cheesepaint··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I am from a 4th generation wine growing family from Germany, and we have the exact same issues here. There is a global oversupply of grapes and wines. A lot of people in my region are struggling, my family included. Some experienced growers estimate 5-10 years until it becomes better for growers.

The trade wars, which some commenters suggested as a reason, are adding not as much to it as you might assume. I personally thing that it is more of a generational shift of habits.

cheesepaint··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
>> These "age verification" laws are - by design - identity attribution systems.

At least in the case of the EU, this is not the case. The age verification is performed anonymously based on the eWallet.[0]

cheesepaint··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me
I didn't see it as a changed pattern of speech, more like more texts/scripts edited or written by LLMs.

But I could be wrong, I am from a non-English speaking country, where everybody around me has English as a second language. I assume that patterns like this would take longer to grow in my environment than in an English-speaking environment.

cheesepaint··on Why I Joined OpenAI
For me, it just sounds like a ChatGPT-generated sentence. Especially, it likes to write sentences like "it's not just about... - it's about ..." and it first sounds legit, but it doesn't really make much sense when you start to think about it.
cheesepaint··on OpenClaw is what Apple intelligence should have been
I really do not think much will change. In 10 years, computers will still look kinda like today and will be used like today. AI will be used to make drafts, but nothing more. For everything else, they are way too unreliable.

People hate to change habits, and many here overestimate the willingness and ability of, especially, older people to change how they use technology.

cheesepaint··on Web Browsers have stopped blocking pop-ups
As much as I dislike popups: I really doubt that there would be a significant user gain for Firefox. I think most users simply do not care about it, especially non-tech-savvy users. Especially since so many people stay on Chrome, despite its efforts to drown ad-blockers.
cheesepaint··on Floor796
Amazing work, but I didn't expect to see Wunschpunsch (https://floor796.com/#b2l2,302,256) or Kommisar Rex (https://floor796.com/#b3r1,163,852) there. Others mentioned Soviet-era characters, which makes me curious about the cultural background of the creator.
cheesepaint··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
I'm in Indonesia right now as well and my Proton VPN still works. But I would see it as a short-term solution.
cheesepaint··on My bank keeps on undermining anti-phishing education
As someone who lived abroad - I really do not agree.
cheesepaint··on My bank keeps on undermining anti-phishing education
I had a similar thought, but I suspect that this campaign is run by the umbrella organization
cheesepaint··on My bank keeps on undermining anti-phishing education
I don't think that everything needs to be a sales pitch all the time. But I am curious, what kind of service do you see promotable in the article?
