ceocoder··on New Stuff
I agree with you 100% - it is done and Watterson has earned his retirement and then some, it is just the irrational, insatiable part of my psyche - you know the one that wants just one more chocolate covered almond, one more crisp, one more beer - that part wants one more. Just One More - that’s the story of our gluttonous journey through time.
ceocoder··on New Stuff
It is highly unlikely though,

This isn't as hard to understand as people try to make it. By the end of ten years, I'd said pretty much everything I had come there to say. It's always better to leave the party early. If I had rolled along with the strip's popularity and repeated myself for another five, ten, or twenty years, the people now "grieving" for Calvin and Hobbes would be wishing me dead and cursing newspapers for running tedious, ancient strips like mine instead of acquiring fresher, livelier talent. And I'd be agreeing with them. I think some of the reason Calvin and Hobbes still finds an audience today is because I chose not to run the wheels off it. I've never regretted stopping when I did.

That’s from his last interview here https://www.cleveland.com/living/2010/02/bill_watterson_crea...

Edit: not sure if you saw this https://twitter.com/stevesilberman/status/530095596279848960... He made this recently

ceocoder··on New Stuff
Now if Bill Watterson comes out of retirement and starts drawing Calvin and Hobbes again that’d make everyday just a little bit better.

A fan made Hobbes and Bacon https://imgur.com/gallery/tUzAL usually fan art never measures up to the original but this is that exception to the rule. It choked me up a bit to see Hobbes play with Bacon - Calvin’s little daughter.

ceocoder··on Palantir Announces Confidential Submission of Draft S-1
As my financial advisor from firm of WSB likes to say, “J Pow make money printer go brrrrrr”.

Honestly none of this makes any sense, record unemployment, skyrocketing covid cases, people trapped at home shopping groceries online. Yet $TSLA is at 1400, and to quote my advisor “is going to the moooon”.

Sigh.

ceocoder··on Private Jet with US tourists rejected at Italy’s borders
Ah bummer, that explains why I got bunch of odd reactions after I sent venmo request after my last private jet trip :)

Joking aside, do you have first hand experience of this? How does it compare to traveling by business class on a national carrier?

ceocoder··on Hundreds of Botswana elephants dead in mysterious mass die-off
Thank you for writing this comment, last couple of weeks/months haven’t been easy by any stretch. I’m glad I saw your comment before clicking on TFA, it could have very well sent me down a dark spiral.
ceocoder··on Fighter pilot breaks down every button in an F-15 cockpit [video]
That was awesome! Fighter planes are just so so cool as machines, being able to fly an F-22 would be a dream come true.

Col. Themely did a spectacular job explaining all the subsystems and how they worth together. I found this quote by her[0] rather inspiring,

What are you most important daily habits?

My vice wing commander, command chief, and I all subscribe to the “2-10-5-7 philosophy”, which is two hours of alone time, 10 hours of work, five hours of family time, and seven hours of sleep

That must require so much discipline - something to aspire to.

ceocoder··on Ask HN: Should I use SwiftUI or UIKit for a new iOS app in 2020?
Hey Martin, I was looking into this to understand current landscape of iOS development. Found this[0] very detailed post about SwiftUI vs UIKit - HTH. When you do decide, do you mind posting about your decision and rational as well? In addition what made you decide against ReactNative and going fully native?

ceocoder··on Can the Cult of Bang and Olufsen Last? (2011)
B&O was always one of those things that I felt like owning but had no reason (or means) to own, similar to a Leica M{X} camera - it just looks so good, and most pictures I’ve seen taken with Leica look phenomenal, and there is a part of you (or just me I guess) that makes me think that the second I have a Leica M10 with a nice Summicron I’ll become an instantly better photographer.

Thankfully rational part of me knows that my A7III is a very capable camera and I just need to become a better photographer - and Amazon has a good return policy for wine fueled purchases :). I think B&O played on that same psyche - make something that looks cool and make it expensive enough to seem like it is within reach but not quite. Where they fell short/miscalculated was miniaturization of audio gear and potentially proliferation of audio gear review sites like headroom etc.

ceocoder··on What’s New in macOS Big Sur: Human Interface Guidelines
I was perhaps a bit unclear in my post - I use Cinnamon and am thankful to those who made it, however I don't think that or XFCE or MATE or KDE are the "height of desktop experience", they get the job done.

