chambo622··on Google Inbox
Did you have to turn this on in the Google Apps control panel? I'm unable to get it to work (Google Apps free edition, grandfathered).
chambo622··on New Wearable Can Call and Text Without a Phone
Will.i.am is an interesting guy. This looks much more refined than the weird iPhone camera accessories he launched a year or two ago.

I still believe that smartwatch ecosystems outside of Android Wear and Apple's Watch are unlikely to thrive.

chambo622··on Nexus Player
I thought all of the original Android TV devices got updated to the second major version of the platform based on Android 4.2.
chambo622··on Wit.ai (YC W14) raises $3M seed round from Andreessen Horowitz
Wow, congrats on the round! Looks like an amazing service. Will be trying it soon for a project I'm working on, Android speech APIs aren't quite cutting it.

Can this be run continuously from a Service on Android? Didn't see a mention of it in your docs, but I've yet to play with it.

chambo622··on Square Raises $150M at a $6B Valuation
I prefer it a lot more. Maybe it's just my circle of friends, but we laugh at how stupid Venmo's Facebook spam is and generally prefer how easy Square Cash is to use. Since the money ends up right back on your debit card, it's a lot easier than maintaining a Venmo balance and having to deal with that.

I signed up for Venmo a while back to try their API at a hackathon. They then decided to freeze my account and send me a barrage of questioning. I didn't bother.

chambo622··on Square Raises $150M at a $6B Valuation
I get the feeling that what Square is doing now is just a glimpse of their greater plan. They have a proven ability to execute and release polished products that are enjoyable to use.

Nearly everyone I every need to pay is on Square Cash (and those who aren't soon are, the barrier to signup is very low) and the app is just a pleasure to use compared to the competition. It's second nature at this point.

chambo622··on Lecture 1 – How to Start a Startup [video]
Small thing - the Pinterest story involved the Palo Alto Apple Store, not the public library, if I recall correctly.

Good notes. A few typos.

chambo622··on Ask HN: What do you use to buy and sell stocks?
Vanguard. Website works well enough. Rarely find a need to use the Android app - I use Mint primarily to keep an eye on my accounts, and Google Now for timely updates of certain stocks/funds.
chambo622··on My Experience at YC Hacks
PennApps, LAHacks, HackTech, HackSC...all had expos. You're right in that demos for everyone just aren't feasible. But I think you understate the challenges and downsides associated with expos.

The hackathon explosion is just getting started, I'm sure things will continue to improve as these events mature.

chambo622··on My Experience at YC Hacks
I've been to a dozen large hackathons and they essentially all operate in this manner. I've been trying to come up with another way - the expo style has many shortcomings including those you listed. It's very hard to stand out in this format especially if your demo is not conducive to 10 seconds standing up at a table with 100db ambient volume. Makes the importance of designing a hackathon-friendly hack paramount.

QCast brings shared party playlists to your Chromecast. When you host a party, everyone can add songs to the shared queue, and downvote those they don't like - if a majority is reached, the song is automatically skipped. The host maintains the option to swipe songs away to remove them, skip to the next track, and control volume.

QCast works on all Android devices 4.0.3 and later along with a Chromecast. The host needs a Google Play Music All Access subscription. Would love to hear what you think. Next time you have people over, give it a try!

chambo622··on Mirror Your Android Screen to the TV with Chromecast
Android has had Miracast support (with display mirroring) for a while now...just nobody used it. Chromecast is/has the potential to be a much more widely used and supported protocol.
chambo622··on Chrome Remote Desktop for Linux
Awesome to have this, will definitely set this up on my desktop.

Kind of crazy that this got released and we still don't have a Google Drive client for Linux.

chambo622··on Google I/O 2014 schedule
Well, a year ago the GDK wasn't even out yet so I'm not sure I'd say that.

But since XE16 Glass has taken a step backwards both in daily usability, and from a dev perspective (no more static cards from GDK apps? Touchpad no longer scrolls ListViews? and so on...)

chambo622··on Google Music natively on Linux
Great post. I may check this out, although I usually need more flexibility than just playing radio.

It is pretty sad to me that in 2014, my Sandy Bridge Core i7 machine with 16GB RAM occasionally stutters while playing Google Music in Chrome.

chambo622··on Ask HN: Any Hacker News Android apps with intent filter to open HN urls?
I follow Twitter and Facebook accounts that usually link to a story posted on HN as well as the link to the discussion page on news.ycombinator.com. Ideally I want to be able to open that directly in the app.

The HN site is unfortunately not readable on mobile devices.
