chadwickthebold··on Wealth does not make you smarter
If any rich people would like to get closer in touch with the rest of humanity, I would like to offer my services by taking one half (50%) of your money. You will then be less rich and more happy and I will be less poor and more happy.
chadwickthebold··on Screw your standing desk. How about squatting?
Going out on a limb here - I think this is satire.
chadwickthebold··on Eterni.me - Become Virtually Immortal
I think their marketing pitch may be reflective of a lack of understanding of human interaction on the part of the founding team. 5 engineers, a business exec, and two HR people - but no psychologists or social scientists.

Too much what, not enough why IMO.

chadwickthebold··on Eterni.me - Become Virtually Immortal
It gets really scary when you imagine that the path to monetization for this thing might be advertising. Great, I can remember that fishing trip I took with grandpa, but he'll be subtlety shilling for some online retailer at the same time.
chadwickthebold··on The Two Teenagers Who Run the Popular Twitter Feed @HistoryInPics
"free publicity"

Exposure doesn't put food on the table.

chadwickthebold··on Eterni.me - Become Virtually Immortal
In the end, you are still dead. Living people interacting with a digital mishmash of your digital leavings seems both disingenuous and kind of creepy.
chadwickthebold··on How not to write a job post
In the US, a pension is traditionally considered a scheme by which you receive a lifetime stipend from a company upon retirement after working for a set number of years. A 401k is a contributory 'pension', but the word 'pension' just has a different social connotation in the US.
chadwickthebold··on Uber rival accuses car service of dirty tactics
At least he didn't call it growth hacking.
chadwickthebold··on A philosophy of movie recommendations
I assume there's some technical reason recommendations from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu aren't shown here? Is this localized for the UK or something?
chadwickthebold··on Linux Distributions that deserve more Love
Yeah, Arch is a great distro for some specific use cases. I loved it when I was in college and had 3+ hours every other week to get my packages un-borked after some update, but nowadays I just don't have the time... Great distro for bleeding edge stuff, though!
chadwickthebold··on Female Founders
Aren't upvotes a measure of interest? I would argue that the lack of upvotes on sexism-related posts indicates a lack of interest in discussing these issues on the part of the general population of HN.

What you get is a small group of vocal people eager to discuss the topic while everyone else simply avoids the post. This is similar behavior to what is seen in a flamewar, but could we agree that there might possibly be a better way to rank posts that is able to differentiate between an important discussion that not many people want to have, versus a petty internet argument?

chadwickthebold··on Has Microsoft Gone Nuts?
If you need the "clamshell laptop unit" around to make this work, doesn't it just make more sense to carry an actual laptop? Motorola did this with the Atrix I believe, and that was piece of garbage.
chadwickthebold··on In A Divided San Francisco, Private Tech Buses Drive Tension
"You can blame me if you want, but I don't think I'm really the cause of the problem."

You can draw a lot of comparisons between the economic/class struggle in SF and the NSA scandal. Techies and engineers 'just doing their job', insulated from and making excuses for the larger system. Not really a direct comparison, but an interesting one to think about.

chadwickthebold··on What It's Like to Live on Low Pay in a Land of Plenty
How about a wage that was at least a decent amount above the federal poverty level?
chadwickthebold··on Why we removed bosses at Treehouse
When Valve gets invoked like this, it's not always a positive thing. There was a good post about Valve's flat management structure about half a year ago [1], which raised several interesting points. Seriously, check out that post, and read up on 'The Tyranny of Structurelessness'.

chadwickthebold··on Why you should use OpenGL and not DirectX
I'd be willing to bet serious money that if Valve released HL Ep.3 with the Steam Box next holiday season, they could upgrade their mattress stuffing from $20s to $100s. Even if they released Windows and Linux versions simultaneously, they would absolutely kill it.
chadwickthebold··on Yahoo acquires Ptch
Does anyone have any idea how this fits into Yahoo's overall strategy?
chadwickthebold··on DHS stalls no-fly list trial by putting witness on no-fly list
'Other airlines receiving similar instructions have acquiesced to DHS orders to keep the instructions from the DHS, and the reasons for the airlines’ actions, secret from the would-be travelers whose rights are affected. '

It's pretty scary that this is such a common occurrence with government orders.

chadwickthebold··on UPS Also Said To Be Testing Drone Delivery
I think the Doge meme at the top perfectly summarizes the discussion and usefulness of 'Amazon Prime Air'.
chadwickthebold··on Tab Closed; Didn't Read
I love sites that do this. Why anyone would block access to their own content is beyond me.
chadwickthebold··on Google Wallet Card
Huh. Could someone point out how this is different from Coin? On first flush it seems like it will have an easier roll out time, but I can see how privacy conscious people will be wary of it.

Edit- and I mean different from Coin in a use case kind of way. I realize that Coin does stuff with the magnetic strip directly whereas this is just another card that is linked on the net to all of your other cards.

chadwickthebold··on The Period Is Pissed
Does the progress bar on the top of this page, which only shows up when you are 75%+ through the article, bug anybody else?
chadwickthebold··on LG says it will push out firmware update for spy TVs, but no apologies
Love the (metadata) buzzword thrown in. This is complete crap.
chadwickthebold··on That's a fun trick Google
How does using CDNs to load jQuery, font awesome, and some google fonts give away viewer data to third parties? I'm not sure about the tumblr stuff but I don't see how loading these scripts is malicious...
chadwickthebold··on How Apple’s ‘Blacklist’ Manipulates the Press
Further down... "It needs to be said, of course, that comparisons between, say, McCarthyism and Apple’s PR strategy are absurd. I make them here only to illustrate the history and purpose of blacklisting."
chadwickthebold··on Addressing Questions about the Salesforce $1 Million Hackathon
There's no incentive for them to do that. Why would another corp want to go sticking their hands in this massive mess, possibly getting blowback from either Salesforce or the hacking masses?
chadwickthebold··on Why we look at job applicants' Github or 'What's your excuse?'
I think Google's prominent use of them, and their image as the 'trendy' place to work gives them more visibility on this issue.
chadwickthebold··on Why we look at job applicants' Github or 'What's your excuse?'
Woah I blew past that line in the original document. This guy is a jerk. Using language like that is unprofessional, and basically asking for trouble down the line.

Thank goodness due to his hiring practice he'll screen out all the candidates who will be remotely different from him, so he can keep on living in his bigoted bubble!

chadwickthebold··on Why we look at job applicants' Github or 'What's your excuse?'
This blog post really misses the point of the previous discussions about using Github as a recruiting screening tool. It's fine to use it as a small 'plus' factor, but to screen candidates who have no public code portfolio out is silly, counterproductive, and discriminatory.

Also, for a guy who graduated with a degree in Sociology he sure does talk like an asshole.
