ce4··on No other profession trivialises their profession to the degree of software
Shouldn't that be a "cannot solve" in the 3rd paragraph?
ce4··on Analysis of the situation in Russia, claimed to be by an active FSB analyst
I read the parent as a report of what RT used to say in the past and may do so soon again to spin some legitimation for putin's upcoming war actions.
ce4··on GE won’t let me use convection roast on my new oven without connecting to WiFi
What happened to SSL3/TLS1.0/TLS1.1 end-of-life will also happen to Wifi protocols: WEP-only devices are already out, WPA1-only devices will be next to lose access to a properly secured wifi network.

The longevity of the dumb parts in kitchen appliances exceeds that of the smart boxes in them. The manufacturer cannot slap a 20-years maintenance-budget onto the sticker price and I also don't see customers paying for a yearly maintenance subscription for 20 years (for each connected appliance). It will take a decade until people have learned that the shiny new iOT features are a burden in the long run. Maybe iOT maintenance longevity will get sorted out sometimes. Until then I refuse to buy such crap.

ce4··on Ask HN: How do you deal with lies on the internet?
I think the idea is to apply some "mental kalman filter" for all of the more or less unreliable news sources and ending up with a better approximation of what the real situation is. And at least that should be equal or better than any single source alone.
ce4··on On Dumpster Diving (1991) [pdf]
In 2020 i got a 27" mid-2011 iMac with maxed out specs (i7, 16gb, 256gb ssd, 2tb hdd) this way (I was dumping my electronics there when I noticed some guy unloading the iMac).

Of course at home I found out why it was dumped... the left half of the screen's backlight was defunct, turned out to be a torn off connector that I could resolder and it had the infamous radeon gpu issue: flickering, distortions and crashes depending on the chip temperature. Fixed that by rom hacking [1] a dell nvidia quadro MXM-card off ebay for 30€ and replacing the radeon module.

I sold both the broken radeon mxm-module and the working iMac for 35€ and 380€. Succeeding with the repair was very rewarding, it will run for another couple years, I learned a few things along the way and made some buck.

ce4··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
Apparently this is a suggestion for a relevant(?) subreddit, but a bit more context would be nice
ce4··on Elsevier embeds a hash in the PDF metadata that is unique for each download
Or encode the current date or week into the pdf. They could then correlate their log data with the day or week of retrieval
ce4··on In rare cases, coronavirus vaccines may cause Long Covid–like symptoms
I haven't flagged this article, I just wanted to add some reasoning why others might have done so.

There might also be some kind of fatigue wrt. pandemic news.

ce4··on In rare cases, coronavirus vaccines may cause Long Covid–like symptoms
HN thrives on the community and its discussion. And when there's little merit in the discussion threads because most have turned or started toxic it doesn't. So sometimes stuff may be flagged for the overall dynamics of a submission - maybe some sort of anti-"eternal September" reaction of the old user base. Especially certain political topics from 2016 to 2021 had this issue and Covid sometimes as well.
ce4··on Train burglaries in LA
Those are standardized containers standardized which are made in the millions as cheap as possible. That stuff needs to work, think of all the means of transport where it is used (vessels, trains, aircraft), be accessible for inspections (customs) and so on. The costs to secure and upgrade the containers for the whole system is probably a lot higher than accepting a small percentage of stolen parcel.
ce4··on Train burglaries in LA
The thread notes that the area had been cleaned up 30 days ago. So the litter is from very recent and regular activity.
ce4··on Germany doesn't rule out closing Telegram – interior minister
and also: recently I get dragged into "free-thinking" circles, the same mechanism as with crypto and other spam applies. Apparently bots harvest accounts from big public groups, and once you join them the querdenker-spam appears.

It also doesn't help when Telegram doesnt act on laws being broken on their platform as well as being out of reach and effectively evading jurisdiction.

