not made these things last any longer, but it does add some convenience I suppose. I would prefer a 40+ year lifespan over a potential to brick the device during a test…

Probably an oversimplified question but how do we actually stop this?

Clear, relevant, and easy to understand. Thank you for writing this up, I’ll be sharing this link with all my non-tech friends!

childofhedgehog··on Why Book Corners won't sync contributions back to OpenStreetMap
I think the piece I’m confused most about is why the little free library website’s map isn’t the place to log little free libraries. That being said, it makes sense that OSM has guidelines like this in place to ensure the data quality stays, well, quality.
childofhedgehog··on Upper stage impacting the moon on 2026 August 5
What part of this is actually not mobile friendly? I’d argue this is laid out pretty well compared to some websites that are “mobile friendly” but load poorly or make it impossible to scroll.

My IT department and I fully support staff requesting YubiKeys, there’s no concept of being a “troublemaker” for having boundaries and respecting security requirements. I’d talk to your IT management if your company culture seems different, I bet the actual techs do not have an issue with this.

childofhedgehog··on Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users
Honda isn’t a premium car manufacturer, but also can you please show a source for “all premium car manufactures digitally id their components and will not accept 3rd party replacements.” I know plenty of mechanics and while OEM is usually the way to go there are many aftermarket parts that get installed regularly.
childofhedgehog··on Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users
The reason diesel folks delete emissions is because the way the new diesel motors are set up actually kills the motor. Buying a new motor (or a whole truck!) is extremely expensive. Now if the automotive industry came out with an efficient diesel that also ran well for more than 100k miles, we’d see a lot less deletions.
childofhedgehog··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
How is it “obviously about the kids”? Is it because they mentioned them? I would argue it will impact the kids but this isn’t being done for their benefit, it’s being done to regulate what we have access to as a whole. Slippery slope coming up!
childofhedgehog··on Dangerous hormone-disrupting chemicals found in US breast milk samples
These chemicals are so prevalent that there is no way to avoid them without legislature in a country that is destroying the ability to CHOOSE motherhood. So we’re setting ourselves up for forced births where the babies have no choice but to ingest these chemicals which negatively impact them. Hopefully this research leads to action to prevent this, but will likely get swept under a rug.

childofhedgehog··on A Farmer Donated Land to Turn into a Park. The City Is Building a Data Center
Having natural spaces within communities is vital for mental health. For example, Central Park in NYC is a vital resource for the city allowing people to enjoy nature close to home. Kids need places to go and play. Adults need space to recreate. Pets need space too. Why would you want to have no green spaces within your community?

We know that cutting down trees increases heat and intensifies drought but we continue to do it, how bad do things need to get before we reverse course?
childofhedgehog··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
How do you get the inclusion/exclusion to work? My last few attempts to use “-x” really didn’t exclude what I expected, and almost all the results had “x”. I have seen massive changes since 2005.
childofhedgehog··on Google changes its search box
The inability to do a proper search with “-x” x being a word you want excluded from the results but I can being able to have a convo about summary results is just mindblowing. I miss proper search. What’s everyone using for alternatives?
childofhedgehog··on The map that keeps Burning Man honest
So a giant party can clean up after itself, but 4th of July in Tahoe for example is a toxic mess. I wish more people would practice these principles. It’s impressive how well this is cleaned up.
childofhedgehog··on Police Have Used License Plate Readers at Least 14x to Stalk Romantic Interests

childofhedgehog··on Can I disable all data collection from my vehicle?
You can adjust the ECU for these 80s and 90s cars and “flash” them like anything else. There’s just a lot less settings! Not sure about the 70s but I’m sure some resto-mods also allow for this.
childofhedgehog··on Kyoto cherry blossoms now bloom earlier than at any point in 1,200 years
I had visited to see the cherry blossoms in 2017 and felt that we were going too early but actually made it for the peak. It’s scary how quickly the dates are shifting. I wonder what impact the earlier blooms have on the trees over the coming years, as this does not seem to be natural.

Is it just me or should advertising medication just be illegal as a whole? If you need meds you should talk to your doctor.

childofhedgehog··on Period tracking app, Flo, found to be selling user data to Meta
Why would anyone think that a non-HIPPA compliant app would keep medical information private to the level of security needed for medical data? Flo has definitely breached user trust, but that trust seems misplaced from the get-go.
childofhedgehog··on Microsoft says bug causes Copilot to summarize confidential emails
> However, this ongoing incident has been tagged as an advisory, a flag commonly used to describe service issues typically involving limited scope or impact.

How is having Copilot breach trust and privacy an “advisory”? Am I missing something?

childofhedgehog··on Show HN: Wildex – Pokémon Go for real wildlife
It makes suggestions as based on other photos and the location, this is what I was referring to. No idea if anyone ever confirms IDs for the pictures.

I have not tried Seek, but also just know to double check any iNat recommendations when I get home if I’m not 100%.
