cenriqueortiz··on Jim Lovell, Apollo 13 commander, has died
My son and I met him once. He was a very down to Earth, kind person.

RIP. QEPD.

cenriqueortiz··on Hallucinations in code are the least dangerous form of LLM mistakes
Code testing is “human in the loop” for LLM generated code.
cenriqueortiz··on Timeliness without datagrams using QUIC
Nahhh. While most of the applications/cases will be using session-based connections, there are uses for using datagrams directly — don’t be afraid. Yes, you will have to take care of many more details yourself. And as a side line, it is a great way of learning the low level aspects of networking.
cenriqueortiz··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
I was a paid user for many, many years. I helped them when they opened the Austin office, and find folks. I liked Evernote. Like 2 years ago I canceled; bugs and the features/functionality didn't justify the cost when apps like Apple Notes (free) just do the trick well-enough. This remind me that I still have content in Evernote that I need to get out (when I tried the 1st time was kind of a pain to do that).
cenriqueortiz··on When SVG almost got network support for raw sockets
scalable, not static (vector graphics)
cenriqueortiz··on [dead]
The onboard flight software (OFS) has many components, and, the OFS was originally built at Draper/MIT for the Apollo. (Draper also contributed to the Space Shuttle software).

As in Unix, core OS components are used by other software components; in this case, Hal Laning's OS/executive was used by the guidance software (Hamilton's team). No, she didn't write all the guidance code, the team did. No she didn't write the executive/OS, but the guidance software used the executive. All the visibility she got about saving the mission is because the process overruns that caused the infamous alarms occurred during the lunar descent phase of the mission.

In the Twitter thread it reads as if Hal Laning was never recognized. But he was, many times, and received awards and made great contributions. Even the Space Shuttle programming language called Hal/S (which I used during my Shuttle days), was named in Hal Laning's honor.

cenriqueortiz··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
It is already happening.
cenriqueortiz··on Flying Disc Museum
As a freestyler myself => This is a cool website. Thanks for sharing.
cenriqueortiz··on The fragmented nature of modern-day railways
One clear benefit of ensuring disparity of rail systems across adjacent countries is protection from an impromptu invasion. IIRC for some countries during the WWs, that was a main reason for the differences and was in fact effective. I wonder if the rail systems difference helped avoid Russia using the rail system for the invasion of Ukraine.
cenriqueortiz··on Systems Software Research is Irrelevant (2000) [pdf]
I am a big fan of Mr Pike’s work. I would love to see Mr. Pike revisit this whitepaper as of 2021/2022.

cenriqueortiz··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
From MSFT perspective -- good move. From LinkedIn perspective, good move as well -- they have great backing and got a great deal ($). As a user, I'm sad to see this -- the end of LinkedIn as we know it. I've no interest in MSFT holding my personal info online CV presence. Perhaps time to move to someplace else.
