cheschire··on The case against boolean logic
The emphasis on applying false dichotomies to every situation, in my opinion, is what leads to the truthiness[0] inherent in modern partisan politics.

cheschire··on Project Hail Mary – Stellar Navigation Chart
Glad to see it includes Wolf 359.

Edit: oh interesting. Apparently it was mentioned in the book as being affected by the astrophage. I forgot that tidbit and thought it was just a Star Trek reference.

cheschire··on AI is just unauthorised plagiarism at a bigger scale
The author acknowledges this by saying “at a bigger scale”, implying there are smaller scale methods such as what you have said.

cheschire··on Design posters showcasing your country's electrical grid
Neither is California. So?
cheschire··on Tesla Solar Roof is on life support as it pivot to panels
Pretty sure this didn’t help either though:

> Customer service complaints are pervasive and consistent. Tesla Energy has a 2.6 out of 5 rating on SolarReviews

cheschire··on Citroën metropolis concept car (2010)
Looks like a pretty standard sedan from any company from that era to me, just with a Citroen grill and fancy rims.

Put that grill on a BMW 6 series from that time, looks about the same.

cheschire··on The Third Hard Problem
His message was submitted before the memory recall completed execution.
cheschire··on Points are a weird and inconsistent unit of measure
EMUs always seemed weirder to me. Like an unnecessary compromise instead of just using metric outright.

cheschire··on A Meta employee gets real about the horror of working there
He was done with Facebook. Then he read Ready Player One and thought fuck it, why not?

It was a bet. It didn’t pay off. His billions might be tied to the value of the company but his millions are safe and secure. He can keep taking bets for a long time.

Meta is just an investment vehicle for him at this point.

cheschire··on Explore Wikipedia Like a Windows XP Desktop
Knowledge doesn’t neatly align to a nested hierarchy. Especially written knowledge.

Language is an imperfect means to convey knowledge, and people store that knowledge in subjective and highly personal ways.

You may mentally recall balloons within “entertainment” or “party”, whereas I might store that knowledge under “horror”.

Add onto that the massive focus on using graph theory to scale social networking technologically, and you effectively lose any motivation for rigid hierarchy.

cheschire··on Which country will be the first to pass laws limiting Meta Ray-Ban glasses?
Not having an "Ask HN" in front of this gives me strong prediction market vibes.
cheschire··on Instructure pays ransom to Canvas hackers
The defendant, who calls himself “zero cool”, has repeatedly committed criminal acts of a malicious nature.
cheschire··on The greatest shot in television: James Burke had one chance to nail this scene (2024)
I remember on a podcast interview I listened to that he said he intentionally made every episode as close to a “oner” as possible using very long takes and hidden transitions where possible.

It’s to heighten the sense of anxiety and tension for the viewer in order to amplify the comedy.

Great show!

cheschire··on Making your own programming language is easier than you think (but also harder)
Yeah except my version would only accept tabs instead of allowing (and even encouraging!!) spaces for indentation.
cheschire··on Meta's embrace of AI is making its employees miserable
Jesse Eisenberg captured this perfectly.
cheschire··on Mythical Man Month
Maybe I’m misunderstanding but that sounds like a 6x improvement not 12x.
cheschire··on Tesla is recalling its cheaper Cybertruck because the wheels might fall off
When was the last time you drove on an unplowed road with only rear wheel drive?

Unpowered wheels become uni-directional skis, regardless of their ability to turn left and right.

cheschire··on The Disadvantages of an Elite Education (2008)
Maybe I’m being too specific in my interpretation of GP’s use of the word “understanding”

I interpreted it to be an understanding derived from experience from having done the job, but now after your message I could see it meaning an understanding of what the output should be, not necessarily how that output was produced.

cheschire··on The Disadvantages of an Elite Education (2008)
> If you want to be a manager you have to understand the jobs of people you manage.

What? No you don’t. You have to know how to identify people you can trust, how to establish and grow that trust with them, and how to maintain that trust.

If you have bidirectional trust, then you can successfully manage people who do things you don’t understand.

Edit: read my reply to surgical_fire below

cheschire··on AI didn't delete your database, you did
I don’t think it’s missing, I just think it’s seen as a liability, and American society has been known to absolutely obliterate people who are liable.

Everyone thinks they have the right to judge, and use the massive amounts of available information to do so, even if they haven’t been trained to judge.

cheschire··on Should I run plain Docker Compose in production in 2026?
Caffeine is healthy. Caffeine is unhealthy. Caffeine is healthy again. Eggs are healthy. Eggs are unhealthy. Etc etc etc.

There’s a reason articles like this exist. Things change.

cheschire··on Securing a DoD Contractor: Finding a Multi-Tenant Authorization Vulnerability
Perhaps the community could band together and crowdsource the moderation action through flags. Kidding.
cheschire··on Nuclear receptor 4A1 linked to health effects of coffee: study
Even caffeine has an LD50!
cheschire··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
Many legit users have a license applied to their Microsoft account that predates the current situation. That is to say, a license carried over from windows 10 and possibly as far back as windows 7, since there was a time where Microsoft was offering free license transfers. Many people see windows 7 as being not shitty and abusive.
cheschire··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
These suggestions are like telling someone that that is being harassed to maybe wear something different.

While it would, yes, likely avoid the problem happening again, it shifts the responsibility to the party that should not be at fault.

Meanwhile the harasser is like “what’s wrong? I took an anti-harassment class?”

cheschire··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
You may be surprised to learn some of the employed adults on this site were born after the 90’s.
cheschire··on Why does it take so long to release black fan versions?
I’m getting tired of the grayscale colors of the 2010’s too. I could use more brown and beige in my life.
cheschire··on Maladaptive Frugality
While the underlying intent behind bringing awareness to microaggressions is likely pure, it has a tendency to promote a level of hypersensitivity which is a net negative for society.

It’s often more beneficial to bring an open mindedness to a conversation that allows for benign usage of words that could otherwise be intended to slight. Constantly worrying about if everyone is being sensitive enough can also just be exhausting. To everyone.

cheschire··on Auto Polo
I’m sure many of us are reminded immediately of the old Top Gear auto football matches:
