chalst··on Python 3.13 Gets a JIT
Good idea! It can be done fairly easily by people who are good with changelogs.

FWIW, the most recent changelog is at https://docs.python.org/3.13/whatsnew/3.13.html

chalst··on Python 3.13 Gets a JIT
5.5% compounded over 5 years is a bit over 30%: not a huge amount but an easily noticeable speed-up. What were you thinking of when you typed “significantly faster”?
chalst··on True Name – Mastercard (2022)
Not being able to call your card issuer is a reason to change issuer. I would put 30+ minutes wait time in this category, although I know someone who is a seasoned hand when it comes to getting through tasks during phone waiting times.

It would be nice if card issuers avoided deadnaming, but there could be an innocent explanation for why a card was issued with the wrong name.

chalst··on True Name – Mastercard (2022)
That’s an issue that can be dealt with by calling the card issuer.
chalst··on Show HN: I made an app that consolidated 18 apps (doc, sheet, form, site, chat…)
Congratulations on the launch of your app!

Have you thought about what sort of developers would develop modules? Have you made any efforts to engage the free software community?

chalst··on In-browser code playgrounds
> There is also Kohei Tokunaga's container2wasm initiative8, which converts arbitrary Docker images into WASI binaries. It looks promising, but it generates 100+ MB binaries for even the smallest Alpine-based images.

NixOS produces smaller containers, from around 10mb.

The browser extension is for Chrome. Is support for Firefox planned?
chalst··on What is RISC-V, and why we're unlocking its potential
It still has an Arm license, but the outcome of the lawsuit against Qualcomm last year was that Qualcomm could not use the Nuvia design, which used Arm technology, on the idea that Qualcomm did not get the same rights as Nuvia had to use Arm’s designs from their takeover of Nuvia.
chalst··on What is RISC-V, and why we're unlocking its potential
This is a direct consequence of the lawsuit by Arm that prevented Qualcomm from using the Nuvia design in its hardware.

chalst··on Let maintainers be maintainers
Also titled “Curse of the CEMBI”, where the acronym is for ‘Corporate-Employed Maintainers with Bad Incentives’.
chalst··on Lima: A nice way to run Linux VMs on Mac
My understanding is that Colima is based on such a front-end, but Lima is not.
chalst··on What if you get things done? (The Imperfectionist)
tl;dr summary:

The essay is aimed at people who feel (in a deep way) that they aren't deserving, a debt of sorts that can be reduced but no amount of productivity can ever eliminate.

chalst··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
This is how it works in a reasonably competitive economy. The economy is not competitive for the EU markets that matter and this means time beyond what you call short term doesn't see many new entrants.

Unless by long term you mean waiting until the EU has a competitive economy. That's not what most economists do.

chalst··on Harvard dishonesty expert accused of dishonesty
He has returned to the topic, this time with a focus on those who are capable of exposing the fraud but instead turn a blind eye. He calls this 'passive corruption'.

Andrew Gelman has written about this case, drawing parallels with past cases and asking about the psychology of the fraudsters.

I recall encountering a simple domain-specific PL in school in the late 1980s that allowed physical systems to be easily modelled.
chalst··on Micro.blog Reclaiming Usernames Policy
> Do people ever go on Twitter to view tweets that are more than 2 days old?

I do, fairly frequently.

chalst··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
> If people love native so much, why do sites like Reddit and LinkedIn heavily push mobile web users to the app?

Because that's how sites can avoid the privacy features that are inherent to browsers.

What proportion of visitors to the LinkedIn site use the app? I'm guessing it's pretty small.

chalst··on Methane may not warm the Earth quite as much as previously thought
> Methane degrades to C02 in 1-1 proportion

Source? I understood that the long-term radiative forcing of methane was lower than CO2, which is incompatible with this claim.

chalst··on For the first time, the Fed is losing money
You claim without argument that Blair Fix gets the direction of the causality wrong. In fact he talks about both directions and argues for his interpretation.

You've failed to identify a fallacy.

chalst··on For the first time, the Fed is losing money
Some like them, more hate them.
chalst··on You can't tell people anything (2004)
I had the luxury of going to Oxford, when colleges gave tutorials to two or three students at a time. For most topics, I figured out what had been covered in the lectures from the tutorial problems, read up that material in the book I was using, and then solved the tutorial problems.

There were a few topics that I attended the lectures, either because the lecturer was very good or because no book was adequate. The subject was mathematics, but I knew people from other fields who approached study in a similar way.

The users of the plugin if it's at all successful will include SEO types. Without a way of sorting out quality input from generic promotional input, this plugin will not scale.

chalst··on The end of Type 1 fonts
The default is to mostly embed, except for a number of standard fonts.

You can list the embedded fonts using standard tools. The pdffonts binary is pretty universal, as part of the Poppler set of tools.