In my opinion height of desktop experience was Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - I still miss workspaces, and TotalSpaces2 is a valiant effort but less likely to work with each new update.

ceocoder··on What’s New in macOS Big Sur: Human Interface Guidelines
> Hacker News is full of people who think XFCE is the height of desktop experience. This is fundamentally different than apple’s core fan base who seem to like any change just for the sake of change.

that statement seems perhaps too harsh to both HN crowd and Apple's core fan base, I spend more time on HN than I care to admit and I can assure you that I do not like XFCE desktop experience at all, my desktop is running Debian 10 with Cinnamon on it, but UX is not something that I'd ever list as one of top 5 features of this setup. Similarly I've been using Apple laptops for about 14 years now and do consider myself a part of "core fan base", for the record I hate the butterfly keyboard, despise touchbar with a passion, and am utterly disgusted by the decision to remove MagSafe chargers.

To quote great Dr Tobias Funke - there are dozens of us.

ceocoder··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
Wonderful! I love that city so much, it feels like home away from home every time I visit. Sláinte!
ceocoder··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
I have little to no experience with London radio, I spend most of time chatting with cabbies when I’m in a black cab. What I miss is seeing pub, pret, pub, pret, pub, pret :)
ceocoder··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
Thank you for making this. I didn't realize how much I miss visiting London. If the creator is reading this - can you please add Dublin as well? If this is on github, happy to send a PR with this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX8bD5tpQWQ
ceocoder··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
oh yeah, those are just beyond irritating. Fortunately, I have very few friends who actually use "Liked", "Loved", "Haha" reactions.
ceocoder··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
Google and Facebook may have a larger user base but it is not the in the same realm, e.g. I use iMessage to talk to my family, my close friends, parents from my daughter's preschool, co-workers, people I've only interacted with professionally - vendors etc - all it takes to connect is a phone number which is universal, and like you say it falls back to SMS. Compare that to Facebook where you have to add someone as a friend - which I don't do often because it just feels odd, or Google where messaging ecosystem is a bit fragmented with Allo, Duo, Hangout, Hangout Chat etc. Signal and WhatsApp are actually viable options but compared to iMessage feel heavy and not native, however I do use them both.

And like you mentioned - spam - I have yet to receive an iMessage spam message. That is pretty amazing.

ceocoder··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
I came across this article[1] and this thread quoted[0] in article some time ago. I don't think of iMessage as a walled garden, it is almost like a low fence you can see across with a sign that "you must be this cool to participate".

iMessage is literally the only reason I have not tried an android phone because I don't want to deal with the fallout of all of my chat threads going back to 2011(?) getting disrupted. I don’t think I can come up with a better example of vendor lock-in.

ceocoder··on OBS (macOS) Virtual Camera
per this - https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/356362

it should be,

  osxvideosink

I wonder if this works,

  gphoto2 --stdout --capture-movie | ffmpeg -i - -vcodec rawvideo -pix_fmt yuv420p -threads 0 -f matroska - | gst-launch-1.0 fdsrc fd=0 ! decodebin ! videoconvert ! videoscale ! osxvideosink
ceocoder··on OBS (macOS) Virtual Camera
I use a USB mic, and so far I or anyone I've been on Google Meet with haven’t noticed any issues.
ceocoder··on OBS (macOS) Virtual Camera
can you try piping that to gstreamer?
ceocoder··on OBS (macOS) Virtual Camera
You should try another microUSB cable - my first microUSB cable did not work because it was charging-only.

This is what I found while I was trying to get GoPro to work with gphoto2[0] - would love to know if you do get it to work somehow.

I wish I can take credit for this, Ben Chapman did all the work, I just happened to google it :)

And yeah, 100% agree on video quality, it is so much better than what you get from that potato sensor on MBP

ceocoder··on OBS (macOS) Virtual Camera
Looks like both gphoto2 and ffmepg are available on homebrew, worth giving it a shot for sure. FWIW - I did end up building my own ffmpeg because debian default didn't have NVIDIA support. Want me to give it a try?
ceocoder··on OBS (macOS) Virtual Camera
If you are a linux user and own a nice camera you can use gphoto2 and ffmpeg to create a virtual camera. I posted howto on HN couple of days ago[0][1], here it is for anyone who might need it. I tried it with both Sony RX100VA and Sony A7III, in both cases it works really well.

edit: forgot to mention that this works over USB, you don't have to pay crazy markup for capture card

edit2: (because I'm so excited about getting this to work) here is a list of supported cameras[2] - sadly I was not able to get GoPro Hero 6 to work.

ceocoder··on But no, 80-column terminals in 2020 isn't “reasonable” any more
Here is Rob Pike on 80 column limit[0], I’ve seen folks having to go through just crude gymnastics to make 80 column check for pep8/flake8 before someone inevitable disabling that chek/or add ignore check for that line. One think I love about gofmt is it does not give a rats behind for how long a line should be.