Also: My guess is that moderation is worse for non-english content. Just search via the "users and groups nearby" feature and you'll find drugs, prostitution, racist groups, vaccination certificate "services", covid denial groups and so on. It's a cesspool of shady stuff you won't find that easily on other messengers. Addendum: the 1.5gb-per-file file-sharing feature is also frequently used for piracy. There's PDF bots for serving NYT paywalled content and so on.

ce4··on Forced to sell chipless ink cartridges, Canon tells customers how to bypass DRM
I got a written off office HP LJ 2500 from 2008, around 10yrs ago for 30€. I added a RaspberryPi for wireless zeroconf/Cups printing. It hasn't required any refills/maintenance yet and is autodetected on Win/Mc/Lin/Android.

Super happy with it, I print a lot of postage labels and other stuff with it.

ce4··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
VPNs and cloud services' IP ranges are mostly blocked nowadays (by AS number and so on). You can setup your own wireguard vpn running e.g. on a Raspberry Pi on someones cable Internet, of course.
ce4··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
I wasnt sure either until I looked it up. There's a funny ad on the torrent site in the comic about winning an iPad 3, which was sold in 2012 :-)
ce4··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
Perfectly fits this 10 years old comic classic from Matthew Inman:

ce4··on Ask HN: Google Maps alternative that uses OSM?
It's available for iOS as well.
ce4··on Things I Won't Work With: Dioxygen Difluoride (2010)
Here's most last HN discussions about most of the articles in the "Things I won't work with" series. Note that the content was published at least on three different domains in the last years (science.org, sciencemag.org, corante.com):

ce4··on An mRNA-based anti-tick vaccine
Interesting. That is the second vaccine in 4 months, Pfizer / Valnevas's upcoming (non mRNA) VLA15 was discussed here 4 months ago:

ce4··on Why are German numbers backwards?
I guess it is just an english grammar issue Germans often make (less, lesser, least and so on for single syllable words and x, more x, most x for the rest). The german equivalent of least is also just one word: wenigsten.
ce4··on Pdfsandwich
I am using scantools:

https://kebekus.gitlab.io/scantools/image2pdf/

Also worth a look, works great and also supports PDF/A and jbig for a nice compression of b/w scans

ce4··on Enabling IPv6 support for GitHub Pages
I wouldn't count it like that. Germany's top provider Deutsche Telekom has a market share of around 40% and has enabled IPv6. Vodafone as well.
ce4··on Rogue antibodies involved in almost one-fifth of Covid deaths
In my case it was an undiagnosed long dormant bacterial tick borne infection that periodically became active and became worse the last couple of years. Subsequent treatment resulted in a heavy spike of symptoms i had long forgotten I once had years ago or accepted as the "normal" state. Of almost all of those symptoms I was unaware they might be somehow connected, one of them being Tinnitus in the right ear. There are probably lots of low level infections that cause no to only mild symptoms for years. My first BioNtech/Pfizer shot also triggered it again and some other funny symptoms that lasted for more than three weeks. Second shot will be next week.
ce4··on A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way
There's no definitive accredited lab check as far as I know. At least here in Germany the official serologic tests for late stage Lyme can come back negative for years until the disease really progresses badly - even cerebrospinal fluid results may be normal despite neurological symptoms. My specialist uses elispot lab tests for Borrelia b. OspA, antigen and LFA-1 markers.

Other practitioners use westernblot lab results and differential diagnosis.

ce4··on Why All Printers Suck, Even the Best Ones (2016)
Got a used/written off HP laserjet for 30 bucks ten years ago, still on the same toner cartridge and no issues whatsoever yet. Good investment

ce4··on The Long Road to Linux-Only
I have a similar setup (no vpn, not much bluetooth usage) and am using Debian.
ce4··on Toxoplasmosis – A Global Threat (2014)
https://theoatmeal.com/comics/cats_actually_kill

That TheOatmeal comic always comes to mind.

ce4··on Turn your old, cracked Android phone into a backup server
You could order replacement screens and try to fix it yourself. Depending on the model it's often cheaply available on Aliexpress or ebay.
ce4··on Trials begin on lozenge that rebuilds tooth enamel
My general practitioner who is also an internist was overwhelmed ("deal with it, you're getting older" diagnosed only psychosomatic reasons etc). A friend of mine suggested an MD who specializes in such infections, I later changed to a Doc nearer to where I live. Got the address from Deutsche Borreliose Gesellschaft, a german registry for lyme.
