chaosbutters314··on Building your own deep learning computer is 10x cheaper than AWS
We just got around them and argue after the fact. It is a pain no matter what. But we actually do both, interernal custom builds and cloud computing so no matter what we are set
chaosbutters314··on AMD Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core and 2950X 16-Core Review
with 32 cores, I can run 32 small simulations (e.g. CFD, FEA, etc) in parallel for optimization problems or run 1 medium sized simulation. And anything in between.

My ideal workstation likely actually uses ~128 cores but that isn't practical for home use yet. A board with 4 2990wx would be heaven.

chaosbutters314··on A PhD should be about improving society, not chasing academic kudos
this. They don't mention to students, who are too inexperienced, to understand funding and how it works. Professors want the prestige of having tons of students which isn't always in the best interest of the student. The professor's plan can also be "vague" in order to always hold the carrot in front of the horse's mouth. Endlessly chasing something it will never reach.
chaosbutters314··on New York’s success provides road map for others taking aim at pedestrian deaths
I live in a suburb and the biggest problem I see isn't drivers, it is pedestrians. They do not use cross walks. If there is not a cross walk directly outside the shop they are leaving, they just cross the road whenever they feel like it.

Pedestrians also just stand and talk in the middle of street. It blows my mind. I have lived around the US and this is a distinctly NY thing.

And they also have the weird habit of doing their run...in the middle of the road. Even if there is an empty sidewalk with no crossings, people will just do their run in the road like they're a car.

Drivers are also to blame but there would be even fewer if pedestrians were held to some standards of road safety. Police don't even need to give tickets, just scare pedestrians into using common courtesy.

chaosbutters314··on MoviePass couldn’t afford to pay for movie tickets on Thursday
With moviepass, I got once a week plus get a large popcorn discounted because of all the points I get from free movies and buying a popcorn.

Movies in my area are $13 so even going to 1, I win

chaosbutters314··on 1500 Archers on a 28.8: Network Programming in Age of Empires and Beyond (2001)
For anyone complaining about aoe2 lag, it is mainly just the version on steam.

if you apply the compatibility patch, you can load your steam copy onto voobly for free and play with next to no lag. The difference is night and day plus better features with Voobly.

chaosbutters314··on 1500 Archers on a 28.8: Network Programming in Age of Empires and Beyond (2001)
the unreliable gameplay is mainly on steam. if you go play aoe2 on voobly, the lag basically disappears and feels smooth as butter.

If you own the hd version, there is a patch to freely convert it to voobly.

chaosbutters314··on 1500 Archers on a 28.8: Network Programming in Age of Empires and Beyond (2001)
if you play it on voobly versus steam, there is almost no lag and plays super smooth
chaosbutters314··on Intel’s High-End Cascade Lake CPUs to Support 3.84 TB of Memory per Socket
the 16 physical core TR is glorious so I'm sure you'll enjoy the 32 core even more!

I'm going to wait 1-2 years to upgrade since I just got the 1st gen.

chaosbutters314··on Boiling, steaming or rinsing? Physics of the Chinese cuisine
thanks! Didn't think arXiv had that type of category
chaosbutters314··on Boiling, steaming or rinsing? Physics of the Chinese cuisine
One of these again? These are very low-quality papers compared to the food engineering journal papers you'll find that discuss more detail and even provide better overview.

This is almost a very pop-sci geared at undergrads.

Are these meant to be published because I'm curious what journals would accept them?

chaosbutters314··on The physics of baking good pizza
1)how to optimize volumetric versus surface heating versus air/water heating of food. Once you understand enough about heat transfer, combining microwave, broilers, hot air and sous vide type cooking let's you create food textures that are better suited for your personal likes. Like cooking a turkey, people that complain about it being dry don't understand the difference between heat transfer and mass transfer.you don't have to dry out meat when heating it.

2) this is for food science, not food engineering. But yes, my this is a new area food companies (and specifically my boss) is getting into is to use AI/ML for understanding process and recipes to design new foods or troubleshoot problems

chaosbutters314··on The physics of baking good pizza
oh god, I don't think the only thing close is Alton Brown's good eats. It is the closest thing to food science classes you'll get that are general and simple to understand
chaosbutters314··on The physics of baking good pizza
This paper is so oversimplified.

