chicagobob··on Amazon Has Axed Its New Stargate Series
That's a bummer. I literally started my latest rewatch because of this news.
chicagobob··on MacBook Pro Insomnia
Exactly what the author meant to say.
chicagobob··on An election forecast that’s 50-50 is not “giving up”
True, but the word "blowout" in this case is just a crazy side-effect of our weird electoral college system.

Everyone knows that in all the swing states (except Arizona), the final vote margin was just a few percent, and that was well within the MOE for all the "50-50" polling in each of those states.

No one seriously believes that any President has had a blowout election since maybe Obama in 2008 or Bush in 2004, but the media sure loves the word "blowout".

chicagobob··on Reddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout ‘will pass’
Depending on which post you look at somewhere between 1% - 6%. But, the more important question is which users use Apollo (or other 3rd party tools).

The answer overwhelmingly is mods and content creators, the most important people to Reddit's success.

chicagobob··on A Smart Plan to End the U.S. Lockdown Arrives Just in Time
That man is a genius: let's do wide scale testing & contact tracing!

Exactly what everyone has been saying for a while now.

chicagobob··on Car tires biggest likely source of microplastics in California coastal waters
The blended 2017 US average is 1.54 people per car, source: https://www.energy.gov/eere/vehicles/articles/fotw-1040-july...
chicagobob··on Illinois Bet on Video Gambling and Lost
While there are clearly communities where this is a problem, I've lived in Chicago, now I live in the suburbs and still work downtown, and honestly outside of OTB and the Casinos, have never actually seen a video gambling machine in Illinois. So, this is not a state wide blight, but more of an isolated problem in various places.
chicagobob··on Apple Finally Updates MacBook Air with Retina Display, Touch ID
There are literally dozens, just google or search Amazon, here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Charger-Charging-Breaksafe-N...
chicagobob··on YC Research: Universal Healthcare
Only partially. Often at the time of consumption cost isn't something one can use to make decisions. But for those other times, sure it would help.

Speaking of lack of info about pricing you might find this interesting: https://www.statnews.com/2017/02/06/health-insurance-high-de...

chicagobob··on Senators Want FCC to Crack Down on ‘Harmful Zero-Rating Offerings’
Yea, that's nice, but under a Republican administration that's not going to happen.
chicagobob··on Home Depot Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Visa, MasterCard
That is not quite correct. Neither MasterCard nor Visa charge merchants any extra to use ApplePay. In fact, some merchant banks even lower merchant fees if they adopt secure payment methods like ApplePay.

MasterCard and Visa do pay Apple a minuscule fee (15¢ per $100.00, and less in Europe), however, it is smaller than the amount they expect to save due to reduced fraud from folks using ApplePay (and Apple apparently has also agreed to split some fraction of any fraud losses with them).

chicagobob··on The Evolution of Alternative Medicine
What is Alternative medicine that works is called? Medicine.
chicagobob··on My Experiment Opting Out of Big Data Made Me Look Like a Criminal
In addition to Tor, I didn't see in the article, did she use Ghostery or any other browser privacy plug-ins?
chicagobob··on Apple Developer Update
sigh Get a copy of the MMM and read it. TL;DR: adding more people to a project won't necessarily help make it go any faster and often will slow it down.
chicagobob··on MyRedis acquired by Garantia Data, gives customers 3 days to move off
this. good edit. was just going to post to say this.
chicagobob··on MacBook Air supplies dwindle ahead of WWDC, Intel CPU refresh
Agree 100%. I travel a lot and need more power. I currently have a 13" MBA, and am waiting to see what the next refresh offers, but am seriously looking at a 15" rMBP for my next machine. The screen is sooooo much better that the extra weight becomes a non issue (plus all the extra CPU power is huge too).
chicagobob··on Show HN: I'm building an open-source, high-frequency trading system
Are you aware of zipline ports (or similar libraries) in Ruby or ObjectiveC (or plain C)?
chicagobob··on Setting up Sublime Text 2
we also have a rule that when possible (like you've opened up an old file with whitespace issues), that you should clean it and do a whitespace changes only commit before getting to work. It makes everyone's life easier if they're not looking for the "real diff" in your commit.
chicagobob··on A Personal Statement from Iain Banks
I love the names of the Culture ships! sigh this is sad news.
chicagobob··on Dan Benjamin: Regarding The Talk Show
I've never gotten any of these complaints about shows running "overtime". Personally, the longer the better IMHO. They're podcasts. I listen as much as I can, and then pause them to pick them up later. Short ones are just over quicker and then I have to wait until the next one until there's more to listen to.

PS: (edit) unless its music, I almost always listen to the spoken word at 1.5x or 2x speed.

chicagobob··on Google (Potentially) Blows the Door Off Oracle's Copyright Claims
Don't forget that Groklaw is quite slanted in Google's favor just like FOSS Patents is slanted against Google. To get a balance you need to read both (well actually even more sources).
chicagobob··on Mac Malware Outbreak Is Bigger than 'Conficker'
Hmmmm ... I just read a blog post (Ars??) that upto 1% of Macs could be infected.

What percentage of Window machines did Conficker infect? 30% 50%? I seem to remember it was a huge percentage.

chicagobob··on Smooth CoffeeScript
This, a thousand times this.
chicagobob··on A White House Petition: should daylight savings time end permanently?

chicagobob··on A White House Petition: should daylight savings time end permanently?
That touches on my main point. I think relatively speaking it has outlived its usefulness, but twice a year its very disruptive to my family's daily schedule for a few days. My kids are too young to understand it and just know that their day is off somehow.
chicagobob··on Overview of Text Editors for Programming on the Mac
FWIW: I use XCode for all Objective-C development, TextMate for almost everything else, and BBEdit to open large files (IMO the single biggest area of weakness for TextMate). I've tried other editors, but 3 covers everything I need.
chicagobob··on New Boom Reshapes Oil World, Rocks North Dakota
cash for clunkers got a statistically signification number of poor milage cars off the road, that also helped with our nations oil consumption.
chicagobob··on Steve Jobs contacted Samsung in 2010 to resolve Apple patent dispute
Well, ok, but you need to consider that Apple is actually winning most of the cases where it has accused Samsung of copying it. It has gotten injunctions. This is clearly a case of a company (Samsung) not thinking though the consequences of its actions. Although lots of companies copy stuff all the time, Samsung has done a really thorough job of copying the iPad this time around.
chicagobob··on United States loses AAA credit rating from S&P
Please note that there are two other credit rating agencies, Moody’s and Fitch, and both of them have stated that they have no current plans to downgrade US debt from AAA, although one of them did place a negative outlook on the US. So, generally as long as one of the three agencies has a AAA rating the debt is usually fine for most investment / trust purposes.
