You could pitch the idea to Zuck, see if he wants to burn $100b to try it out.
chihuahua··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
For the big screen, I have another tiny PC and a wireless keyboard.
chihuahua··on Couple was swatted 55 times in 2 years over a post about Norm Macdonald
Fool me 54 times, shame on you. Fool me 55 times, you can't get fooled again.

[An old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee.]

Or just watch Youtube on a laptop, and install an ad blocker.
chihuahua··on Mistral Large 4
Surely Sam Altman would not lie to anybody.
chihuahua··on Norway Eyes Partial Ban of Smart Glasses
It's a partial ban of smart glasses, so presumably either the left lens or the right lens will be banned. That leaves a monocle, so it will definitely be OK.
chihuahua··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
The article contains the following sentence: "In a randomized trial in Singapore, releases of Wolbachia-infected males cut mosquito populations by 85 percent compared to control areas and dengue infections by roughly 70 percent."

There are different things you can do to mosquitos with different techniques. The article discusses several different techniques. Some eliminate disease-spreading mosquitos, some eliminate the mosquitos. In Singapore, the latter was tried out. It is not the case that Singapore used chemicals.

They had a massive ad campaign about "think different", were you not paying attention? /s
chihuahua··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague
All the evidence was destroyed (probably just a coincidence, LOL), so it can't be proved either way.
chihuahua··on On social reality in China
Right, but Elizabeth Holmes already has investors lined up for her next attempt to revolutionize medical testing.
chihuahua··on The Legend of von Neumann (1973) [pdf]
How else would you predict the weather? By observing a frog in a terrarium?
chihuahua··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I've read that Honeycrisp is difficult to grow, that's probably why.

Cosmic Crisp is much easier to grow, at least in the climate it was developed for/in. Those 2 varieties are somewhat similar, although I find Honeycrisp a bit more subtle in flavor and enjoyable, while Cosmic Crisp has just a strong sweet/tart flavor.

chihuahua··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Have you bought wine at Trader Joe's? It used to be famous for its "2 buck chuck" aka Charles Shaw. And many other well-regarded wines for under $10.
chihuahua··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It's mealy, bitter, and has a thick unpleasant skin. Many articles call it "the worst apple in the world." Decades of engineering it for transportability at the cost of taste and edibility are to blame.

But the U.S. has created new, much better apples, like Cosmic Crisp (2020)

chihuahua··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
The article mentions that there were some stock splits along the way so today it would be 480 times as many shares.
chihuahua··on Ten lines of code that changed my world
I started with

  10 FOR I = 1 TO 10
  20 PRINT I, SQRT(I)
  30 NEXT I
and struggled to type this without errors into computers in department stores. I must have read this code somewhere and needed to see it working for myself.
chihuahua··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
"Any format that is less clean than my favorite analog format is crap. Any format that is more clean than my favorite analog format is soulless."
chihuahua··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
The problem with Steve Jobs and his insistence on doing things his way is that other people were like ants to him. He made other people's lives hell when they had to follow his borderline insane orders. He'd yell at people, belittle them, insult them, and he got away with it every time because he was a billionaire and those other people depended on their paychecks.

And it was often for details that didn't matter. Like the exact shape of the curve of the plastic housing of some long-forgotten iMac. People just want computers that work and that don't look like total crap, they don't even notice the corner radius or whether the motherboard (excuse me, "logic board") is aesthetically pleasing according to the genius that took one class on calligraphy at Reed College.

chihuahua··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
That's funny, as I was reading the comments on this page I was thinking the opposite: I don't understand people who get addicted to things.

Smoking seems gross and stupid and self-destructive to me.

Alcohol does nothing for me, I don't understand why people drink alcohol when it's clear they will get a hangover. Sometimes I drink wine or beer but there's nothing appealing about it.

Gambling (casinos, online, sports betting) seems stupid and pointless - it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll lose, it's the whole point of a casino.

Caffeine - I drink tea and coffee, but most of it without caffeine. Sometimes I drink caffeine every morning for a couple of weeks (mountain biking vacation), and then I stop it and feel bad for a day and then I'm back to normal.

I guess I'm just lucky.

chihuahua··on People Training OpenAI's AI Fired for Using AI to Train the AI
I heard you like AI
chihuahua··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
> > Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris - all prominent right-wing figures

> Are they?

Only for those who follow the line of reasoning "anyone who doesn't follow the party line 100% is a fascist/right-winger"

chihuahua··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
> They are smarter than the plebs and so the plebs are barely if even human

What's hilarious about that is that it's baked into the name of the group: rationalists.

"We are rationalists, we think rationally. Anyone who doesn't agree with us is therefore not rational, or irrational. And who do you think is right, the rational thinker or the irrational one? See, we are right because we're rational."

chihuahua··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
If you really want to have your mind exploded, take a look at the logo of Apple Computer. There's an easter egg hidden in there.
chihuahua··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
I know someone at FB who worked on a project whose entire goal was to use compiler/type checker technology to prevent intentional and unintentional leaking of personal data in FB back-end code. If you can believe that. The project had a fair amount of resources and high-level support.

I don't know if it was a psy-op or deception campaign or what.

chihuahua··on How the Chorleywood Bread Process transformed British bread
The peak of British engineering was in the 1990s when I briefly lived there, and you could not buy small appliances with a plug attached. You got the bare wire, and you had to buy a separate plug, and connect it yourself at home.

Of course, any rational British person would instantly understand that the best way to ensure safety is to have every single person wiring up every single plug in their house.

chihuahua··on How the Chorleywood Bread Process transformed British bread
The irony that caught my eye in the article is that American mass-produced sandwich bread is depicted as this old-fashioned, slow production process. It takes far too long for the time-crunched futuristic British bakers. Who can wait 5 hours for yeast to ferment? The Chorleywood process comes to the rescue and whips and explodes the water-flour mixture into a foam that is baked seconds later. While those old-fashioned Americans are still waiting for their ancient traditional yeast to slowly do its thing.

At the same time, we have legions of new-age Rogan-adjacent food influencers on both sides of the Atlantic droning on about how American flour makes them bloated and tired (a line that Rogan himself repeats ad nauseam) while European flour avoids all of these problems.

chihuahua··on DaVinci Resolve 21.1

chihuahua··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US
The United States and Canada must have enjoyed that feeling of safety, knowing that the Netherlands would not invade them. And of course, if someone were to invade the United States (or Canada), knowing that the mighty Netherlands would come to their help would be immensely reassuring.
chihuahua··on Commercially Available Bike Generators Are Not Sustainable (2011)
To be fair (as a joke), it's from Low Tech Magazine. Lithium batteries are too high-tech for them. They want you to power your mechanical blender, mixer, and other machines with a drive belt. Turn the drum of your washing machine with a wood fire heating the water.
