What about investing on margin? We should introduce margin calls for credit cards. Owe more on credit cards than you have in the bank and you have to pay it all back at once.

cheschire··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
What makes you think an "expert" was not consulted on this? Experts can be wrong too, regardless of credentials. That's why AI should be used to review and critique all new laws going forward, in order to prevent such mistakes from being made law. Hard /s, btw.
cheschire··on Newgrounds.com – A community of games, music, and art
It peaked and went on a decline in the period before companies were snatching up sites just to merge their user bases.

Had newgrounds continued into the 2010's, it would've been bought by Google to boost Google Wave / Circles / Plus whatever, and then it would've been actually shutdown.

So its age is actually what helped it survive I suspect.

The peak was 4 years ago and the stats you shared seem to agree with the “news” here that it’s decreasing recently.

Looks to me like the real peak was the late 70’s / early 80’s with beer on a steady decline ever since and wine/spirits not quite replacing it.

Maybe this is a response to becoming an empty nester. You’re entering the next phase and taking time to reflect.

The American monoculture, especially the “bigger” version you probably see in Texas, gets a little more direct observation when you’re between phases of life.

Right now the monoculture is leaning into heavily using AI in all aspects of life while also outwardly hating it… and also gambling for some reason.

You’ll probably start looking to retirement goals next, but those plans will likely go through phases themselves as grandkids may or may not enter the picture.

This won’t be the last time you have one of these out-of-body type self awareness experiences.

Not in Hyundai. The brightness controls have no impact when CarPlay starts up.
cheschire··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
How does CarPlay still not have a brightness control? I leave my CarPlay perpetually in dark mode because light mode is searing in all but directly sunlight.

cheschire··on Tell HN: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the 'allow training' setting
Interestingly your cynicism does not seem to account for OP?

I actually found my setting was enabled today when I know it was disabled before, so I’m inclined to agree with OP. I just think it was worth mentioning that there are other cynical takes you seem to have left out.

Why carry a phone at all? Just buy one and leave it at all the places you go. Have your personal security carry a backup in case you go somewhere your assistant hasn’t been able to get a phone delivered to yet.
