chickenimprint··on Qatar intelligence operation against FIFA officials
I was under the impression that everyone was aware of how deeply corrupt FIFA is. Didn't they green-light a World Cup in Russia while it was invading Ukraine?
chickenimprint··on Show HN: Generate quiz questions using AI
It seems to spit out nonsense questions with little relevance to the text. Given a text about grass, it might ask: "what is green?" followed by 3 actually green things, one of them being grass.

It's a fancy cloze generator. It has no understanding of which constituent parts of a sentence are related to the subject and does not generate alternative answers that are reliably wrong.

chickenimprint··on Why are there so few dead bugs on windshields these days?
How would that work? We don't have enough land as it is. And we can't pay for the additional labor small farms need, or food inflation will explode.

Making agriculture unproductive will just push the demand outwards like a beaker of toxic reactants boiling over. We can't impose more trade restrictions on foreign agricultural goods either, for fear of a trade war.

This hopeless romanticism of small organic mom-and-pop farming is misguided. The only solution I see is huge, highly efficient, automated, but also highly regulated farms. That, and veganism.

chickenimprint··on I help seniors with technology issues
Arch on a 5000 series AMD 2in1. Even the pen works.
chickenimprint··on We used to get excited about technology. What happened?
The way I understand it, job displacement is the main driving factor behind economic growth. Some jobs have been automated, but most have simply become more efficient to the point that the demand curve no longer warrants most workers.

I have this vivid memory of walking through a market in a Peruvian town. All off those sounds, smells and impressions would probably disappear I thought, to be sterilized and concentrated into a supermarket, and most of the labor lost. There were skillfully painted murals on the walls. "Vota por John Doe para Alcalde". Labor being cheap, it might make sense to enlist a veritable army of specialized painters for each and every election cycle, but they should just have posters printed for much less effort, I thought.

This is when the realization hit me. I knew now what capitalism meant and I felt so wrong for romanticizing life in less developed countries. If we want an increase in wealth, we need an increase in productivity. If we want an increase in productivity, we need continuous job displacement, for ever.

Those are two different analyses.

Were a culture war influencer to decide that speed limits were anti-freedom, that would not make speed limits themselves ineffective.

Compliance would surely suffer in one certain country, meaning the imposition of speed limits would lose effectiveness. That could warrant exploration of alternative implementation, policing and especially communication, I grant you that, but there simply is no alternative measure.

I get the appeal of holistic analysis, but you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater. What else can you do?

It's not that hard to drive safely. It's not that hard to wear a mask. I know it's not convenient, but statistically speaking you're unnecessarily killing people.

chickenimprint··on Re-Entering the Vampire Castle
"Dracula and his brother have abandoned their faith and have promised and sworn to darken the Christian faith.”

Is a terrible translation of

"Vnd der dracole vnd sein brueder haben abgetreten von yrem glauben vnd haben verhaissen vnd geschworen den cristlichen gelauben zu beschirmen."

"Beschirmen" meant the same thing in early new high german as it does today: to protect.

https://www.fwb-online.de/lemma/beschirmen.s.3v?q=Beschirmen...

Rather than to "darken" the Christan faith, they are said to have sworn to protect it.

chickenimprint··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring

chickenimprint··on Nvidia Reveals RTX 6000 with 48GB GDDR6 ECC Memory
In what world is that not fraud? Imagine if Ford were to advertise a new F150 for an (apparently) good price and then offer two models:

"F150 V8": an expensive truck with a V8 motor.

"F150 V6" a cheaper V6 sedan.

Clearly, these are two different products, even though they can do the same thing. You're sneakily using a known naming convention in your official product name to deceive customers on the price perception of the 4080 and the performance of the 4080 12GB.

chickenimprint··on Unicode character “ꙮ” (U+A66E) is being updated
As far as I can tell it swallows up the preceding го.

