cgb223··on Ask HN: Suing Facebook in small claims?
How do you know?

(I genuinely want to hear this story)

cgb223··on Storage on Vercel
The secret to great customer support from Cloudflare is to drop into their Discord and join the channel of the product / service you're having trouble with

Most of the engineers and product leaders on the teams that make the services check those channels daily and jump into help where they can. There's also a huge community of power users there called Community Champions who help out as well.

cgb223··on Microsoft quietly supported legislation to make it easier to fix devices
How does a governor unilaterally add loopholes to a bill?

Isn’t that the role of the legislative branch?

cgb223··on Google Cloud region currently down due to water intrusion
Lol us-east-1 already went down for a day back in 2017 when an intern accidentally took down the whole DC. We could call him “Godzilla”

Source: my startup (stupidly) hosted our entire infra in us-east-1 at the time. Was a …tough day

cgb223··on 30% of YC companies exposed through SVB can’t make payroll in the next 30 days
Which companies specifically?
cgb223··on The perks workers want also make them more productive
It’s almost like we know what we need to be successful

Most workers just want to do their job well and avoid bullshit and politics

Only a small subset really take advantage of perks in a negative way

cgb223··on Chicago sold rights to 36k parking meters for $1.2B that generate $200M per year
Wow only 6 YEARS of revenue for the total sale price?

How much does it cost to upkeep the network?

Do they expect demand for parking in Chicago to somehow decrease over time…?

If this was a sale of music royalties (a “security” that loses value over time as songs get played less) the multiple for the sales price would still be much higher.

Either the Chicago government is stupid or deliberately lowballing the sale in a brazen act of corruption

cgb223··on U-2 pilot's selfie above China's balloon taken over Missouri
This is the only picture of the balloon fully intact that exists

The reason we sent a U2 Spy plane of all things after it is because it’s about the only plane we have still in service that can fly all the way up to 60,000 ft where the balloon was at the time

cgb223··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
What’s an IDN and what does blocking them help with?
cgb223··on Meta plans to cut thousands of jobs, after CEO predicted no more layoffs
The “debunking” is just that Mark Zuckerberg never claimed that the layoffs would stop
cgb223··on Databricks counts being laid off as “red flag”
Considering hundreds of thousands of tech workers have been laid off, do they just have a hundred thousand red flags in their system?

Seems like a poor heuristic that results in them losing out on talent

cgb223··on Andreessen Horowitz and 'zero interest rate phenomena'
If a16z eventually “collapses” what exactly happens to the billions in equity that the fund currently holds?

Do they fire sell major chunks of companies to whomever buys it or how does that game theory out?

What impact does it have on the companies themselves?

cgb223··on Password protect a static HTML page
Sounds like a golden opportunity for someone with a developer blog to make useful content
cgb223··on NSA wooing thousands of laid-off Big Tech workers for spy agency's hiring spree
Is there such a thing as a “Product Manager” at the NSA?

Not sure how requirements work when your “customer” is intelligence chiefs and requirements relate to gaining access to data in …unconventional ways

cgb223··on Protocol Labs is laying off 21% of staff (89 people)
> The M&A scenario is where you hear about a startup getting acquired for a billion $ and employees are popping corks only to find out that they get nothing (despite all those options/shares) and are now an employee of some other shop that has them on a short list to be axed to realize “synergies” created by the deal.

Can you explain this point a bit more?

If a company was acquired for billions, and they have a contract entitling them to shares of the company, why wouldn’t they have a nice exit?

cgb223··on FCC threatens to disconnect Twilio for illegal robocalls
Interested in this as well.

Been getting spam texts out the wazoo and have felt powerless to do anything about it beyond delete them

cgb223··on Tell HN: GitHub now blocks aliased email addresses
Do you have to set up a new email address for each website you sign up for or do you have software that automatically handles it?

Sounds tedious if it’s the former

cgb223··on Shorting Tether
Has anyone found a reliable platform in the US to legally short / take out PUTs on a crypto currency in the US?

I went looking last year and couldn’t find anyone allowing this feature. Binance had something close but only on their .com site not their American .us site

cgb223··on Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?
To follow up with a more specific question,

Anyone know a good industry news site for Supply Chain related news?

I’ve been trying to understand how the global supply chain works better, the reasons it’s still pretty jacked up, and most importantly, what is currently being done about it

cgb223··on Skilled tech workers snapped up despite downturn
Personal anecdote:

Am a Senior PM laid off from a Big-N tech company who has launched multiple 9 figure revenue generating products.

