cf1241290841··on Dutch man sabotaged Iranian nuclear program without Dutch government's knowledge
Indeed, the doomsday clock is already requiring higher and higher resolutions. I unfortunately dont see how this changes the dynamic at play.

I think Trudeau put it rather well https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/israel-s-gaza-campaign-puts-...

> Israel's close friends are worried its military campaign in the Gaza Strip is putting at risk the country's long-term safety, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in an interview that aired on Thursday.

No.

Please take this in the nicest way: If thats what you took away from my post you might want to evaluate how much narratives have affected your reasoning skills.

cf1241290841··on Dutch man sabotaged Iranian nuclear program without Dutch government's knowledge
Thats an harder and harder position to defend with ever week the civilian population in Gaza is treated the way it is.

The very sad and pragmatic truth might be that mutually assured destruction might have been able to prevent this.

Its especially bad since thats the way the Soviet Union got its nukes.

ASML have a defacto monopoly. These machines being this complicated is a giant plus for them.

edit: To give an example from another industry, Dave from EEVBlog has a nice teardown for a DLP projector from the upper price segment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3eGqjV9yG0

You can argue that an important design criteria building this was often the pricetag of the end product.

Its worth mentioning that blu ray players and burners work at 150nm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_high-definition_...

There is a paper from 10 years ago where someone used one for making 450nm lithography

cf1241290841··on Keep Leaks Alive
>In five years we've published over 100 million files from nearly 60 countries revealing the inner workings of far right extremist groups, sanctions evaders, weapons manufacturers, tax havens, illegal resource extraction, as well as law enforcement, military, and political groups from all over the world. We need your help to continue this valuable work.

The priorities in that listing are just bizarre. What was the author thinking?

>These situations reveal the true preference toward status over accuracy: People would rather make an effort to preserve their status than to admit having made a mistake.

This is especially bad if it happens internally, with peoples self image.

I used to recommend to people to just get to grip with how big of a moron they are but this lead to all sort of other problems. Framing it as managing expectations about ones competence for specific situations and moments and accounting for cognitive bias in the process seems to be much more palpable. With the inability of just taking the moron advice being a good example for what other difficulties you need to compensate for outside competence alone.

It does sound like an amazing project you did there.

You are also making a very good point with the surprising effort and equipment this can take. I ran into trouble just fixing something on a heatsink the other day. Turns out in addition to drill, drillbit and tapping set i really need something to keep the drill straight :)

Its a complex legacy system still in use that needed to have parts reverse engineered in the past because the documentations no longer existed. This is the next iteration of that problem, there is noone left that understands them.

Its one of the important roles historically accurate reenactment plays in figuring this stuff out. The acoup article also mentions that you can hold a pilum in your shield hand with your thumb for a short time but it being really uncomfortable.

Fully automatic ones do exist, but its generally not done to not risk damage to the books. And without ocr of page numbers you always risked missing pages.

That said, a lot of automation processes in place do destroy the book by cutting the spine and scanning it.

That doesnt seem to be the current IS state when it comes to certain companies. Some dont have a safety culture on company level but one of corruption and economically viable malpractice. Which means the negative effects you describe are already happening.

Once policing fails to stop their trend economic pressure is really the only thing that is left. Especially if policing failed due to said company being able to use economic power to influence the policymakers and the people tasked with enforcing those policies.

As long as people buy stuff from companies with a negative safety culture that have political pull, they dont have an incentive to change. I dont see an alternative to boycotting these dangerous malfunctioning actors.

edit: Or to get to your initial wording, this isnt about how to deal with people making errors or having poor judgement but people acting with intent for economic reasons.

The acoup.blog article mentions that this was likely a side effect. And given how expensive they were to make, that makes sense to me. Especially if the theory about when in a fight they were used is correct.

Its length and the tip being wider then the rest was likely enough to prevent reuse

Slightly related, i can also highly recommend anyone interested in such topics to look at the roman javelin, the Pilum.

Its design is outright genius. The thin long tip would penetrate shields far enough to possibly injure the guy behind it but also get stuck in a way that made the shield unwieldy to the point of uselessness.

cf1241290841··on Is the West talking itself into decline?
Some may argue we are counter steering the west into decline by blindly countering any non-optimistic narrative. It might be a bit more difficult then the old Simpsons meme. https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSimpsons/comments/4miiwe/always_...

Despite what some business/marketing focused individuals might say, just believing something might not overrule physical limitations and its risks. Reality is a harsh mistress and opinion control puts us on a totalitarian path without error correction.

edit: Or differently put, too easy/good to be true is very much a thing in the market economy. Independent of the initial trend being visible or not. Stuff is just not trivial.
