chiffre01··on Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward
Shooting for that 7 percent Linux desktop market share!
chiffre01··on Scientist exposes anti-wind groups as oil-funded, now they want to silence him
I feel you, I've had similar 'discourses" on local news sites in the comments. I assume the accounts are regular people, but they genuinely just believe whatever bad thing they hear about renewable energy and look no further.

There's always of course the bad faith accounts that spit out cherry picked facts and half truths, but they also don't seem interested in doing any actual discussion other than arguing.

chiffre01··on IBM's Power11 Processor Architecture
I think it's more likely they have a rack of IBM iSeries servers in the back someplace, or maybe in a colo data center.

chiffre01··on The great medieval water myth (2013)
I always though it was after the middle ages that alcohol was consumed for safety reasons. I also remember hearing it wasn't really the general population, but sailors on ships because water on long voyages wouldn't stay fresh very long?
chiffre01··on Open hardware desktop 3D printing is dead?
Wow ~$17,000 for a CNC router? You could buy a used Haas/professional mill for that much.
chiffre01··on Have you ever noticed that people dressed better in the past?
There were higher (different) social expectations of personal appearance amongst other things.
chiffre01··on Are you willing to pay $100k a year per developer on AI?
Commented on this the other day, I think AI is fundamentally different from ride share apps and Uber for X services. It's more likely to follow a Moore's law trajectory. Getting cheaper and better over time?

Or at least cheaper.

chiffre01··on U.S. alcohol consumption drops to a 90-year low, new poll finds
Anecdotally it seems like alcohol is being replaced with weed or other things. But it doesn't bode well for the future of mental health if social drinking is being replaced with solo drug use or just solo everything.
chiffre01··on Token growth indicates future AI spend per dev
Honestly we're in a race to the bottom right now with AI.

It's only going to get cheaper to train and run these models as time goes on. Modes running on single consumer grade PCs today were almost unthinkable four years ago.

chiffre01··on 36B solar mass black hole at centre of the Cosmic Horseshoe gravitational lens
How big would the diameter of this be ? Something like 8 light days ?
chiffre01··on Trump Orders National Guard to Washington and Takeover of Capital’s Police

chiffre01··on 1910: The year the modern world lost its mind
Again saying everyone was using a ton of coke back then, doesn't really line up with reality. Yes it was sold openly in pharmacies until 1914, and seen as a problem. Estimates from the time (1900) show 200,000 people (~0.3% of a ~76 million population) were regular addicted users. Compared with 2020's numbers: 6 around 6 million Americans use cocaine on a regular basis (1.8 percent).

Way more people are using it now than then.

chiffre01··on 1910: The year the modern world lost its mind
Saying everyone was 'coked out of our mind' seems a bit far fetched. Yeah there were niche products using coke and consuming/exporting it was legal, but historic production numbers from the period are a small percentage of modern production numbers even considering the populations were lower.

Cocaine exports then vs. now: early 20th century legal exports at their peak(1921 - 30 tons) were roughly 1/20 to 1/30 of current illicit production.

At the time most coca production was for local consumption, far less was aimed at the international recreational market.

Not to say there were not other drugs on the market, like Morphine

chiffre01··on Did Craigslist decimate newspapers? Legend meets reality
Like the article says, multiple things caused ( and are causing) newspapers to go out of business.

Just because a country didn't have Craig's List, there's similar services all over the place reducing ad revenue.

chiffre01··on EPA Moves to Cancel $7B in Grants for Solar Energy
Do explain how how solar is less efficient than burning gas or coal for electricity.
chiffre01··on Genetic correlates of social stratification in Great Britain (2019) [pdf]
TLDR:

This study analyzed genetic data from ~450,000 British individuals and found that genetic variants associated with traits like educational attainment, personality, and health are geographically clustered across Great Britain, with the strongest clustering seen for education-related genes. The researchers discovered that people with genetic predispositions for higher educational attainment tend to migrate away from economically disadvantaged areas (like former coal mining regions), while those with lower genetic predispositions are more likely to remain in or move to these areas. This migration pattern based on socioeconomic factors has created visible geographic clustering of trait-associated genes that correlates with regional differences in education, health, income, and even political voting patterns - essentially showing how social stratification leaves genetic "footprints" on the geographic landscape.

chiffre01··on Bad UX
I worked with a guy years ago who passionately hated Comic Sans. I told him to email Vincent Connare, the Comic Sans inventor, and tell him how much he didn't like it, and he did.

Anyway, no response until a year and a half later, then one day a simple F-you came back.

chiffre01··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
Lets be real here, in the past advertisers did pay for it, but all advertising spend has moved on to the clickbait-youtube/google/Facebook garbage heap.

chiffre01··on Electric cars produce less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
Automotive EE engineer? I'm sure everyone here would love your explanation of EV efficiencies vs ICE in different situations.
chiffre01··on Electric cars produce less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
My DIY e-bike has regenerate braking. It makes no meaningful difference for the battery charge. But in terms of brake pad life, they do seem to last about twice as long as before.
chiffre01··on So you think you've awoken ChatGPT
The real question is how are companies tracking this kind of behavior from users ? I assume using an LLM to do code generation or other token heavy things takes a lot more energy than a role playing session.

These users are probably in the higher profit margin category.

chiffre01··on Shale Drillers Turn on Each Other as Toxic Water Leaks Hit Biggest US Oil Field
According to the USGS:

Water use per well can be anywhere from about 1.5 million gallons to about 16 million gallons.

I think a Golf course might use a bit more per year, but this is per well and the state of Texas has 279,615 active oil and gas wells. Not sure of all of them are fracking wells or not.
