charred_toast··on YouTube has deleted the account of David Icke
@imgabe says it well in this comment section:

> YouTube has clear policies prohibiting any content that disputes the existence and transmission of Covid-19 as described by the WHO [World Health Organization] and the NHS [the U.K's healthcare system] [emphasis added]

The WHO at least has been flat out wrong several times during this pandemic, such as telling people not to wear masks. Anointing one agency as the sole source of truth and censoring anything that contradicts it is not going to lead to a good outcome. People need to be able to question authorities.

I agree. It's the spirit in which these actions have been taken, as if to conform to a narrative, which in itself, has see-sawed between facts and fiction, as to almost being intentionally confusing. It's not a "conspiracy theory" to ask questions, critical thinking has taken a huge blow since 9/11.

charred_toast··on Ask HN: How did you fix your narcissism?
My guess is it hinders the mind's ability to react negatively as quickly and allow mental processes to do their thing, so to speak, more objectively. IE: not jumping to conclusions.

Wow, can I hire you? You seem to be dripping with expertise, and so charming.

If it means anything to anyone, my sister is naming her design company after her beloved dog, Shadow.
charred_toast··on Carrier sales of phone-location data is illegal, FCC plans punishment
Are there even laws anymore? It seems like the law only applies to non-corporate entities and citizens. If you're in politics, law enforcement, or the Fortune 500, expect zero consequences for breaking the law. Exceptions exist but aren't the rule.
charred_toast··on How to Find New Music
Listen to KCRW radio. Listen to DJs that play the genre of music you like. Radio is still the best way to disconver new music. Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6 is also another one of my go-to's. I appreciate an eclectic mix of recently released music (KCRW) and jazz, world, tasteful hip hop, etc. (Gilles).

Apple has their hands tied because of all the factories churning out their products that would come to a standstill if the Chinese government decided it wanted to. It's sad and unfortunate, but what other business decision would a CEO make if 80-90% of their future revenue stream disappeared overnight? Can someone else help me play devil's advocate? In any case, if we're so innovative as a country why can't we make more stuff here, that's the only solution, not globalism. This scenario is an unintended consequence of globalism. Apple isn't intentionally being bad, they probably don't have a choice, right? They put too many eggs in one basket. You can say too bad, but when the banks were bailed out, I was saying they deserved to go under as well.
charred_toast··on Django core no more
If it means anything, reading the first part of it inspired me to want to contribute to it, if at all ever possible, because I believe Django is important enough to sustain and to recognize these issues before they evolve into problems is good idea.

charred_toast··on An Easier Way to Build Alexa Skills Using Python
I agree, I've used this package since the beginning. Python is my favorite computer language so far. I started with Flash, then HTML & CSS, then jQuery, PHP, MySQL, etc. Could not mention Python without Virtualenv, Django, and Flask. To me, these tools are like LEGO for programming. I like JS too, who wouldn't? People literally live on the internet.
charred_toast··on Responsibility Deflected, the CLOUD Act Passes
I guess we learned nothing from the 20th century. While our country, at least used to, pride itself and base it's image upon excoriating unjust governmental overreach abroad (East Germany), it has become exactly what it once bemoaned.

charred_toast··on Exercism – Level up your programming skills
PHP was my first bike, so to speak, so I can't knock it. Plus later I learned Slack was written in PHP, and I was like, whoa! I definitely think it gets a bad rap, mainly because it's almost too easy to use, correctly and incorrectly.

Case in point. Thanks. Also, the moderators seem to have no life. Please deactivate my account if you're offended. I'd prefer not to spend more time attempting to communicate with one dimensional, armchair experts.
charred_toast··on Why we switched from Python to Go
The audience on Hacker News takes themselves way too seriously, apparently.
charred_toast··on Why we switched from Python to Go
Can you elaborate, somewhat? How long ago did you try GO? Also, I agree, having a generous assortment of contributed libraries makes all the difference.
charred_toast··on Why we switched from Python to Go
You had me at 4. I'm definitely GOing to give this language a GO now. That was a GOod introduction to the language, a veritable advertisement, if you will.

charred_toast··on My essential django package list
Exactly; it takes time to learn the thing—it's huge compared to Flask. The documentation is killer though. I've been learning django for at least a few years now. I try not to rush, I know I'll figure it out eventually is basically my philosophy.
charred_toast··on My essential django package list
I love Flask for mini-apps and micro-services. I pretty much use it when I want to run a single python file with a web-facing component. It's also great when I need to build simple celery or task/cron-based apps. Like the other commenters have already pointed out, if you need a full-fledged website, Django.

charred_toast··on What happened when I opened a restaurant in Portland
If you've never actually worked in a restaurant, do everyone a favor and don't try to open one. It's vanity a play, that's all.

Owning a restaurant for some reason has this prestige attached to it. I think it's the media that has consistently portrayed kitchen life using an Instagram lens, leaving out the day-to-day. The author is correct, it's horrible, but some people actually thrive in that environment. Those that get that lightbulb moment and think, "whoa, I should open a restaurant," should stop.

Eating at a dining location run by amateurs is like getting your haircut at the vocational high school.

There are so many finer points that you have to collect with experience before trying it yourself, the odds of succeeding for DIY restaurant owners is hilariously low. It should say something that even world-renowned chefs struggle to keep their doors open.

I love the restaurant business, it's difficult and I admire people that can do it well—it's nearly impossible.

>"You have to love stress to work in a kitchen. Have you ever stared down a line of Friday night dinner tickets after your sous just walked out of the shift crying because her mom died? No? Then you don't know stress."

Case in point. Yes, that's stressful. You want to know what's more stressful? Working Friday and Saturday nights every weekend for 5 years straight, taking ticket after ticket, order after order. When you get good at being a restaurant owner, it's a whole different kind of stress, exhilarating I'm sure, but a stress that requires an incessant amount of detail and attention. The author didn't make it that far.

Furthermore, it elicits a sense of flight or flight, and causes a reaction, good or bad, I think. Again, it's a reaction; people in general aren't good at controlling those, nor do they last. A person can react as much as they want, but after a night's sleep, everything takes a different tone.

Our subconscious minds play a role that is probably undervalued. The jealous boss might wake up feeling relieved, invigorated.

Context also is important.
