chaosbutters314··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
make robots that cnc cut brick to cover the ugly ass houses around the US
chaosbutters314··on Just how bad are we at treating age-related diseases?
you forgot HIV/AIDS. we have the tools to basically snuff it out in 60-80 years if every male was on prep
chaosbutters314··on How to solve computational science problems with AI: PINNs
Can PINNs go away? I do CFD and they show zero promise and application for real problems. just a waste of money
chaosbutters314··on Intel's latest flagship 128-core Xeon CPU costs $17,800
i did. small scale (cfd/fea) simulation when the cloud or company server doesnt make sense. with how much data the model makes, easier to work locally and test it runs before spending time and money on cloud. also, a lot of simulatione dont need to be that big so this is great for working all locally and not having to pay core hours. usually pays for itself in a year frankly
chaosbutters314··on Ubuntu squeezes more performance than Windows 11 on new AMD Zen 4 Threadripper
ive worked at companies where we buy these types of workstations for fea/cfd/ML

if the company has a overbearing IT, we run windows for "security". at places where we move fast and break things, we run ubuntu and IT says for us to manage it ourselves.

for anyone wondering why we done use the cloud or a server, we do too. but model setup, licensing, and small jobs are easier and quicker to do locally.

chaosbutters314··on Netflix’s password sharing crackdown is here – it costs $7.99 per month (USA)
people complaining about no good content need to binge kotoro, revival, and sweettooth. netflix still makes some great original content
chaosbutters314··on NYPD urges citizens to buy AirTags to fight surge in car thefts
all the group chats im in use signal
chaosbutters314··on US general warns troops that war with China is possible in two years
2027 is most likely.

desantis unfortunately wins in 2024, america goes full isolationist. as the 2028 election approaches, china will invade to ensure desantis becomes a war president and stays out of it. pushes racist chinese talk and makes sure china takes over taiwan. american then suffers massive tech inflation from lost semis and trade driving US into 2030 recession that will push for a Dem wave in 2032. basically, the whole 2000-2008 period is starting again. sigh

chaosbutters314··on Chess is booming and our servers are struggling
likely due to queens gambit (netflix show) and shotgun king having some influence for both being viral hits
chaosbutters314··on AI chatbots are not a replacement for search engines
why doesnt google just incorporate it into their search results? and then based on what people click, weight it more or less for each type of search? kind of like an ensemble search result
chaosbutters314··on Goodbye, data science
physics-based modeling with some supplemental data science/ML will always be superior. Every data scientist I've worked with has so little domain knowledge anything they do is already useless. They also have little to no presentation skills especially in a business setting.

obviously there are some examples like computer vision that require ML.

chaosbutters314··on Coinbase Hits Record Low as Crypto Contagion Anxiety Intensifies
I've been. opening and closing short positions. I can totally see them going to low 30s
chaosbutters314··on The Myth of the Tech God Is Crumbling
I'm actually leaving my current company because our current PM and CEO aren't big enough assholes. I brought up a problem that can be partially fixed right now with small technical debt that can be rolled back but has a big impact on the customer. One said no and the other doesn't care enough to push the PM. The apathy, lack of aggressiveness and drive annoy me. The CEO also is unwilling to hold 2 unproductive employees accountable for frankly doing little/nothing. I'm sick of feeling like one of the few to care about the product and mission. I love this field too much to deliver poor products and results.
chaosbutters314··on Show HN: I built my own PM tool after trying Trello, Asana, ClickUp, etc.
excel is all you need
chaosbutters314··on What went wrong with Snap, Netflix and Uber?
your text and pics only delete every day if you pay
chaosbutters314··on Xerox PARC – Office Alto Commercial (1979) [video]
this hurts to see being posted after we just had layoffs
chaosbutters314··on Can the American mall survive?
multi level parking, 2-3 story housing built over existing mall, build high rise housing in unnecessary parking areas, put some grass/parks in. not sure why this is complicated.

starts with rezoning

chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: Who are the technically competent CEOs in tech world?
Lisa su is more competent than musk.
chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
regardless of what you buy, I have a 1tb Linux/Ubuntu drive attached to my laptop through USB -c I dual boot into for certain projects. great for gaming/personal on windows and then doing work on the Linux drive. I share files via cloud services if needed and it works seemlessly
chaosbutters314··on Scrum Has Failed the Developers
excel is still the best project management tool I've used. jira is just a mess at this point
chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
xerox PARC is working on this
chaosbutters314··on The Google Pixel 6a highlights the problem with the U.S. phone market
still enjoying my pixel 3a xl.

no stupid punch hole or notch. apple and Google designers must be blind or stupid, can't decide which.

chaosbutters314··on Vietnam to make Apple Watch and MacBook
2 words: national security. as the world's police and adult, we have to be self sufficient in food, tech, defense, resources, etc
chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?
Ithaca NY
chaosbutters314··on Milwaukee Tool Raises the Bar with New USA Factory
seconding as someone interested in your transition.
chaosbutters314··on It’s raining PFAS: rainwater is unsafe to drink even in Antarctica and Tibet
lol, ok. sure, whatever. as a ChemE, we have already made so much progress on making plants blow up less, spilling toxic chemicals into waterways, stopping destroying the ozone, make food safer, ....

you maybe need to go talk to chemists who make this. ChemE just mass produce what the chemist makes. but the chemist just makes what the business needs and the business you makes what the consumer wants.

so oh wait, this is on you for being an irresponsible consumer. don't buy it and we won't make it.

also, north America and the west have already done impressive reforms contrary to Asia which really needs to learn environmentalism

chaosbutters314··on 'Too many employees, but few work': Pichai, Zuckerberg sound the alarm
chrome is still buggy, the search bar moves my plugins a little after loading and I end up favoriting an empty page by clicking the star on the search bar. I think Google engineers are highly overrated for such a simple problem to still exist
chaosbutters314··on Remote workers, how do you stop thinking about work?
because I rather be playing v-rising
chaosbutters314··on Job switchers are earning a lot more than those who stay
not everyone is having a hiring freeze. I've literally had 4 interview requests today from a faang, big pharma, defense and semi.

note, I'm not in software but do it occasionally
