.plan wars. Oh the memories!
chadgeidel··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
Happy subscriber to Newsblur here too, I actually prefer it to Google Reader, primarily due to the high-quality iOS app.
chadgeidel··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
I really miss the "Q&A sites" like The Conversatron from the late 90's/early 00's https://www.everything2.com/title/The+Conversatron

Hours of enjoyment from a very simple concept.

EDIT: Oh, who can forget the Purity Test sites! https://everything2.com/title/Purity+Test

chadgeidel··on Apple iPhone X Demand Limited, Wall Street Analysts Say
You had to upgrade to a X when a 8 or a 7 was available - or even a new battery for $80?
chadgeidel··on Apple iPhone X Demand Limited, Wall Street Analysts Say
As long as there have been cellular phones, they have been "fashion accessories". We all joke about the business guy with the giant phone, but that was the "iPhone X" of the 80's.
chadgeidel··on Magic Leap One
When I was at <fairly large financial research website company> they had a prototype VR research project that was shown to a few people. Never seemed to gain any traction, and I didn't hear why.
chadgeidel··on iMac Pro, Apple’s most powerful Mac, will be available to order December 14
Probably because a large percentage of their customers don't actually care about expansion. I don't know - I don't have access to Apple's sales demographics, but I would be hard-pressed to think the reason was "malice".
chadgeidel··on Automakers: Don't Ask Customers What They Want
Bob Lutz is almost the Steve Jobs of the auto world. At least in his own mind. :-)
chadgeidel··on Rip Your Resume in Half and Other Things You Won't Hear from HR
Yeah, I wasn't super clear about my scenario. I have a "all skills" resume and I pare that down for each job.
chadgeidel··on Rip Your Resume in Half and Other Things You Won't Hear from HR
That's essentially what I do. First page is all I expect the interviewer to read. My resume is 2 pages for >10 years of experience.

I agressively delete unrelated skills and promote related skills based on the job description.

chadgeidel··on Rip Your Resume in Half and Other Things You Won't Hear from HR
Some ideas I've had luck with: Have one actionable item per email. State a question in the subject. Expect a clear answer (not quite "yes/no" but something definite). Spend a short time (one or two paragraphs describing the question in detail, but don't make it longer than that.

End the email with the question in the subject asked again.

EDIT: If you find that you need to have a conversation, either walk over to their desk or pick up the phone.

chadgeidel··on The Merge
I'd settle for not remembering a word I type incorrectly on a tiny screen all the time (without a prompt). No "yiu" isn't a word, stop suggesting it.
chadgeidel··on The Merge
I'm not dismissing it. On the contrary, I can't wait for brain-machine interfaces. I can't wait for really good self-driving cars. I'm just not as optimistic as many of my colleagues.
chadgeidel··on The Merge
I believe the merging Sam is referring to here is augmenting human intelligence with non-intelligent (but better) machines. Kurzweil talks about this as well, and was one of the original options in Vinge's "Singularity" (https://edoras.sdsu.edu/~vinge/misc/singularity.html)
chadgeidel··on The Merge
I'd be happy if my phone's autocorrect feature would actually produce sentences with proper spelling and reasonable grammar. Apparently that's still too hard for our mighty machine learning systems. I'm not going to merge with any technology that is worse than my stupid mush brain.

[edit - why am I still editing the spelling and grammar on this post?]