The market, despite the economy and the time of year isn’t great, but it’s not terrible.

I’ve had lots of first and second interviews and a surprising amount of final rounds given all of the above.

That said most all of those came from recruiters reaching out as opposed to applying directly.

Unlike a month ago, my LinkedIn is EMPTY in terms of recruiter messages.

It’s been over a week since anyone’s reached out but I figure that’s a function of the time of year.

To compare to Spring of this year when I was interviewing (while still employed) I had many, many, more recruiters reaching out than anything I’ve seen in the last 3 months, and the caliber of jobs was higher quality.

It sucks being unemployed during the holidays and not getting the reach I had before. It’s a little scary, but I keep reminding myself that it’s that time of year with holidays, no budget, etc and it’ll get better in January (hopefully).

I’m no 100x rockstar coder, but I’ve added real, quantifiable value at companies where it’s a real challenge to launch anything quickly and successfully. It’s not nearly as rosy a picture as the BBC presents. I hope it gets better soon.

cgb223··on Graph showing level of Covid, flu and RSV in US wastewater systems, by city
Lots of cities missing from this, many exist but lack any data

Not sure how helpful this is when huge swathes of the population aren’t represented here

cgb223··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
I got laid off a few weeks ago

I’m mid senior level in Product Management but come from a big well known tech company, and I work remote from a non-tech “city”. 5 years PM experience, 6 years as a Software dev. Launched 3 products from concept. One has over 20 million MAU, one created 9 figures of revenue for my previous company, and one I have no idea because I got laid off lol

According to my LinkedIn I’ve applied to over 200 roles in the last few weeks and heard back from about 5. Of those interviews, I’ve been rejected from all of them, even smaller shops.

Hearing from recruiters has been much more fruitful, making it to middle and final rounds at surprisingly good companies, but in both final round instances, the role either got defunded due to a hiring freeze or other issues.

In one instance, the recruiter I was working with at a Big N tech company got laid off in the middle of interviews, at which point the company ghosted me, presumably with my application falling through the cracks.

My severance package is much smaller than most, since my company is framing the thousands of layoffs as “performance based” which allowed them to skip the mandatory notice period, and avoid paying out our very generous severance packages. It turns out benefits don’t matter if a company is afraid of a recession.

If anything this whole experience has wiped out my idealistic views of working in tech. I’m a cog in a machine that can be gaslit and disposed of when convenient for people levels above me who have no empathy for my existence

Can any other PMs speak to how their job hunt is going? Hoping it’s not just me

cgb223··on Tell HN: Tired of Hearing about ChatGPT
It would be really funny if this post or it’s replies were written by GPTChat and this whole thing was a test
cgb223··on Want Your Country to Thrive? Give Geniuses a Universal Basic Income
> Children who score [IQ]145 or above would then be offered a life-long genius award.

Sounds like it would create MASSIVE incentives to cheat on the IQ test or pay off the graders to give you a good score as well

It would literally set your kids up for life

cgb223··on Remotely unlock/start/locate any remotely connected Honda/Nissan [resolved]
Am I correct in understanding that Nissan was using vehicle VINs as customer IDs and that’s why this worked?

Or is he saying in addition to customer IDs that the auth API also accepted VINs?

cgb223··on A layoff guide for tweeps
> "Preparing for a Malicious “For-Cause” Termination The new leadership has dramatically changed the expectations of workload across the organization. It is now expected that teams work evenings and weekends to ship products. Work progress is being tracked by the hour in spreadsheets to build precedent for terminating workers “for cause” to avoid paying severance. "

Unfortunately this is happening at a different not-quite-FAANG company in the Bay as we speak

It’s a terrible feeling. Getting gaslit, having everything you do suddenly be under a microscope, finding flaws in any work you do correctly to further document your faults. Even though every other review you’ve had with your manager previously was positive. All to avoid paying out a mildly generous severance package en masse, and the bad press that comes with actual Layoffs…

Companies really show their true colors when times get hard. Benefits mean nothing if they’re taken away at the first sign of hard times

cgb223··on Ask HN: Was anyone working at Apple during Steve Jobs' return in 1997?
> Marketing had products for every conceivable niche. Engineering was all posturing: great hand-waving plans papered over nasty middle-management infighting. Hundreds of engineers in new glass-walled offices, producing plans. I wrote test code against a component that had been delivered months earlier only to find that it was just a stub. Even the debugger had bugs. Everyone knew it was a mess, but went along with it, fatalistically thinking that any OS-level project would be that messy.

This sounds like the company I work for presently
