charlesmarshall··on Localyser - Crowd Sourced Postcode Data
Yes, from a front end point of view you can give the demo page a try - http://localyser.com/demo.html - using B1 1BB

Is that what you mean (still tired, shouldn't drink on school nights!)?

charlesmarshall··on Localyser - Crowd Sourced Postcode Data
sorry, i was getting the wrong end of the stick on that.

That is a good idea but your original point might be right, empty fields could be a bit strange. I'll give it a try and see how how it looks (probably not till the weekend - client work to do).

charlesmarshall··on Localyser - Crowd Sourced Postcode Data
At the moment it's just a lookup to the database. It does have the ability to save and show more fields than whats on the signup form (see the demo - http://localyser.com/demo.html), that form is mainly tailored to match the how PAF data is returned for an easy drop in.

good call on open street map, i'll try and get in touch.

charlesmarshall··on Localyser - Crowd Sourced Postcode Data
thats strange, we did have an issue with older versions of chrome so it might be a problem with certain webkit version, i'll check that out. thanks for letting me know.
charlesmarshall··on Localyser - Crowd Sourced Postcode Data
hi, that is postcode to coordinates, the campaign to get the royal mails PAF data for free failed - http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/jan/22/postcode-pe...

Thats a good point about license; I've added it to the site now. I'd guess creative commons is the best fit, but open to all non-spammy uses.

Other sources would be good, I'll be dropping a message to the people at http://www.freeourdata.org.uk/ at lunch.

charlesmarshall··on Why I Switched to Git From Mercurial
not all guis are made equal, depends which is being used to how good or bad it is. I use gitx on osx (http://gitx.frim.nl/), other than the lack of a 'push' button its spot on, simple to use and powerful.
charlesmarshall··on Why I Switched to Git From Mercurial
although a bit biased, http://whygitisbetterthanx.com/ gives you the highlights of what git is good at.. for me its the simple branching coupled with easy stashing
charlesmarshall··on Why I Switched to Git From Mercurial
you can use commands like git filter-branch & git rebase to change your history - http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~blynn/gitmagic/ch05.htm...
charlesmarshall··on Why I Switched to Git From Mercurial
What part do you find complicated about git? The basic commands are: git clone, git add, git commit, git push ... most of these are handled by guis (tortoise, gitx, etc) so all you have to do then is click the right button
charlesmarshall··on "Tough. Django produces XHTML."
Not much, but why would you switch to html5? There is limited support for actual html5 elements, and if your not using them, then your not using html5, just html4 loose.

It's not like any browser is going to drop the html4 doctype so until there is widespread support for html5 elements (footer, article etc) there is no real benefit other than pr.

charlesmarshall··on A first step towards freeing London’s data
as the pagination on the a-z seems a bit broken, they do have a full listing page of whats planned on launch - http://data.london.gov.uk/datastore/data-packages-launch

edit: sorry, that page is list of whats planned for launch, not whats there now

charlesmarshall··on A first step towards freeing London’s data
o, they also have a google group for things that need more than 140 chars - http://groups.google.com/group/londondatastore
charlesmarshall··on A first step towards freeing London’s data
you could send them a tweet http://twitter.com/londondatastore and ask them to fix it

I've sent them a couple of bugs / broken links and they've fixed & replied within a few minutes.

edit: they've just tweeted about the xml structure so hopefully will sort it out soon.

Just as in genetics, diversity is good. Thats not the issue people are having with the article.

The article says that CS should change its culture in order to attract more and become popular, conforming with mainstream values.

If you told Stephen Hawking im sorry you cant have that picture of Spock on your wall, instead you have to have this poster of some pop group because thats what society deems acceptable. Do you think that would be well received?

The point is that if you have an interest in a field then you are tolerant of such idiosyncrasies in order to learn.

Basketball is a paid profession. Just look how much money the NBA teams have. Fewer people see it as their future but many children still grow up wanting to the be next michael jordan..
charlesmarshall··on Jekyll, the blog engine of kings
I was using Disqus as well for comments on my gihub blog, but some random reason it started redirecting to itself. Didn't have time to debug it so just removed it for now.
charlesmarshall··on Jekyll, the blog engine of kings
you can use categories as a yaml listing and that works.. just means the url for the post will become /cat1/cat2/date-title.html
charlesmarshall··on Your Pages Will Load Faster With Rails
What i'm trying to get over here is that if your site already uses all of these techniques and more while running on something faster than rails then you will not make the page faster, and thats what the title claims.