chadgeidel··on The Big Vitamin D Mistake
That line was a lot lower than I imagined! Surprised that Denver is “too far north”.
chadgeidel··on Finance Pros Say You’ll Have to Pry Excel Out of Their Cold, Dead Hands
I don't know your background but "taking an Excel workbook and using that as requirements to drive an implementation" is not speedy. I've done this several times in my career and it's very, very difficult. Not because there is any "idealization", but because the reason the spreadsheet works is because a human is doing half of the work. These spreadsheets are not some "hello world" easy to understand product - they are the result of months/years of effort by a team of individuals which has grown beyond Excel's ability to handle. Translating that into code is not "quick and speedy" even if one is doing a like-for-like implementation.
chadgeidel··on Radio Attack Lets Hackers Steal Cars with Just $20 Worth of Gear
Every single push-button start car I've driven has the ability of "engine off, radio on". On the downside my current car (2012 Mini Cooper S - push-button start) will only play the radio for about 10 minutes (??) after the engine is turned off.
chadgeidel··on Formula 1 e-sports now more exciting than the real thing
Take a look at this video from Kyle.Engineers (a practicing aerodynamic engineer) YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzlp6TxqM5o
chadgeidel··on Ask HN: If you could automate anything, what would you automate?
I'd take this one step further. I love cooking, but not for every meal. Some way of automating the entire calorie delivery process with the correct amount of macro/micronutrients. Similar to Soylent - except tailored for me personally.

I'd still cook a few meals a week and I'd still go out to dinner, but it would be a rare occasion.

chadgeidel··on Comcast Hints at Plan for Paid Fast Lanes
At the very least the regulations in place granting local monopolies should be immediately rolled back. If a municipal entity wants to provide broadband, any lawsuit against that should be dismissed.
chadgeidel··on Facebook Can’t Cope with the World It’s Created
This is so true and something that is confused all the time by “free speech advocates”. It’s quite frustrating actually.

I’m not happy about the amplification of speech that social networks offer, but l’m even more unhappy about the attitude of “smart” techies who shrug their shoulders and say “free speech - cant do anything about that”.

We can do something about that, but that would mean solving hard problems and not creating another way to type a few hundred words into a text box.

chadgeidel··on Reddit CEO Cracks Down on Abusive Content to Protect Users, Attract Advertisers
I don't see why it's not an endorsement. Money changed hands. The content of reddit's many forums is well known. No one is blind to this.

"I didn't give the killer money for a knife, I bought him lunch!"

chadgeidel··on ObjectiveSync – A thin Java object persistence layer for JDBC (2015)
It's fairly easy to do this in Entity Framework. Obviously if you have a giant query it's going to make some "optimizations" that you don't like but if you have a good understanding of your object model and how your database is architected you can usually create nice SQL.
chadgeidel··on The FCC has repealed a 42-year-old rule blocking broadcast media mergers
Even if I use a million sock-puppets to amplify my voice? I generally agree with the idea that one (physical) person's stated opinion shouldn't be squashed, but we are dealing with scale here.
chadgeidel··on Denver Radically Expanded Its Transit, So Why Are More People Driving Cars?
It's about 45-55 minutes door-to-door in my experience. Doesn't really matter if I drive or ride.
chadgeidel··on Denver Radically Expanded Its Transit, So Why Are More People Driving Cars?
I'm 15 miles (24 Km) home to work. I would guess that's a little further than average, but probably not much. That's farther than I would care to ride my bicycle, but the train makes it a quick commute.
chadgeidel··on Denver Radically Expanded Its Transit, So Why Are More People Driving Cars?
No offense, but have you considered a bicycle? Two miles wouldn't get you sweaty and temperatures are generally mild throughout the winter and summer. Obviously July/August aren't good times to ride in the afternoons. You can buy a lot of bicycle for the cost of a year of daily Lyft rides.
chadgeidel··on Denver Radically Expanded Its Transit, So Why Are More People Driving Cars?
Streetsblog has extensively covered the Denver parking issue. https://denver.streetsblog.org/category/parking/
chadgeidel··on Denver Radically Expanded Its Transit, So Why Are More People Driving Cars?
Even reducing the number of free parking spots would help. IMHO free parking isn't actually free: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Akm7ik-H_7U.

The company I work for is building a large new parking structure in my office because people have complained about parking for so long. Do they offer transit options? No. It seems shortsighted.

EDIT: I see you are being downvoted. I assume that's because of your "charge tolls" recommendation. Most folks I talk to think they "pay their fare share" with taxes and roads. They are surprised that road and gas taxes only pay for about half: https://uspirg.org/reports/usp/who-pays-roads