It seems to be preceded by other jocular glyphs among scribes. A regular o received a central dot when writing the word "eye": ꙩ

Words containing "two" or "both" had an o replaced by two conjoined os: ꚙ

It is only natural to carry on the in-joke for the dual and plural "eyes" like this: ꙭ

Our scribe simply got a little excited, following the pattern to it's logical end point in the term "many-eyed"

chickenimprint··on Pay attention to deviations from mainstream incentives
I agree, incentives are everything. That's why I don't want every restaurant to turn into classy hooters—yes, tipping strongly selects for attractive people, especially young women. It's so hard to shake the feeling of insincerity, for the very reason that I'm aware of the incentives. Are we all so lacking in affection we need people to butter us up for money?
chickenimprint··on Pay attention to deviations from mainstream incentives
I found those stories of "enlightened hospitality" creepy and presumptuous. Don't eavesdrop on my conversations and respect my choices. Are you suggesting my opinions on expensive wine are sour grapes? I didn't want wine or salad. God, I'm happy I don't live in a country where waiters are forced to be a hyper-social adult circus clown to compete for tips.

chickenimprint··on Modi brushes aside US sanctions, immense potential for India-Russia partnership
The amount of aid Ukraine is receiving from the west, simply for being a victim is flabbergasting. If India rejects liberal international relations for realist ones, if India supports perpetrators, India can't expect help from the west when China comes knocking. How can a western government sell to their voters, assistance for a country that supported the unmerited killing of Ukrainian civilians?

Liberal international relations work on the same game theoretical principles as any group interaction with a prisoner's dilemma-type payoff matrix. The optimal strategy for any individual is to betray, to not do work on the group project and still receive good grades, to fake your credentials on your CV and still get the job, to subsidize the murder of Ukrainians and still receive economic benefits and international sympathy.

Of course, if everyone refuses to work on the group project, you receive a failing grade. If everyone fakes their credentials, the company fails due to lack of expertise, if every country prioritizes their own interests over avoiding conflict, the world goes back to the pre-WWII era of rampant warfare, colonialism and exploitation. The optimal strategy for groups is to zealously persecute defectors.

This is the reason why this decision is much more relevant to India's future than you think. It's the reason why the West seems like a vindictive in-group that doesn't tolerate dissent. It's the same old mechanism that instructed the first multicellular organism to destroy cancerous cells. The mechanism that makes guppies instinctively reject their own conspecifics if they don't participate in the dangerous inspection of predators. The mechanism that drives our conceptions of justice, vengeance and shame.

chickenimprint··on YouTube joins Facebook in banning Andrew Tate
Even if you agree with his message, the guy is running a pyramid scheme.

The only reason he is famous, is that "Hustlers University" instructs you to spam clips of his to social media together with affiliate links to his scheme. Compound that with his Alex Jones-like talent to generate the most divisive, ridiculous, humorous and infuriating soundbites and you have a TikTok smash hit. But just like Alex, once he glows out, his shady dealings and ridiculous statements will relegate him to a subject of mockery and an argument to dismiss his ideas for the opposing side.

chickenimprint··on How messed up was Germany's energy policy?
This is nonsense, Germany is militarily very weak and only makes up 20% of the EU economy. You make it seem like they own Europe and are some scheming superpower in disguise. There's not much they could do in terms of military aid the US couldn't do 20 times over in half the time. France is like twice the size as an arms producer, what are they doing? What about Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria and Belgium? None of these countries needed an excuse to do nothing.

Germans might not have enough gas to heat their homes which would cause the government to fall and you see this as some sort of genius chess move.

chickenimprint··on A Look Back at the USSR Computer Industry
Sounds cumbersome because you're not used to it.

One of the benefits of being balanced is that it's self-rounding: Just turn any amount of final digits into 0s and you're done. What if you want to express the exact half, decimal 0.5? Well you'll end up with either 1.TTTTT... or 0.11111... so it could round either way. If we were to use this system, shops could no longer manipulate us with prices ending in .99.

Give it a minute to fully grasp the concept and you'll see how intuitive it is.

chickenimprint··on In defense of swap: common misconceptions (2018)
Sorry for the late reply.

Okay, so I'm aware of the conundrums surrounding mounting the ntfs volume of a hibernated windows installation detailed on the wiki page. However, the same section clearly states that booting another OS even while a Linux system is hibernating can result in a broken EFI System Partition.

This clearly does not relate to NTFS. I'm not knowlegdeable enough to understand the means by which this occurs, but I felt like I needed to give the person a heads-up before they brick their install.

Do you use multiple drives on your laptop? Because a single EFI system partition might become corrupted if you boot a system while the other is hibernated. Please refer to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dual_boot_with_Windows#Fast...
