cf141q5325··on Toyota to triple EV output as it chases Tesla, BYD
Which country are you from that you still have cheaper night rates for power? Or is that something specific to EV charging stations?

Germany had this for a while with storage heaters but it got phased out a decade ago.

cf141q5325··on Toyota to triple EV output as it chases Tesla, BYD
>I really doubt this. Messing with high voltage battery packs will get people killed very fast.

I dont think the safety argument holds much weight. For comparison, there is a lively market in Europe for WW2 relics. People dig up former front lines by night (sometimes even with heavy equipment) and burn out any explosives they can find to sell the "decommissioned" shells to collectors.

cf141q5325··on Google sued for negligence after man died following map directions
I think the mentioning of the pedestrian holds weight.

NYT has a picture of the site https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/21/us/google-maps-lawsuit-co... Its not just the absence of the road but there is a bush/tree growing on it.

If you are unable to see that and the height change from the end of the bridge you are in all likelihood unable to see somebody lying there. Not being able to come to a stop in time would apply to both.

Had he run somebody over the google maps excuse wouldnt fly.

They are in an economic war and are competing about whose spyware people use. I dont see how given that you can take this as a sensible metric.

Not arguing against your main point though, your line of reasoning is just flawed. The US would have reason to behave like this even if Chinese spyware wasnt a threat.

cf141q5325··on Fat Men's Clubs (2016)
Thats entirely depended on the context and assumes some other safeguards exist. Outlawing alone can be utterly horrific, there are quite a few examples of child labor unions (as in working children) fighting such laws. Its no surprise seeing as when there are no social safety nets they are at real direct threat of starvation once they loose their jobs.

This sometimes being seen as an acceptable cost to not have to look at working children gets us into the very much evil category. Its quite gut wrenching how often such distanced simplified signaling results in horrific situations for the people on the ground, even without bad intentions.

cf141q5325··on WGA and the studios reach tentative deal to end writers' strike
There is no need to build it or tell you atm. Once that does change i expect parallel construction.

Once you know what behavior you want from the net, recreating that from non-copyrighted material might turn out to be a lot less difficult.

cf141q5325··on WGA and the studios reach tentative deal to end writers' strike
This is stemming from a conviction about where the difficulty in the creation process is at. That changes with technological advances. Automation often makes practical skills economically worthless.
cf141q5325··on WGA and the studios reach tentative deal to end writers' strike
Given sufficient technological advances some skills might become practically meaningless in the economy. The idea might be where its at. Handloomers also thought they brought something worth while to the table.

Most takeout today is also warmed up according to strict recipe. "Sandwich artists" arent chefs either. And even the initial recipe is designed for mass reproducibility and supply chain feasibility over taste. You still get food but a lot fewer people employed as actual chefs doing chef stuff.

edit: Removed unsensible comparison

cf141q5325··on EU proposes 10-year renewal for glyphosate herbicide
>See how much popularity gets NSDAP reconstruction group, called AfD (in the polls they have 20% and still growing).

You do realize that this kind of nonsense is one of the main reasons they have as much support as they do? By treating people like caricatures you are turning yourself into one as well. Which people react to. Tribalism and signaling isnt going to solve this, its causing it.

One description for the difference between progressives and conservatives is what they are most concerned with. Either fixing perceived injustices or preserving systems perceived as functioning (Or reverting back to such a state). The more dysfunctional and reckless your approaches at fixing stuff becomes, the more the willingness to accept pretty fucked up systems increases in the other half of the population.

Please try to not turn the AFD into the lesser evil through your behavior. The word nazi has some actual meaning. By messing with that you risk not just normalizing actual nazis but also some pretty fucked up politics. Its a really bad idea, especially if its done just for ingroup signaling. The stakes are too high for that.

cf141q5325··on WGA and the studios reach tentative deal to end writers' strike
That is betting LLMs wont get enough non copyrighted training material to be useful. Especially for text thats likely not the case. Pretty sure its a moot point anyway as you have no way to proof what was in the training set and what wasnt.

I very much expect parallel construction if push comes to shove.

cf141q5325··on WGA and the studios reach tentative deal to end writers' strike
> Is AI a tool to make the writers more efficient or is it a tool the studios will use to replace writers.

Increases in efficiencies will still make people redundant. Automation means less people are needed. I dont think even the most optimistic executive thought you could get rid of writers entirely.

cf141q5325··on EU proposes 10-year renewal for glyphosate herbicide

cf141q5325··on Volkswagen cuts jobs as demand for EVs plunges
Thanks for the feedback, thats great to hear.

I was referencing the battery production and lifetime. As well as the reasonable to expect overall lifetime and repair ability. How many decades do you expect to use it?

Given what goes into these batteries and the inability to recycle the components, sustainable is quite questionable. This is a stop gap that only solves a very specific metric, fossil fuels.

There is also an economic incentive to sell more stuff to a limited numbers of customers. Thats visible with most products, its just market forces so i dont expect EV to magically withstand that. We likely need actually more sustainable (as in designed for) but that goes counter to market forces.

edit: To give examples for the general trend, i have two saws from the same maker, the newer one with a difficult to replicate plastic clip holding the sawblade. Defect controller board for mid-bikes would officially mean replacing the motor. Printers and phones dont need to be mentioned. Given fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders you cant expect much else. New models are designed and need to be sold. Thats problematic given the materials used.

cf141q5325··on Integrated Information Theory labelled pseudoscience
Regarding what its good for, it allows you to think about higher complexity problems. For example, you wont be able to create a complete ontological description of reality, but there is still some insight you can gain. Epistemology has value, it gave you the scientific method. Its just that that is a later step that has to stand on its own.
cf141q5325··on Volkswagen cuts jobs as demand for EVs plunges
I am not so sure this is a bad thing. Electric vehicles still seem to be part of the same pattern of planed obsolesce and profitable waste production. Looking at the production and expected lifetime sustainability seems little more then an image from the marketing campaign. Not a surprise but maybe something worth mentioning given the hype.
cf141q5325··on Integrated Information Theory labelled pseudoscience
> we shouldn't take philosophy serious?

