cemregr··on Amit Gupta hasn't found a marrow transplant match; today's your last chance.
The standard HIV test people do (ELISA) tests for the antibodies produced against HIV, not the HIV strain itself.

Donated blood is tested with PCR, which detects the HIV RNA. PCR test detects HIV in as quick as a couple of weeks.

However, because of the added cost (and time cost) of running PCR tests, donated blood samples are pooled before being tested. If the test runs positive, samples are tested individually.

cemregr··on Canadian researcher traces AIDS to single bush hunter from 1921
I thought HIV was the virus and AIDS was the condition, the article repeatedly says "AIDS virus"– am I mistaken?
cemregr··on The Dropbox API
Revisions! Somebody should hack together a "Dropbox Time Machine" this weekend!
cemregr··on YCNYC: A lost opportunity
I think they made themselves visible with their attire.
cemregr··on Does the Google Bot index css hidden divs? yes.
AFAIK GoogleBot runs a minimum amount of Javascript on the page before parsing.
cemregr··on Get a YCNYC invite? Add yourself to this attendee list.
Hint: sender first name is inside the sender's email address, not the name that appears in the email client.
cemregr··on Our Next Chapter at Etsy: A Letter to the Community
Are you implying that Etsy's engineers aren't good?
cemregr··on Fridge is Joining Google+ Team
Another article mentioned frid.ge had 40.000 uniques and 20.000 groups. Does that say something?
cemregr··on Fridge is Joining Google+ Team
I like Austin, but a group I was part of used Fridge and it made my pull my hair.

Thanks to Fridge, I now know how my grandmother feels like using a computer. The UI was really overwhelming and I could never find what I was after or why things were sorted a certain way.

cemregr··on StartupBus 24 hour challenge
StartupBus is soon going to be considered a martial art.
cemregr··on Google+ is Awesome. Facebook Maimed, Twitter Mortally Wounded?
At least at some point you could view the news feed of people in a given friend list in Facebook too.
cemregr··on Pure CSS GUI icons (experimental)
If you're looking for resizable icons that work in non-canvas non-SVG settings, putting those vectors in a webfont is a pretty good idea too.

cemregr··on Loopt Tries a Groupon in Reverse
Haven't seen any Loopt activity on my social networks for a long time now. Are they in the deadpool?
cemregr··on Loren wants to work at Airbnb
I was interested in working for Airbnb too. Last January I tweeted out about how much I love them, and through the tweet I ended up visiting their offices and chatting with Joe, one of their founders. They were very generous with their time.

Took me 10 seconds writing out the tweet, but the face time I got out of it was very valuable. This is another thing one might look into to get the attention of companies.

cemregr··on Office Hours With Paul Graham At TC Disrupt
This exact thing does exist. Different vacation types, different destinations.. All covered. Gave you hotel and airfare prices. Was quite thorough although was a flash app. Don't remember the name of the site though. Adioso.com?
cemregr··on Office Hours With Paul Graham At TC Disrupt
This app exists and is hugely successful. It works in Airports, Office Buildings, Government Buildings, inside the Court House...

called "GRINDR".

cemregr··on Jobs on the importance of saying "no"
Funny that you mention iTunes, it's presumably completely off Steve's radar now. Just try right clicking on a song, see how clunky it is.
cemregr··on Ask HN: Typography—How?
I don't think an alphabetical sort is appropriate in this context, since it wouldn't make sense to consider reading them in that order. I personally would put Bringhurst's book at the very top.
cemregr··on LikeALittle's Ridiculous Hacker House
The story is impressive... And I hope they're on to building something big and serious. Am I getting this right, 5 ACM finalists working on a nicer version of craigslist's missed connections?
cemregr··on Clean Up Your Mess - A Guide to Visual Design for Everybody
It's not a random smudge, it's a meaningful Japanese symbol.
cemregr··on English as a second language: Test results on the most fluent countries
Do you live in Helsinki?

You should maybe change the people you hang out with. I befriended "Finnish rednecks" for a year but that helped me go from 0 to fluent (YKI 5) in 2 years.

cemregr··on English as a second language: Test results on the most fluent countries
As a foreigner who went to high school in Finland for a year, I'd say their English skills weren't that good. They probably do well in standardized tests because their education is geared towards tests and perfect grammar, not actual communication skills.

My friends in high school would attempt to construct perfect sentences in their head before speaking a word, which made them poor conversationalists.

cemregr··on Review my weekend project: Webapp to add CSS to any website and share the result
Andrew Wilkinson's Zappos "Redesign" which almost consisted of just putting gradients and drop shadows all over the page would definitely be easy with this project too!

cemregr··on This is why I sell beer.
Not really. I paid $450 for an early bird badge. $100 flight each way from NYC with American/Continental. Couchsurfing for accommodation. Eating free food at parties.

It's not that expensive if you plan well.

cemregr··on We’re creating a “Startup toolbox”. What apps should go in it?
For web design/mockup work, Fireworks is way more suitable than Photoshop. It's also a lot cheaper.
cemregr··on Isotope - An exquisite jQuery plugin for magical layouts
Dave DeSandro is a web development genius.
cemregr··on HackerBuddy
Great! Could you add Design with different subcategories like information architecture, visual design etc?
cemregr··on New security settings coming to Facebook
I think another intention of this is making it more difficult for people to keep those fake profiles.
cemregr··on Show HN: Fireworks Mobile iPhone Prototyping Suite
Great job! Rich symbols (and their javascript api in general) are underutilized by users of Fireworks, great to see things like this coming out.

Editing the different fields of a rich symbol in FW isn't a very good experience though, in terms of responsiveness. Not sure if Adobe cares enough to fix that.

cemregr··on Hipmunk Surfacing New $6 Million Round
Didn't hipmunk file some silly patents regarding their UI "just in case"?
