cevn··on Update: Looking Glass Add-On
I'm a big a firefox fanboy as the next guy. But they didn't send it out disabled. I never opted into studies but the plugin was enabled on my browser. If mozilla wants to retain users who value privacy, they need to put their money where their mouth is and not sell them out for ARG $$.

I'm not the only one, and this apology doesn't admit to that. Therefore it's as good as, if not worse than, no apology. Definitely considering switching back to chrome.

cevn··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
> The FCC is required to be split with the Executive Office filling in the gap for the Commissioner. 2 R, 2 D, and 1 whichever party wins the Presidency. (from pythonboi)

2 democrats voted against repealing NN. If we had 3 D's in the FCC, if we had Hillary, you would have seen the opposite result.

Please stop peddling this "there's no difference" narrative. It's clearly untrue in this case. Otherwise, why would the split be on party lines? Republicans voted to repeal NN, not democrats.

cevn··on Japanese startup Ispace raises $90M, targets landing on moon surface by 2020
Totally agreed. We could have an army of terraforming robots establish a space on Mars, for instance, then send humans there when we're sure it's hospitable. Or send drones throughout the galaxy with human embryos to potential habitable planets. An ethics nightmare, to be sure, but interesting to consider the implications nonetheless.
cevn··on A Classic Extension Reborn: Tree Style Tab
Agreed. I gave up on the extension because I couldn't get my userChrome.css to work the way I wanted.
cevn··on Skype Vanishes from App Stores in China, Including Apple’s
Agreed. And the way they try to push it on you in win10 is egregious.
cevn··on [dead]
Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon.
cevn··on Why ProtonMail is more secure than Gmail
When you send an email through ProtonMail to an unencrypted user, you have the option to encrypt the email when sends them a link to a webpage prompting them for the encryption password.
cevn··on Build Sustainably on Google Cloud Platform
> Reduce Compute Emissions to Zero By moving compute from a self managed data center or colocation facility to GCP, the emissions directly associated with your company’s compute and data storage will be zero.

So basically, you are still contributing to emissions, just not directly. Still, it is nice to see this problem addressed by Google. Does anyone know of a similar promise to use renewable resources by AWS?

cevn··on ProtonMail Now Supports Bitcoin Payments
Can I pay for ProtonVPN in coin as well?
cevn··on Kill sticky headers (2013)
It confused me at first too, but now I think I know what he means. Before the header you're linking to - h3 or whatever. Link to some content enough above that header to compensate for the sticky header.
cevn··on Show HN: Spaced Repetition System for iOS
I would use it if it had support for Hindi.
cevn··on GitHub Dark – Switch off the lights
For late night browsing/reading, I use flux's dark room mode, which turns everything into red and black.
cevn··on Google Launches Android Studio 2.0
I don't think so. In order for that to happen, Google would need to support new bytecodes in their JVM (Dalvik? I forget), which would be a backwards-incompatible change. So unfortunately I don't expect to see Java 8 in Android for quite a while.
cevn··on GitLab 8.0 released with new looks and integrated CI
Looks good! One small typo: On the Pricing page https://about.gitlab.com/pricing/, instead of " Next-business day support" it should be "Next business day support".
cevn··on Army National Guard announces data breach
Awesome! You wouldn't remember me (I don't even remember what name I used), but I was in the clan for a while. You taught me how to juggle people after flipping them. Hope you're doing well.
cevn··on Army National Guard announces data breach
Off topic: You wouldn't happen to be Diamons from Diamon✝Sword? I used to play with a guy with the same name maybe 10 years ago in a game called Gunz.
cevn··on AWS CodeCommit
I'm a little confused. Why would I use this instead of Github?
cevn··on Number of legal 18x18 Go positions computed. One more to go
It seems that in chess, the (current) "best" way to figure out whether a move was legal is through retrograde analysis (1). As you can imagine, this becomes very expensive, very fast. Not only that, but the current position may be legal in chess given some previous conditions, but illegal given others (consider Castling). Therefore, given no extra information, you may not be able to tell whether a given chessboard is legal without being given the entire history of the board as well.

Disclaimer: I don't know what I'm talking about, just googled retrograde analysis

cevn··on Dropbox accesses all the files in your PC?
I really, really doubt that the client actually sends the file. But, imagine if they read only metadata and uploaded that.

I agree with what another commented brought up - it's probably just unfortunately overaggressive 'filesystem-watch' code - IE when you change a file it checks to see if it needs to be synced and re-uploaded. It shouldn't be able to affect other files, though. Makes me wish we had more nuanced security controls, like per-app permissions a la Android/IOS.

cevn··on There exists a classical model of the photon after all
"Updating this with modern knowledge of quantised magnetic flux, we show that if you model a flux tube as a phase vortex in an inviscid compressible fluid, then wavepackets sent down this vortex obey Maxwell’s equations to first order; that they can have linear or circular polarisation; and that the correlation measured between the polarisation of two cogenerated wavepackets is exactly the same as is predicted by quantum mechanics and measured in the Bell tests."

How long would I have to study physics to be able to understand everything in this sentence?

cevn··on Has modern Linux lost its way? Some thoughts on Jessie
I have noticed this issue as well and never really thought about it, thought it was user error. So annoying.
cevn··on The New Messenger App from Google
Hangouts integrated with GV! Or at least it did for me, it was a month or two ago. It still has some annoying usability aspects compared to the old GV app but I can at least send and receive texts to my GV number in hangouts.
cevn··on Rust 0.12.0 released
Doesn't seem so - looks like we'll have to install cargo separately if we use homebrew, which is kind of unfortunate. Guess I'll just go back to using the rustup until brew installs cargo as well as rust.
cevn··on Show HN: Dictate Me – Make Computers Notate What You Sing
Forgive my ignorance - is it possible to make this work for chords (ie play a piano and have it transcribe)? Or does that already exist somewhere and I didn't know? Because I would love to have something like that - play piano, and have an application transcribe what you're playing, perhaps automatically detecting key and meter.

What's with the comments on this article..? Bots or sockpuppet accounts?
cevn··on New Heroku Dashboard and Metrics now in Beta
Pretty cool! How do I add a favorite app so that it shows up in favorites? Or is that not functional yet?
cevn··on Patoline: A modern digital typesetting system
I was ready to like this, but I ran into a lot of problems installing camlimages on os x. Anyone else? I'll keep working on it later.
cevn··on Show HN: Smart bookmarks extension
I agree, I didn't figure that out until I read comments either. A little "click here" hint could go a long way here.
cevn··on Cargo, Rust's Package Manager
Hmm, well, rust's brew seems a little outdated (0.10), so if you are intent on using Cargo soon, I would recommend on building rust yourself or grabbing a new binary from their website.
cevn··on Male Scent May Compromise Biomedical Research
In the original article, the effect that the male scent had on the mice was cancelled out by the female scent also being present - not sure of the actual mechanism, but it's not the actual 'scents cancelling out'