We shouldnt treat it as a science. Empiricism is a pointless frame here. That applies standards its not meant for.

cf141q5325··on Texas death row inmate at mercy of supreme court, and junk science
The key term here is confidence. It was bad enough when it turned out that many people who really should understand p-values didnt. But this claiming overwhelming confidence to better manage patients is just despicable, how ever well meant it is. Its incredibly short sighted and ruins trust.

Stuff is just complicated.

cf141q5325··on Texas death row inmate at mercy of supreme court, and junk science
Its worth mentioning here that many methods of execution are quite sadistic. Shooting or hanging with a sufficient drop are quite a lot more humane then for example the chair. I am hard pressed to see that as a honest mistake.

cf141q5325··on Integrated Information Theory labelled pseudoscience
>It can't explain what consciousness is, it can't explain why consciousness ...

You are stating the obvious. Its not a science but philosophy. You looking at is as if it were science explaining reality misses the point. That perspective does not apply here.

You are doing the exact same thing you are concerned about, treating a philosophy like a science. Just that you are worried about it being applied and relied on like as science while at the same time trying to verify or discredit it like a science. Your initial idea of it not being a science was quite right, you just havent applied that insight throughout your model. This includes what standards you apply and how you look at it.

Or to put it differently, Plato didnt loose anything when we figured out that matter wasnt just a combination of fire, water, earth and air. That wasnt the relevant point, it was a reference allowing you to think about something else in a specific way. Trying to look at details of that story from a scientific perspective is not much different from trying to build a physical model of the solar system from the bible.

Its just not a sensible thing to do. It corrupts your reality model and lets you do not very sensible things based on not very sensible convictions and judgements.

cf141q5325··on Show HN: A “CRM” for personal relationships
Firefox 117 with adblock and noscript (nothing allowed).

Again, this is much preferable over the site not loading. I am not that familiar with web development but it looks like something that isnt initialized correctly (likely set afterwards in js?). Its really not worth putting in the effort to try to debug it if its not obvious.

Its pretty clear that its a side effect of the blockers so you shouldnt be worried about bad impressions. I took it as a very good sign that the page just loaded as is anyway, especially given that you are working with quite sensitive information. Anyone with a similar setup will likely take it the same way as they are used to sites not working.

This way i was able to look at it, which i wouldnt have if the site required any additional scripts. That should count as a win and a job well done.

cf141q5325··on Show HN: A “CRM” for personal relationships
Opening the page the first time it starts at the bottom and i need to scroll up. Opening it a second time it works fine (starts at the top). Behavior replicated with new private window.

This isnt an issue worth fixing, just wanted to mention it in case its directly apparent what isnt correctly initialized. I (and i think most others) prefer this over the site not working without javascript. Requiring to unblock a random site is a lot higher hurdle for accessibility then just scrolling up. In all honesty a non issue.

cf141q5325··on Project Gutenberg has implemented one of the worst AI fears of striking actors
That problem is as old as automation itself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-loom_riots

It should not be overlooked that this is less of a problem of automation but one of how we organize society. What do we do once large parts of society become redundant? With many of them already having had bullshit jobs doing busywork? The effect of substantial numbers of high paying jobs vanishing alone will be disastrous for the economy. Technological progress is just highly deflationary.

cf141q5325··on Project Gutenberg has implemented one of the worst AI fears of striking actors
Yes. Unfortunately none of this is easy. Even if you are sure you are not in a deteriorating cult (pleasant one or not) there is still a ton of blind spots not stemming from social environment but your ego for the lack of a better term. Cognitive biases are a real danger and both advertisement and cognitive warfare target those.

This is very much an asymmetric struggle. While you might be a sensible person when you are paying attention to the right aspects, most of the time you arent. Or to quote the Provisional IRA of all people

>Today we were unlucky, but remember we only have to be lucky once. You will have to be lucky always.

I dont see a way around regularly checking if you have gotten unlucky and carried away. Its really easy to just be opposed to a caricature, figuring out and accepting that you have become one as well as a reaction is quite a lot harder. Mitchell and Webb made a great bit about checking regularly if you and your friends are maybe the baddies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToKcmnrE5oY

If people around you take offense to you doing that, thats a very valuable indicator. If this leaves you with a collapsed reality model, dont worry, thats normal. Stuff is just complicated. Fortunately less bad is often a very reachable bar.

cf141q5325··on Project Gutenberg has implemented one of the worst AI fears of striking actors
>it almost seems to be trying to hurt the cause of the actors currently on strike.

Thats a lot less strange then it sounds. Sabotage is a real strategy and it has become incredibly easy with increasing tribalism and the inability to call peoples stupidity out. The rational goes the more i can make your side look and act stupid, the better chances for my side. It becomes increasingly easy if there arent any checks and balances in your ingroup. It of course leaves everyone in a worse situation but a lot of people dont seem to care.

Just realized we are having the same conversation twice. My bad. Pls see the other post, you cant actually nuke segments of the GDP, your examples function as economic drivers.
cf141q5325··on Spyware can infect your phone or computer via the ads you see online – report
We can ban that on paper and pretend that the problem went away. We cant actually nuke large parts of the GDP.

edit: Saw your nuclear energy edit too late. Thats a great example for protectionism / having a frame for subsidies. We still require energy, that section of the GDP didnt just evaporate.

Car legislation is likewise just a driver for higher consumption.

You would need something equally profitable to do for the sub fleet supply chain to ban it.
