charlesmarshall··on Ask HN: What is your policy on IE6 development?
For me it just depends upon the type of site I'm working on.

In these competitive times you need to support as close to 100% of the sites user base as possible. If the site drops 10-12% to a rival because it lacks ie6 support thats not going to go down well at all.

I do like the car analogy, but if you have a 25 year old car & you can't get a newer one, it's rather harsh. You can get away with it as long as the percentage is low enough.

On backends (cms/admin areas etc) then this is were you can specify what browser can be used and ignore ie6 as long as you can explain why.

For my work projects ie6 is a must as it still registers around 10% of visitors. Personal projects tend to be more techy with virtually 0% ie6, so no need to support it.

I look forward to when I can ignore ie6 completely!

charlesmarshall··on Borders Books Hack: Buy 50 dollar gift card, get 10 dollar gift card free
I seriously doubt that a large retailer like borders would allow you to use a voucher on such offers.. most retails thought about such things and blocked them years ago.

the Google closure compiler also does inlining on the top settings (compilation_level = ADVANCED_OPTIMIZATIONS) http://code.google.com/closure/compiler/docs/api-ref.html

worrying state of affairs when the main site chucks out code like that ... doesnt really help the reputation of php ...
charlesmarshall··on Why git is better than X
yeah, git documentation does suck .. but you can find most things on http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~blynn/gitmagic/ and example based things on http://gitready.com/
charlesmarshall··on Why git is better than X
the majority of commands you use (clone, pull, push, branch, add) dont require many options at all .. -a -m -b ..

Of course if you're doing something elaborate then you will get some random options like -soft or --before="yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm" .. those are generally things you can't do in svn ..

edit: I forgot to mention that good guis like gitx do most of these things for you

charlesmarshall··on Ask HN: My CTO just left me 2 angry voicemails...
Startups that have recently launched and are dependent on a single product for income are going to be very intense around deadlines. If you're currently the sole / lead dev I doubt you have much to worry about. You are worth more to them than running a few hours late.

Let your cto cool off and theres no harm, then no foul.

If it's a good, popular, product then it is worth sticking with it, but of course your health should come first. Burn out over a job you don't need is not a good idea. Just try to balance things, set sensible deadlines etc so 13hr days are a rarity not the norm.

Edited for conciseness

charlesmarshall··on Google Closure: How not to write Javascript
blatant self promo - http://closureoptimizer.com/ - for a simple form to play with the optimiser basics
charlesmarshall··on Google Closure: How not to write Javascript
It also seems like the author also forgot that code brevity is very important when maintaining such a large code base. Everyone can understand that switch, but the suggested object replacement is not so obvious.
charlesmarshall··on Samsung dropping Symbian for Bada in 2010.
Sorry, so it does, I did not notice that. My mistake.

I was never questioning the validity of bada, thats a given. I was just thinking that dumping symbian off hand like that when, as far as i know, they have yet to ship a single bada handset would be rather strange think for an experienced vp to say.

charlesmarshall··on Would you (do you?) trust your company's source code to github?
Yes; github is a great service and I have now been using it personally & professionally for quite a long time (june 2008) and never had any security issues.

There are the occasional downtimes, but as its dvcs thats not really a problem, just push using ssh to your sites instead (wait 5 minutes, make a cup of tea, etc)

Like other posters in the thread I agree the real value is the people writing the code, not the code itself.

I would say if you're that paranoid about code leaks setup a gitorious server (http://gitorious.org/gitorious) on your network and save the monthly fee (and the worry).

You will, however, miss out on the other useful things github has to offer. Every repo now gets its own wiki & issue tracker, so no need for trac.

My current favourite feature is gh-pages (http://pages.github.com). You can make a named branch on your repo and it will be hosted as a website. If you have an API that can be your public documentation branch; you can also use it for simple sites (my blog is a github page). All pages are hosted free of charge on their shiny new rackspace servers. These days they also support cnames mapping.

Edited for typos...

It is some what expected for posters on HN threads such as this to explain their response in a concise fashion giving other readers a clear handle on the pros / cons of the situation and in this case helping the op to come to a decision.
charlesmarshall··on Tell HN: Can we stop commenting on troll comments?
same goes for me; been reading this site for ages. Made an account not that long ago when I finally gave up on reddit, after giving up on digg. Both for the same kind of reasons.

With popularity comes the masses and that will always lead to lowest common denominator winning out. Hopefully there will never be any lolz cats on here!

Great job btw pg.

charlesmarshall··on Konkuri: The simplest way to manage and publish your tournament
thats cool, might have to use that for the work lan gaming sessions ..
charlesmarshall··on Tell HN: Apple paid my iPhone money, with exceptional service
I had thought it had been picked up in other places, but fair enough if it wasn't (see op reply below). Like i said I'm just being cynical...

I know that it was about international banking as i read the the story when it posted; but how many of those take 3 months to sort out? None that i know of.

It always sounded to me like apple were trying fob the op off as long as they could till they fixed their code ... again, im a cynical bugger, but i'm glad they got it sorted for the op.

charlesmarshall··on [dead]
Now if their was a search or a duplicate submission check you would of known this has been submitted more than once already :P hehe
charlesmarshall··on Tell HN: Apple paid my iPhone money, with exceptional service
Glad to hear a positive story about Apples app store for a change .. I'm still a bit cynical; they only got their act together after a bunch of negative press about the issue..
charlesmarshall··on Samsung dropping Symbian for Bada in 2010.
hmm, senior vp saying something like that and not being named... i'll take it with a pinch of salt. Hopefully they will do more android handsets..
charlesmarshall··on Google Reduce Prices For Online Storage (20GB for $5/year, etc.)
Good point, with the newer slrs doing 720p video that would eat a big chunk ..
charlesmarshall··on Google Reduce Prices For Online Storage (20GB for $5/year, etc.)

charlesmarshall··on Dropbox (YC S07) looking for Android Developer
mit - best of the best .. that can afford it and fit in a niche they haven't filled you mean?

I think the trouble in this case would be the recruiting company that are reading them and only passing on the ones that tick all the right buzz word boxes ..

charlesmarshall··on Displaying RSS or Atom feeds in PHP with under 10 lines of code
I'm going to have to be pedantic on this one...

13 lines of php (including the open & close tags) plus 1501 (including comments) lines in the 'library' file .. or does the op think that libraries don't count as its in another file?

charlesmarshall··on Firefox Image Editor: 14 Lines of Code
Yeap, 14 lines & how big is that library? But as it's abstracted that doesn't count ;)
charlesmarshall··on Ask HN: Best Web Language to Learn
I would also say that if you're doing something really simple looking at github pages (html with jekyll & liquid) http://pages.github.com/
charlesmarshall··on Dropbox.com blocked as a malware site
seems like its sorted now.. no warnings when i just tried it.
charlesmarshall··on Google releases Closure, the tools behind the JS geniuses
If you want a simple web form for the compiler; i made http://closureoptimizer.com/ this morning (DNS might still be working itself out)

EDIT: spelling ..

charlesmarshall··on Ask HN Mac users: Do you use an antivirus ?
No, but more techy people will tend not to download / install / give passwords to "dodgy" applications
charlesmarshall··on Test your web app in any browser seamlessly
yeah, doesnt seem to do much on mac, just keeps sending you round in circles: home - create - launch - nothing - [repeat]

Maybe something a bit clearer indicating what os etc this works on; at least a message explaining why nothing is happening ..