If you're actually curious in the physics of food, check out the journal of food engineering. We use much more complex physical models to simulate the physics of food.

Fun note, this is my job and it is pretty cool to really dig into the science behind cooking and then apply that to an industrial scale.

chaosbutters314··on Marijuana addiction is real, and rising
Sour patch kids are wayyyy more addictive than cheeseburgers and coffee. When you grab 4-5 of them and put them on your gum and suck down their sour goodness before getting that enjoyable gummy chew, it is heaven. I'd eat them till gums bled from all the acid.
chaosbutters314··on We Timed Every Game. World Cup Stoppage Time Is Wildly Inaccurate
It does feel dead. Like hurry up with the kick and quit standing around unless you're going to DD stoppage time.
chaosbutters314··on Intel demonstrates a 28-core processor running at 5GHz
The 1950x is 16 cores and 32 threads
chaosbutters314··on Renting is Throwing Money Away, Right? (2015)
I get to live closely with a bunch of cool people and not isolated in some house in a suburb. I think renting has a nice social benefit.

Plus, the mobility aspect to just pick up and leave gives me a ton of reassurance.

There is also the bonus that someone else has to fix the appliances and do maintanance than me.

chaosbutters314··on Lessons on product and marketing from the growth of Domino’s Pizza
What they could really use is cartoon pizza. Like a poke-pizza (pepperoni and olives in the shape of a poke ball)
chaosbutters314··on Why Can't Hollywood Make a Good Video Game Movie?
They're always missing the superior siege weapon in superior games. GoT uses them and you see how well that does
chaosbutters314··on The Subway Is So Late, It’s Making New Yorkers Early
NYC needs to be like the tube in London. When I'm at a platform, I expect to see the exact route of the train. No guesswork. The NYC system needs more redundant labeling. Don't assume tourists will see the 1st or 2nd sign. Just keep posting them clearly with too much detail
chaosbutters314··on The Subway Is So Late, It’s Making New Yorkers Early
lol, I can drive from bear mountain to downtown manhattan in 60-90 minutes. Usually that involves finding a carefully chosen parking garage and walking fast, but still quick and painless
chaosbutters314··on Americans are spending less on clothing
Maybe I'm too poor to update my clothes since Im paying all those student loans and ridiculous rents?
chaosbutters314··on Living in a parking lot in Santa Barbara
So pretty much every scientist at my (US) company is poor? Even uppermanagement in r&d. None of us see 30 days off per year. At most of is 25 after 2 decades.

I'd say 15 days instead of 30 seems fair number for America and probably 30 for europe

chaosbutters314··on Ketamine lifts rodents' mood only if administered by male researchers
You're an ass. Comments like this make me hate people. Why does it even matter what their sexuality is? And why does that group of people need a special name
chaosbutters314··on Airline revenue from extra fees increases
Same thing happened to me. I luckily checked the night before. I was as furious as I'm sure you were.
chaosbutters314··on Does the world need polymaths?
I know a lot of companies in the engineering/science world that hire PhDs who are experts in very specific fields and others who have broad knowledge in a lot of fields. They try to balance these 2 types of people: broad versus specific and have them work together for synergy.
chaosbutters314··on 83 percent of Bay Area renters plan to leave, says survey
What is wrong with westchester? It doesn't smell as bad, you can get a place for the same price as nyc with 4x the space and you're only a 1 hr drive away if you don't try to go during rush hours.

A big problem I see with going to westchester to nyc is the parking costs in nyc. Like $50/day is wayyyyyyyy too high to be sustainable. And the trains are just too slow, it is faster to drive from where I am in westchester than take the train.

chaosbutters314··on Ask HN: What tech that's right around the corner are you most excited about?
Affordable triple digit core desktop computers. The cloud is fine but until I'm getting Google fiber in every city, this'll need to suffice. The application is HTC applications in industry design
chaosbutters314··on A Guide to Intermittent Fasting
I do the 40/8 since when I do 16/8 I still end up eating ~3000+ calories too often. My inner fatty is too strong and I found this is a good way to compromise/deal with it.
