chadcatlett··on Why GitHub won
Google X/X Development LLC is the Google incubator for possible spin-offs as far as I can tell.
chadcatlett··on Backdoor in upstream xz/liblzma leading to SSH server compromise
The notes section has a brief description of the protocol and the different kinds of sockets involved.
chadcatlett··on Air Jordan Is Finally Deflating
Reebok Pumps had the basketball on the tongue.

Nike experimented with inflation methods on the collar, IIRC using external pumps.

chadcatlett··on Z – Jump around
I used to use z, then z from omz but eventually switched fo zoxide because it also works on PowerShell.
chadcatlett··on Ethernet Is Still Going Strong After 50 Years
RC vehicles, balls with an eye bolt & string w/ a sling shot, and fish tape/poles were key things for the miles and miles of network cable I ran in a previous life.

To add on to the pull string.. if there is a remote chance you have to run a cable the same direction again in the future, try to leave a pull string in place when you pull all the cables initially.

chadcatlett··on iPhones have been exposing MAC addresses despite Apple’s promises otherwise
Older Intel macs stored the SSIDs as UEFI vars, I think even the T2 ones did too but I might be wrong.
chadcatlett··on SUSE Liberty Linux: secure your Linux future without fear of vendor lock-in.
Ahh yes, there was that kind of thing as well. SUSE provided us with ways of replacing all packages on a RHEL running system with SUSE augmented CentOS packages. It was often used by people who wanted a cheaper alternative to RHEL, but still wanted CentOS for their random 3rd party apps.
chadcatlett··on Power companies fight Maine’s proposed non-profit utility
PEC is amazing. We are on San Marcos's service now, but during the nasty winter storm we never lost power with PEC. Where as other friends else where dealt with downed lines for ages.
chadcatlett··on Power companies fight Maine’s proposed non-profit utility
Oncor is one of, I think 5 delivery companies.

Several cities and coops are their own delivery providers as well, PEC delivers most of their electricity if I remember correctly.

chadcatlett··on Contiki – OS for networked, memory-constrained systems
It looks like the non-ng version has the C64 version.

chadcatlett··on DIY out of band management: remote console server
If you deal with ordering lots of Dell servers you can have them customize the BMC security settings(nearly any setting actually). I know of many people who have them either turn the legacy root password back on or use a password they tell Dell.

I insist on a certain boot order from the factory and have the initial pxe boot of the server lock down the idrac. It isn't perfect but it beats having someone pull and scan all those tags.

chadcatlett··on At $249 per day, prison stays leave ex-inmates deep in debt
> The police don't know who that man was, or why he was on property that didn't belong to him. They're not mind readers

Exactly. They're aren't mind readers but they made a decision that he was commiting a crime or about to commit one. They escalated it, not him.

chadcatlett··on The Google Pixel 6a highlights the problem with the U.S. phone market
I don't know why but using Google Maps on my 6 Pro for navigation there is a chance it will complain about overheating then go into a degraded state followed by finally shutting down. It takes quite sometime before it will cooled enough to be turned back on.

It doesn't happen consistently and it seems to only happen when I'm actually driving with the navigation turned on. It's incredibly frustrating when it happens. I've tried different phone placements, even placing it directly in front of an AC vent but it still occasionally happens.

I usually don't charge it while driving but it has happened twice while charging as well.

chadcatlett··on New Arizona law makes it illegal to film within 8 feet of police
All they need to do is claim you are interfering with their law enforcement activity and they can say you can't record your own interaction.
chadcatlett··on Ask HN: Where can we find the unsexy jobs?
A friend runs a small consulting business and he recently took on a customer running NetWare and a bunch of server side software. I'd take .NET/JVM over that.
chadcatlett··on An unexpected Redis sandbox escape affecting Debian-based distros
Arch patches Redis, although not for lua. https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-community/blob/package...
chadcatlett··on The Secret History of ATAPI
To continue the circle of life there is SCSI/ATA translation for tunneling ATA in SCSI.

chadcatlett··on 20 years after 9/11: Will we ever stop taking our shoes off at airports?
Real ID has been implemented in every state and most territories. Not all share their databases with each other, but that isn't a requirement for usage for using the ids for air travel in the US.

After a few big delays, the deadline for having a compliant id for domestic air travel is 2023-05-03.

I personally had a bad experience attempting to get a compliant id when I lived in Arizona. At the time you could select if you wanted a compliant id or a non-compliant id. My wife and I both selected on the form to get compliant driver's license. Unfortunately when the physical licenses came in the mail they had they weren't compliant and had text indicating they weren't valid for federal identification.

We tried to get them to change this and they refused. Friends had experienced the same issue at the time, but I've been told they now have valid ones that you can get more easily.

chadcatlett··on Show HN: Static.wiki – read-only Wikipedia using a 43GB SQLite file
I noticed if you go directly to the page for Nim, it works.

chadcatlett··on QEMU 6.0

chadcatlett··on FairEmail: Open-source, privacy friendly email app for Android
When viewing a message, you can tap on the '...' below the address information and near the buttom of the menu will be a show headers option as well as an option to show the raw message.
chadcatlett··on How bad is your Spotify?
> - actively dislike terrible songs (hide it on mobile, hit the no smoking sign on desktop)

I see this suggestion a lot, but for whatever reason I never see an option on desktop to dislike songs. Unless I'm really blind.

Does it show up near the track controls?

chadcatlett··on Show HN: Noteless - A Markdown-based note-taking app for Android
I've had the same experience with Hacker's Keyboard. Although I now use it from F-Droid, I haven't noticed any easy to spot differences between the Play Store version and the F-Droid version.
chadcatlett··on Ask HN: Did Google turn off IMAP access for good over the weekend?
I don't know about git-send-mail, but mainline mutt has oauth2 support for imap4, pop3, and smtp.

I haven't used it but it looks like it pushes the oauth2 token refresh off to an external script.

chadcatlett··on WD Passport 4TB drives don't support WRITE SAME command
Yes, it's called "REPORT SUPPORTED OPERATION CODES". If you have sg3_utils instead, sg_opcodes can be used to get the list of operations supported.
chadcatlett··on Why Not WireGuard
I hadn't ever encountered the word until the early part of the article.

So I looked up the meaning and went on a long ride on the train of distraction.

At first I honestly thought it was some state actor level prank because of how everyone insisted it was impossible to translate.

Most of the sites being sketchy top5 looking sites really played into my suspicion. Or lots of good beer.

Edit: fixed something.

chadcatlett··on Why Not WireGuard
Totally off topic but this is my favorite article to come across when looking around at various networking related things.

It always sends me down a rabbit hole of watching and listening to recordings of people shouting perkele. I always trying to think of a similar word in US English but never can think of anything.

chadcatlett··on FreeBSD 11.3
Docker for Mac still uses an intermediate VM, it's just mostly transparent to the user and doesn't require you to manually muck around with docker-machine.

You can even connect to the console of the VM if you run into issues.

chadcatlett··on Google to restrict modern ad blocking Chrome extensions to enterprise users
I have no idea if it would compile and is actually complete, but Vivaldi does do sourcecode tarballs.

chadcatlett··on Trivial authentication bypass in libssh leaves servers wide open
For some reason that site doesn't seem to list all possibly reverse dependencies of libssh.

According to the brew uses command the possible dependents are ffmpeg, ffmpeg@2.8, hydra, sshtrix, tmate, wireshark, and yafc. I say possible because some of those can optionally depend upon libssh, but the user has to opt-in to building with libssh support.
